Abstract

One of the commodities with the highest economic value in the plantation sector in Indonesia is coffee. In 2016 there was a significant difference between the area of robusta and arabica coffee, with the area of robusta coffee being superior. The wide difference between robusta and arabica coffee plantations is because robusta coffee is considered a potential opportunity in developing the community's economy compared to arabica coffee with a particular market. To improve the taste or quality of coffee production, one of the factors is the roasting process. Currently, the demand for coffee production is increasing with the need for maximum quality and taste of coffee beans, so the processing of coffee plants must be very concerned and improved. Therefore this study aims to determine the roasting technique with a roasting machine and its effect on improving the quality and taste of coffee beans that are popular with consumers. This study used a Split Plot Design (SPD) using the basic pattern of a completely Randomized Design consisting of 2 levels. The first factor is the roasting time as the main plot with four levels. Then the second factor is the roasting temperature with two levels. Each factor was repeated four times so there were 32 experimental units. The results of this study indicate that in the roasting process using slow roast and fast roast techniques, roasting time affects all observation parameters, namely moisture content, pH value, brix value, flavor, aroma, and caffeine. However, the roasting temperature only affects moisture content, brix value, and caffeine.

Abstract

Air preheater as a heat recovery technology is generally applied in the powerplant industry and used to heat combustion air, which increases the efficiency of the combustion chamber in the boiler. In this case, air preheater has tubular recuperative type typically located at the bottom of the circulating fluidized boiler for utilizing the lowest temperature exhaust gas. A significant presence of SO2 in the exhaust gas can lead to cold-end corrosion and cause leaks. The low tube thickness in the air preheater provides a good heat transfer performance unfortunately the corrosion issue has not been considered. By increasing the tube thickness, its aimed to extend the life time of the tubes with good corrosion resistance. This study is performed with calculations using empirical equations and validated results using Heat Transfer Research Inc (HTRI) software. Increasing the tube thickness impacts decreasing the heat transfer coefficient, increasing the flue gas (shell) pressure drop, and increasing the fouling factor. The tube thickness which determined for the corrosion prevention design of the air preheater give an overdesign of 18.14%, a heat transfer rate coefficient of 1.726 Btu/hr. ft2. °F, a shell pressure drop of 0.000541 psi, and a fouling factor of 0.114 hr. ft2. °F/Btu.

Abstract

Shallot (Allium ascalonicum L.) is an important horticultural commodity with high economic value, but its productivity has declined, especially in several production centers, including Probolinggo Regency. Disease attacks are one of the factors causing the decline in production, prompting farmers to use chemicals to control the disease. The use of chemical fungicides frequently poses risks to the environment and food safety, thereby highlighting the need for eco-friendly alternatives such as biological agents (e.g., Trichoderma sp.) and organic fertilizers like guano. This study aimed to determine the effect of Trichoderma sp. and guano fertilizer on the growth and yield of shallots. The study used a Factorial Randomized Block Design (RBD) with the first factor being the dose of Trichoderma sp 0 (T1), 15 (T2), 25 (T3), 35 (T4) g/plant, and the second factor was guano fertilizer treatment at doses of 0 (G1), 35 (G2), 45 (G3), and 55 (G4) g/plant. The results showed that there was no interaction between Trichoderma sp. and guano fertilizer treatments on the growth and yield of shallots. However, both separately had a significant effect on several growth and yield parameters. Guano fertilizer had a significant effect on crown height, stem diameter, fresh and dry bulb weight, and root volume with an optimum dose of 45 g/plant. Meanwhile, the application of Trichoderma sp. had a significant effect on bulb diameter. The combination of biological agents and organic fertilizers demonstrated significant potential to enhance shallot productivity in a sustainable and environmentally responsible way.
