Abstract

Students often struggle to distinguish words that look or sound similar but have different meanings. They also face challenges in using these words appropriately, leading to errors in comprehension and language use. This study aims to assess students' ability to differentiate the meanings of homonyms, homophones, and homographs, as well as to identify their level of accuracy and the difficulties they encounter in understanding and using these words in context. Using a qualitative approach, the research was conducted through comprehension tests, interviews, and observations of students. The findings indicate that while students have a basic understanding of these concepts, they still struggle to interpret meanings based on context, particularly with words that share similar pronunciation or identical spelling but have different meanings. Common errors were most frequently related to homophones, suggesting that students' listening and writing skills influence their ability to distinguish these words accurately. Additionally, confidence played a role in students’ responses, as those with higher confidence tended to provide clearer and more accurate answers. Based on these findings, this study recommends strengthening teaching methods that emphasize contextual understanding, improving listening and writing skills, and fostering a more supportive learning environment to help students better differentiate word meanings.

Abstract

This research investigates the Sandobatu tradition in Compong Village, Sidenreng Rappang Regency, with a specific focus on its significance in preserving Masara culture. Utilizing a qualitative research approach, the study examines the role of traditional leaders in maintaining this cultural heritage and fostering a sense of identity among the community. The findings reveal that while traditional leaders actively promote and uphold the Masara traditions, the younger generation faces challenges in preserving them due to the growing influence of globalization and modern technology. This shift has led to a decline in cultural understanding and engagement among younger members of the community. In response, efforts have been made to educate the youth on the importance of these traditions through cultural discussions and interactive learning activities. Additionally, the study underscores the necessity of documenting and digitizing Masara rituals to ensure their longevity and accessibility for future generations. Preserving these traditions is crucial for maintaining the cultural integrity of the community and strengthening intergenerational connections.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of communicative drilling in improving the English pronunciation skills of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 4 Pancarijang. A pre-experimental research design was employed, involving a single class of 22 students selected through random sampling. The research instruments consisted of a pronunciation test and a questionnaire measuring students' interest in learning pronunciation through communicative drilling. The results revealed a significant improvement in students' pronunciation ability, as indicated by the increase in mean scores from the pre-test (40.94) to the post-test (75.88). Furthermore, the analysis of students’ interest showed a high level of engagement and motivation, with 82.2% of students expressing strong or moderate interest in the learning process. Statistical analysis using a paired samples t-test confirmed that the difference between pre- and post-test scores was significant (p < 0.05). These findings suggest that communicative drilling is an effective and engaging method for enhancing students' English pronunciation. The study highlights the importance of interactive and repetitive pronunciation practice in fostering both skill development and learner motivation.

Abstract

This research aims to enhance students’ speaking skills through the implementation of the Jigsaw Method as a collaborative learning approach. The subjects of the study were students of class VIII.2 at UPT SMPN 4 Panca Rijang, selected through purposive sampling due to their low speaking skill. The study employed a pre-experimental design using a one-group pretest-posttest model. The instruments used were speaking tests and questionnaires. Data were analyzed quantitatively using a paired sample t-test with SPSS 25. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ speaking scores, with the mean increasing from 53.22 in the pretest to 73.65 in the posttest. The t-test revealed a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, indicating a statistically significant difference. Moreover, questionnaire responses showed that most students had positive perceptions of the Jigsaw Method. They felt more confident, active, and engaged in speaking activities through group collaboration. The Jigsaw Method is proven to be effective in improving students’ speaking abilities while fostering peer interaction and responsibility in the learning process. It is recommended as an alternative strategy for teaching speaking skills in junior high school English classes.

Abstract

In an increasingly globalized world, English proficiency is essential for academic and professional success. However, many first-semester English Education students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Sidenreng Rappang remain at a basic proficiency level, which hinders their progression toward intermediate competence as required by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This research addresses the lack of tailored instructional materials that support students’ transition from basic to intermediate proficiency. This study aims to design and develop instructional materials based on a comprehensive needs analysis. Employing a Research and Development (R&D) methodology with the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation), the research engaged 30 first-semester students, three lecturers, and five alumni. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, diagnostic tests, pretests, posttests, and classroom observations. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired sample t-tests, while qualitative data were examined thematically. The findings revealed that students faced significant challenges in speaking fluently, comprehending oral input at natural speed, identifying main ideas in reading, and organizing ideas in writing. The developed instructional materials, which integrated task-based and skill-based approaches aligned with CEFR descriptors, demonstrated effectiveness in bridging these gaps. Posttest results showed significant improvement across all four language skills, confirming the materials’ role in supporting students’ transition toward intermediate proficiency. This research contributes to English language education by providing empirically validated instructional materials that respond to learners’ actual needs. It offers practical implications for lecturers, institutions, and future researchers in designing relevant and level-appropriate English learning resources.

Abstract

This research aims to develop a system that can provide classroom security, design and implement a student facial recognition system in classrooms. The development of a student counting system using IoT-based image classification methods makes it easier for lecturers and teachers to document student numbers. This research uses a campus or school classroom as the case study location. The devices used include a camera or webcam module as a face detection input device, a laptop to process the camera input, validate it against the class database, and perform the identification process (using the image classification library in the OpenCV application), and a laptop that functions as a web server to display the student count dashboard page. Test results show that the system can function properly when the distance between the camera and the student's face is between 30 cm and 170 cm, and cannot count at all at a distance of 180 cm.

Abstract

Semantic change has become an increasingly important focus in historical linguistics and sociolinguistics, reflecting how language evolves in response to social, cultural, and technological transformations. This narrative review aimed to synthesize conceptual, empirical, and contextual perspectives on semantic change and to assess the implications of these shifts for broader societal dynamics. Literature was systematically collected from major databases including Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and PubMed, using keywords such as semantic change, sociolinguistics, migration discourse, and linguistic evolution. Inclusion criteria emphasized peer-reviewed studies published in the past five years, complemented by seminal works providing historical context. The results reveal three interrelated themes: conceptual frameworks including semantic gradation and discourse-historical approaches; empirical patterns documented through quantitative analyses of lexical shifts and concreteness in language use; and contextual influences encompassing social policies, cultural traditions, and digital communication. These findings demonstrate that semantic change is not only a linguistic phenomenon but also a reflection of systemic structures, power relations, and cultural identities. The discussion highlights the need for inclusive language policies, culturally responsive education, and interdisciplinary research to mitigate inequalities and preserve linguistic diversity. By linking theory, data, and context, this review contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of semantic change and its relevance for language, society, and identity in a globalized world.
