Abstract

The research aims to  know the effectiveness of grape seeds in lowering blood sugar levels in white rats. The research began with grape seed extraction using the maceration method. The results of macerate were given to white rats that were given grape seed extract samples at doses of 75 mg/200 grams BW, 125 mg/200 grams BW, and 250 mg/200 grams BW. The positive control was metformin, and the negative control was given distilled water. All were given treatment for 14 days. On days seven and 14, a blood sugar test was carried out to assess the effectiveness of grape seed extract. The results showed that of the five treatment groups, sample group I (extract at a dose of 75 mg/200 gram BW) and sample group III (extract at a dose of 250 mg/200 gram BW) affected reducing blood sugar levels in rats. This is proven by comparing blood sugar levels after being given alloxan on the seventh day in the two groups, showing better results in reducing blood sugar levels than the other groups. It can be concluded that grape seed extract can properly reduce blood sugar levels in white rats with type II diabetes mellitus.

Abstract

Pain is one of the most common health problems, affecting approximately one-third of the global population. Pain management is generally carried out through the administration of analgesic drugs, which are classified into two major groups: opioid and non-opioid analgesics. However, the use of these drugs is associated with adverse side effects and a risk of dependence. One potential alternative is the development of natural-based analgesics, such as mint (Mentha piperita) leaves. To date, there have been no studies evaluating the effectiveness of ethanol extract of mint leaves as a topical analgesic. This study aimed to assess the topical analgesic activity of ethanol extract of mint leaves formulated into a gel dosage form. Analgesic activity was evaluated using a hot plate-induced pain model in male white mice. Gels containing 5%, 10%, and 15% concentrations of the extract were tested and compared with a negative control (gel base) and a positive control (Voltaren® gel). Observations at 30 minutes post-application revealed that the mean latency times of the 10% and 15% extract groups, as well as the positive control group, were significantly different from the negative control group (p-value < 0.05). The difference in the percentage of maximal possible effect (%MPE) between the 10% and 15% extract groups was relatively small, suggesting that the 10% concentration was sufficient to produce an optimal analgesic effect. In conclusion, the 10% ethanol extract of mint leaves in gel form exhibited topical analgesic activity and holds potential for development as a topical analgesic gel formulation.

Abstract

Introduction: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder requiring continuous medical care and patient self-management to prevent complications. Perception of disease and the duration of suffering may influence how patients manage their condition through self-care behaviors. Understanding this relationship is crucial for developing targeted interventions to improve patient outcomes. This study examines the relationship between disease perception and duration of illness with self-care management in patients with diabetes mellitus. Research Methodology: This quantitative analytical study employed a cross-sectional design involving 150 patients diagnosed with diabetes mellitus at a public health center. Data were collected using validated questionnaires assessing disease perception and self-care management, along with patient medical records to determine the duration of the disease. Statistical analysis was performed using Pearson correlation and multiple regression tests to examine the relationship between disease perception, duration of suffering, and self-care management. Result: The study found a significant positive correlation between disease perception and self-care management (r = 0.62, p < 0.01). Additionally, patients with a longer duration of suffering demonstrated better self-care practices (r = 0.45, p < 0.05). Multiple regression analysis revealed that disease perception was a stronger predictor of self-care management than duration of illness (β = 0.58, p < 0.01). Conclusion: A higher perception of the seriousness and controllability of diabetes mellitus positively influences patients' self-care management. Duration of illness also contributes, though to a lesser extent. Health practitioners should enhance patients’ understanding and perception of their disease to improve self-care outcomes.

Abstract

Magnetite (Fe₃O₄) and RTV 48 silicone rubber-based magnetic composites have potential for outdoor applications due to their flexible and tunable magnetic properties. This study investigates the effect of immersion for 14 days in fresh water and seawater on its mechanical, magnetic, and thermal properties. Specimens were made by mixing 70 wt% Fe₃O₄ powder into RTV 48 matrix, then tested for hardness using Shore A durometer, magnetic properties using Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM), and thermal stability using Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). Results showed a decrease in surface hardness due to matrix degradation by water penetration. The magnetic properties continued to exhibit soft magnetic characteristics with low coercivity and remanence. TGA analysis revealed changes in thermal degradation patterns, signaling chemical interactions between the material and the wet environment. These findings suggest that exposure to water can affect the long-term performance of Fe₃O₄-RTV 48 composites, making moisture resistance an important aspect for their outdoor applications.
