Abstract

Baby java orange (Citrus sinensis) is the main ingredient for various products. Pectin as a baby java orange peel substance is extracted using various methods. Microwave-assisted extraction is a method that uses heat energy dissipated by the volume setting from the transmitting medium. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of orange peel powder: acid solution ratio (1:10, 1:15, 1:20 b/v)  and extraction time (5, 10, 20 min) on characteristics of extracted pectin by using MAE (Microwave-Assisted Extraction) at 2.450 MHz. The best result was a 15-minute extraction time and 1:15 as the material: acid solution ratio. The treatment resulted in a 51.3% yield, 10.8% water content, 5% ash content, 775.41 equivalent weight, and 6.49 methoxyl content. The intense FTIR spectrum in the ―CO―CH3 and ―COOH groups showed the same result as the standardised pectin.

Abstract

Donowarih village, located in Malang Regency, East Java, Indonesia, is closed to the Universitas Brawijaya’s Educational Forest (known as UB Forest). The village has various potential local commodities such as orange fruits and batik. During harvesting season, the price of orange fruits declined, and inadequate storage system has led to a rapid deterioration of orange fruits. Furthermore, various problems faced by the community, such as poverty and lack of knowledge/skills, are becoming the major challenges to be tackled. On the other hand, orange fruits and batik are potential to be diversified into high value-added products, which can be done through the introduction of post-harvesting technology and trainings for skills improvement. Furthermore, the Indonesian Government program of one village one product (OVOP) is becoming key drivers to any community engagement program in Indonesia.

Abstract

The Indonesian Government releases the Law 6/2014 on Village. Since then, there are lively discussions about its implementation. In its 7th years of implementation, this paper intends to analyse on how and to what extent the implementation of the Village Law has determined village development in Indonesia. This paper is based on case study approach, which is conducted in seven selected villages in East Java Province. Data is collected by series of interviews with village heads, member of village council, women and youth representatives. This paper presents that there are three main popular sectors of village development in Indonesia namely institutional reform, local economic development and applied technology. On this, the paper argues that applied technology is less problematic than the other two. Institutional reform and local economic development are two sector that many problems (social and political) are identified. This relates to existing social-political structures of traditional Javanese village as well as problem of capacity.

Abstract

An analysis of consumer preferences to find out the characteristics of handicraft paper from betel nut fiber desired is necessary for this innovation. This study aimed to determine the attributes of handicraft paper that are most necessary for consumers. This study was conducted by using Conjoint method. Fifty respondents completed structured questionnaires in some cities in Indonesia. The attribute mix used in this study was physical and organoleptic. The physical attribute mix was tensile strength, grammage, thickness, and stiffness while the organoleptic was color, fiber appearance, and surface texture. There were 16 combinations of stimuli formed with simplification using orthogonal arrays. The result shows consumers like tensile strength of 20-<30 kN/m2, grammage of ≥500 g/m2, thickness of 1,6-3 mm, stiffness of ≥15 mN.m, dark brown color, the appearance of fiber was visible, and had rough surface texture. The results of the correlation analysis showed that there was a strong correlation between the results of preference stimuli and actual responses. The handicraft paper produced had the same characteristics as the consumer preference, except the tensile strength with thevalue ranged from 10-<20 kN/m2. The results also showed that fiber appearance had the highest relative importance value to be prioritized.

Abstract

Cattle and sheep manure, raising environmental concerns. Through the Doktor Mengabdi (DM) initiative, a community service program was conducted at P4S Wisma Kemakmuran, South Sangatta, to implement sustainable waste management practices. Cattle manure was processed via anaerobic digestion to produce biogas and digestate, while sheep manure was composted into organic fertilizer. The program involved socialization, technology installation, field practice, and monitoring, ensuring active community participation. Biogas replaced fossil-based cooking gas, while compost improved soil fertility and livestock feed quality. These efforts reduced methane emissions, promoted renewable energy, and enhanced soil productivity. The program aligns with SDGs 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), 11 (Sustainable Cities and Rural Communities), 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and 13 (Climate Action). Continued collaboration between Universitas Brawijaya and P4S Wisma Kemakmuran promises lasting environmental and economic benefits for the community.
