Abstract

This study aims to explore students' perceptions of the effectiveness of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) in the English Education Study Program at Nias University. Using a qualitative approach with a case study design, data were collected from 30 fourth-semester students through questionnaires and interviews. The findings reveal that the majority of students have a positive perception of PjBL's effectiveness in enhancing learning outcomes, developing 21st century skills, and increasing motivation and engagement in the learning process. Notably, 96.67% of participants acknowledged that the skills gained through PjBL are beneficial for their teaching practice, emphasizing the method's relevance in connecting theoretical knowledge with practical application. However, challenges such as uneven task distribution within groups and insufficient guidance from instructors were identified as areas needing improvement. The study highlights the importance of instructor involvement in facilitating the PjBL process, where effective guidance and support from educators are crucial for success. Students expressed appreciation for the hands-on experience provided by PjBL but noted feelings of being overwhelmed by group work demands, particularly when responsibilities were not evenly shared. The findings suggest that educators should adopt innovative teaching methods that engage students and prepare them for professional demands. Future research is recommended to expand the participant scope and utilize a mixed-methods approach to gain a more comprehensive understanding of PjBL's impact across various educational contexts. By addressing the identified challenges and leveraging PjBL's strengths, educators can create more effective learning environments that meet students' needs.

Abstract

Reading aloud is an important basic skill in English language learning. However, students in class VIII-A UPTD SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli are facing difficulties in reading aloud, such as incorrect pronunciation, monotonous intonation, low voice volume, and lack of expression. This study aims to analyze students' ability to read aloud and the factors that influence it. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach with 32 students as subjects. Data were collected through observation, reading aloud tests, interviews, and documentation. The assessment was based on four aspects: pronunciation and clarity, fluency, volume, and intonation with expression. Data analysis used the Miles and Huberman model. The results showed that most students were in the low and very low categories, and there were no students who reached the excellent category. Errors most often occurred in pronunciation and intonation, which indicates limited vocabulary mastery and weak phonological awareness. Internal factors such as lack of confidence, low motivation, and limited vocabulary were found to hinder performance. External factors, including an unsupportive learning environment and minimal practice opportunities, also contributed to students’ difficulties. In conclusion, students' ability to read aloud still needs significant improvement through regular practice, vocabulary enrichment, and teacher support in creating a conducive and engaging classroom atmosphere. This research is expected to provide input for teachers in designing reading activities that emphasize pronunciation, fluency, and expression to help students build confidence and improve overall English proficiency.

Abstract

This study aimed to increase the collaboration skill of 11th grade students in English learning through the application of the Jigsaw model at SMK Negeri 2 Gunungsitoli. The main problem identified was the low level of students' collaboration skills despite the use of group discussion methods, which were characterized by passive attitudes, lack of active contribution, ineffective communication, minimal mutual respect among group members, and suboptimal role distribution in group discussions. This study used the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method conducted in two cycles, each consisting of two meetings with planning, implementation, observation, and reflection stages. Data were collected through observation sheets, interviews, and documentation, then analysed qualitatively and quantitatively. The results showed a significant improvement in students' collaboration skills after the implementation of the Jigsaw model. In Cycle I, students' collaboration skills were rated as adequate with an average score of 64, while in Cycle II, they improved to outstanding with an average score of 86. This 22-point increase indicated the effectiveness of the Jigsaw model in facilitating active participation, communication, responsibility, and mutual respect within the group. In addition, the interview findings revealed several factors that hindered collaboration, such as lack of confidence, lack of time discipline, fear of rejection, and an unfavorable group atmosphere. This study implied that the Jigsaw model had proven effective in overcoming these barriers by clearly dividing tasks, forming expert groups for in-depth material exploration, and fostering individual and collective accountability. Thus, the implementation of the Jigsaw model could be an effective strategy to enhance students' collaboration skills in English language learning at vocational high schools, ultimately supporting the achievement of better learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the use of skimming and scanning techniques in reading instruction implemented by the English teacher for eighth-grade students at UPTD SMP Negeri 1 Mandrehe Barat. The research focuses on how these techniques are applied during classroom activities and explores the challenges faced by the teacher in the teaching process. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, with data collected through classroom observations, teacher interviews, and supporting documentation. The findings reveal that the teacher was able to apply skimming and scanning effectively to improve students’ reading comprehension. Skimming enabled students to identify the main ideas, themes, and general meaning of the text, while scanning facilitated the ability to locate specific information such as names, dates, and key terms. These techniques not only improved reading speed but also encouraged more active participation among students, creating a more interactive learning atmosphere. However, the study also identified several obstacles, including limited instructional time, variations in students’ reading proficiency levels, and challenges related to inadequate vocabulary mastery, which sometimes hindered comprehension. Despite these challenges, the integration of skimming and scanning proved beneficial in motivating students to read more purposefully and strategically. The study concludes that these reading strategies play a vital role in enhancing comprehension and engagement in English language learning. It is recommended that teachers receive further professional development and be supported with appropriate teaching resources to optimize the application of skimming and scanning techniques in various classroom contexts.

