Abstract

Humans easily exploit the nature because their ethics towards the environment is based on the anthropocentrism perspective. Marine pollution and environmental damage for the sake of individual or certain groups economic satisfaction indicate a lack of human awareness to protect the environment. These activities are the cause of the environmental damage in the Serdadu Pantai novel by Laode Insan. This study aims to find out and describe ecocriticism in the Serdadu Pantai novel by Laode Insan related to the environmental damage, the behavior of the characters causing the environmental damage, and social and economic backgrounds as a factor in the occurrence of the environmental damage in the novel of Serdadu Pantai by Laode Insan. This study applies a qualitative research employing an ecocriticism approach. The primary data source of this study is the Serdadu Pantai novel by Laode Insan published by PT Grasindo in 2019. The data in this study is a fragment of the text of the Serdadu Pantai novel by Laode Insan which allegedly contains ecological criticism. The secondary data sources are journals and books related to environmental ecology and literary ecocriticism. The results show that; (1) the environmental damage in the Serdadu Pantai novel was demonstrated through coral reefs damage and water pollution caused by the behavior of people who utilize natural resources in a way that is not in accordance with the concept of conservation, such as using trawlers, poisons, and bombs to catch fish, and also through the characters’ way of thinking toward the environment; (2) the social and economic background as a factor in the occurrence of the environmental damage was demonstrated through a social background that lacks education about nature conservation which later gives impact on long-term environmental damage. Economic problems of livelihoods that depend on marine resources as the main source of income have also created excessive exploitative behavior of the community which causes damage to the marine ecosystems.

The pre-test data of experimental class students' learning outcomes showed an average of 66.00 while the post test results were 85.00 so there was a difference of 19.00. The results of the paired sample t-test on the poster media showed that student learning outcomes had a Sig value. (2-tailed) 0.000 <0.05 while the t-count value is 15.855 > the t-table value is 1.688. In addition, the results of the assessment of student attitudes during the learning process showed a value of 87.57%. The benefit of research is that it provides a choice of teaching models and media for teachers and students to help students understand procedural texts.

Abstract

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the mass media was critical in conveying information about public health concerns and initiatives by the government aimed at mitigating the pandemic. This study used content analysis to determine how the COVID-19 news was framed in Indonesian and Malaysian media published between January and March 2021. This study examined the Republika and The Star newspapers. According to the findings of the data analysis, the results of this research found five general topics in both newspapers: public health, government policy, economics, politics, and culture and religion. The Republika newspaper publishes the most articles on public health, whereas The Star newspaper publishes the most articles on government policy, economy, politics, culture, and religion. However, public health and government policy are more popular topics in both countries. Meanwhile, based on the two newspapers, there are five types of news tones: solutions, fears, impacts, suggestions, and conflicts. A fearful tone is prevalent in Republika news, while the other four news tones may be found in The Star. The high prevalence of news with a fearful tone in the Republika newspaper is due to the high death rate caused by COVID-19, as well as the emergence of a new variant of COVID-19, even though news in Malaysia is widely broadcast using a solution tone and positive messages to readers.

Abstract

This study focuses on the need for effective learning media in teaching listening skills in speech texts at the junior high school level. This article aims to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of learning media based on the Articulate Storyline in improving students' ability to listen to speech texts. The research method used is research and development with a one-group pretest-posttest design. Data were collected through pretests and posttests, followed by normality tests and paired sample t-tests to evaluate the significance of the results. The results showed that the Articulate Storyline media that had been improved based on expert input proved effective, with a significant increase in student learning outcomes from pretest to posttest. The normality test confirmed the normal distribution of the data, and the paired sample T-test showed a substantial difference between the pretest and posttest, supporting the hypothesis that this medium positively impacts students' ability to listen to speech texts. This study concludes that the Articulate Storyline media is an effective and useful learning tool for improving the listening skills of speech texts in junior high school students.
