Abstract

Semantic change has become an increasingly important focus in historical linguistics and sociolinguistics, reflecting how language evolves in response to social, cultural, and technological transformations. This narrative review aimed to synthesize conceptual, empirical, and contextual perspectives on semantic change and to assess the implications of these shifts for broader societal dynamics. Literature was systematically collected from major databases including Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and PubMed, using keywords such as semantic change, sociolinguistics, migration discourse, and linguistic evolution. Inclusion criteria emphasized peer-reviewed studies published in the past five years, complemented by seminal works providing historical context. The results reveal three interrelated themes: conceptual frameworks including semantic gradation and discourse-historical approaches; empirical patterns documented through quantitative analyses of lexical shifts and concreteness in language use; and contextual influences encompassing social policies, cultural traditions, and digital communication. These findings demonstrate that semantic change is not only a linguistic phenomenon but also a reflection of systemic structures, power relations, and cultural identities. The discussion highlights the need for inclusive language policies, culturally responsive education, and interdisciplinary research to mitigate inequalities and preserve linguistic diversity. By linking theory, data, and context, this review contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of semantic change and its relevance for language, society, and identity in a globalized world.

Abstract

Students often struggle to distinguish words that look or sound similar but have different meanings. They also face challenges in using these words appropriately, leading to errors in comprehension and language use. This study aims to assess students' ability to differentiate the meanings of homonyms, homophones, and homographs, as well as to identify their level of accuracy and the difficulties they encounter in understanding and using these words in context. Using a qualitative approach, the research was conducted through comprehension tests, interviews, and observations of students. The findings indicate that while students have a basic understanding of these concepts, they still struggle to interpret meanings based on context, particularly with words that share similar pronunciation or identical spelling but have different meanings. Common errors were most frequently related to homophones, suggesting that students' listening and writing skills influence their ability to distinguish these words accurately. Additionally, confidence played a role in students’ responses, as those with higher confidence tended to provide clearer and more accurate answers. Based on these findings, this study recommends strengthening teaching methods that emphasize contextual understanding, improving listening and writing skills, and fostering a more supportive learning environment to help students better differentiate word meanings.

Abstract

This research investigates the Sandobatu tradition in Compong Village, Sidenreng Rappang Regency, with a specific focus on its significance in preserving Masara culture. Utilizing a qualitative research approach, the study examines the role of traditional leaders in maintaining this cultural heritage and fostering a sense of identity among the community. The findings reveal that while traditional leaders actively promote and uphold the Masara traditions, the younger generation faces challenges in preserving them due to the growing influence of globalization and modern technology. This shift has led to a decline in cultural understanding and engagement among younger members of the community. In response, efforts have been made to educate the youth on the importance of these traditions through cultural discussions and interactive learning activities. Additionally, the study underscores the necessity of documenting and digitizing Masara rituals to ensure their longevity and accessibility for future generations. Preserving these traditions is crucial for maintaining the cultural integrity of the community and strengthening intergenerational connections.

Abstract

This study compares the effectiveness of physical and digital flashcards in English vocabulary mastery at SMP Negeri 1 Baranti. The research employs a quasi-experimental method with a pre-test and post-test design to measure students' vocabulary comprehension improvement after using both types of flashcards. The sample consists of eighth-grade students divided into two groups, each using either physical or digital flashcards as learning media. The results indicate that digital flashcards are more effective in improving post-test scores compared to physical flashcards. However, based on a questionnaire given to students, most preferred physical flashcards due to their visually engaging appearance and better focus during use. On the other hand, digital flashcards provide advantages in accessibility and audio features that aid pronunciation learning. The study concludes that digital flashcards significantly enhance students' vocabulary mastery, yet student preferences still lean toward physical flashcards. The findings provide insights for educators in selecting appropriate learning media that align with students' needs and preferences to optimize English language teaching effectiveness.