Abstract

his study aims to analyze students' attitudes toward learning English reading in seventh-grade students at Tomosa 1 Private Christian Junior High School. The research method used was descriptive qualitative, with data collection techniques through observation, interviews, questionnaires, and documentation. The study subjects consisted of 38 seventh-grade students and one English teacher. Data analysis was conducted in four stages: data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing and verification. The results showed that most students had positive attitudes toward learning English reading. This was evident from their active involvement in reading texts, their willingness to answer questions based on the reading, and their efforts to understand vocabulary and text content. However, several students also exhibited negative attitudes, such as a lack of interest in reading English texts, difficulty understanding the reading content, and a tendency to be passive during the reading activity. Factors influencing students' attitudes toward learning English reading include family environment, peer influence, unsupervised use of gadgets, the teacher's reading learning methods, and students' perceptions of the difficulty level of English reading texts. In addition, this study found that the application of interesting reading strategies, the use of texts that are appropriate to students' ability levels, the integration of character education, providing motivation, and increasing interaction between teachers and students are effective in building students' positive attitudes towards reading activities.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the social interaction between English teachers and the principal in the implementation of the Subject Teachers’ Meeting (MGMP) and its impact on teacher professional development. The research was conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Tuhemberua, North Nias Regency, from January to March 2025. The population of this study consisted of the school principal and English teachers who actively participated in MGMP activities, and all participants were involved as research subjects. This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach with a field research design. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, and documentation. The data analysis technique used was qualitative inductive analysis, which included data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, supported by triangulation to ensure data validity. The results indicate that social interaction between English teachers and the principal occurred through several forms, namely supervision, coordination, collaboration, facilitation, and motivation. These interactions generally functioned well and contributed positively to teacher professionalism, work motivation, and the implementation of instructional innovations in English language learning. However, several obstacles were identified, including limited time availability of the principal, insufficient facilities and budget support, and the absence of formal reward mechanisms for active teacher participation in MGMP activities. Despite these constraints, the interaction within the MGMP had a positive impact on strengthening teacher collaboration, improving instructional practices, and enhancing the quality of learning at school. This study is expected to contribute theoretically to studies on educational leadership and teacher professional communities, as well as practically to schools in optimizing the role of principals and MGMP as effective platforms for teacher professional development.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of using a memory game as a teaching medium on the reading comprehension skills of eighth-grade students at UPTD SMP Negeri 3 Mandrehe. A quasi-experimental, nonequivalent pretest-posttest design was implemented with 60 purposively selected students, who were divided into two groups: a control group and an experimental group. The control group received conventional teaching methods, while the experimental group was taught using a memory game from the Interacty platform. Data were collected through multiple-choice reading comprehension tests administered before and after the treatment. The results were analyzed using paired and independent sample t-tests as well as N-Gain calculations to measure the improvement in reading comprehension skills. The analysis revealed that the experimental group showed a significantly higher improvement in reading comprehension, with an N-Gain score of 0.792 (high) compared to the control group’s 0.244 (low). The findings indicate that memory games effectively enhance vocabulary retention, increase student motivation, improve focus, and create an engaging classroom atmosphere. By incorporating memory games, students became more actively involved in learning, which contributed to improved reading comprehension skills. The study concludes that memory games are a valuable tool for improving reading comprehension and fostering an enjoyable and meaningful learning experience. Therefore, it is recommended that memory games be integrated into junior high school English instruction as an innovative teaching strategy to enhance students’ reading skills. The research highlights the potential of interactive and engaging methods in facilitating language learning, thus suggesting that educators should consider adopting such approaches to improve educational outcomes in reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study explores the role of cooperative learning methods, particularly the Learning Together model, in shaping student character at UPTD SMP Negeri 2 Gunungsitoli. The research employed a qualitative approach, collecting data through classroom observation of 22 eighth-grade students and interviews with an English teacher. The focus was on how cooperative learning fosters essential values such as responsibility, tolerance, collaboration, and effective communication, which are closely aligned with the dimensions of the Pancasila Student Profile. Findings reveal that the Learning Together model effectively enhances students’ social interactions, mutual respect, and willingness to participate actively in group discussions. It also promotes a sense of accountability by encouraging students to contribute ideas, support one another, and take shared responsibility for group outcomes. Beyond academic improvement, the model cultivates positive character traits that are necessary for holistic student development. Nevertheless, several challenges emerged during implementation. Some students displayed low self-confidence, while others struggled due to limited learning time and restricted access to teaching materials or supplementary resources. These barriers highlight the need for improved classroom support, extended learning opportunities, and diversified materials to optimize the effectiveness of cooperative learning. Overall, this research demonstrates that cooperative learning, when applied to English lessons, not only strengthens language skills but also nurtures character values essential for preparing students to meet future challenges. The study offers practical implications for educators, suggesting that balanced teaching strategies integrating academic competence with character development are vital within the Merdeka Curriculum framework. By addressing both cognitive and affective dimensions, teachers can create meaningful learning experiences that encourage students to grow as capable, responsible, and socially aware individuals.
