Abstract

Abstract

This research aims to describe the mathematical problem-solving abilities related to sequences and series among XI grade students at SMAN 1 Sakra, considering gender differences. The research follows a qualitative descriptive approach, utilizing interview-based test questions as instruments. These questions will be analyzed based on Polya’s problem-solving indicators. From a total of 70 students, six were selected—three male and three female students—to represent different levels of mathematical problem-solving abilities: high, moderate, and low. The findings reveal that high-ability male students understand problems, plan and execute solutions (though with operational errors), and perform checks without writing conclusions. Moderate-ability male students partially meet the problem-solving criteria. Low-ability male students do not meet all the indicators. Among high-ability female students, understanding, planning, execution, and checking occur, but conclusions are missing. Moderate-ability female students also fall short in completeness and checking indicators. Low-ability female students only meet the understanding phase.

Abstract

Mathematical critical thinking skills are critical thinking skills that involve cognitive processes and encourage students to think reflectively which are developed in mathematics learning. Mathematical critical thinking skill is necessary for students in solving mathematical problems. However, in reality, many students have low critical mathematical thinking skills. Several researchers have studied there is correlation between mathematical critical thinking skill to students habits of mind. Therefore, this research aims to determine the correlation between habits of mind and critical mathematical thinking abilities of class IX students at SMP Negeri 1 Montong Gading. This research is a non-experimental descriptive quantitative research with a correlation method. Sampling method used purposive sampling technique to obtain data from class IX B students of SMPN 1 Montong Gading with a total of 26 students as samples. Data collection techniques include giving habits of mind questionnaires, testing students' critical mathematical thinking skills and interviews. This research uses descriptive techniques and prerequisite tests. The research results show that habits of mind and mathematical critical thinking skills are included in the medium category with percentages of 65% and 62%. The results of the correlation analysis using the pearson product moment formula show that there is a significant relationship between habits of mind and students' mathematical critical thinking abilities with a correlation value of 0.481946, which is categorized as a medium level correlation. Keywords: Habits of mind, mathematical critical thinking

Abstract

This study aims to describe the level of tendency and causes of students’ errors in solving mathematic story problems. Error analysis was carried out based on the Polya's procedure reviewed from the students' learning styles. This type of research is descriptive qualitative. The sampling technique used purposive sampling and consideration from the mathematics teacher so that class VII H of SMP Negeri 13 Mataram was obtained as the research subject. The sample used was 29 students. Data collection techniques using learning style questionnaires, test questions, and interviews. Data analysis techniques are data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Based on the results of data analysis obtained from test results and interviews, it can be concluded that, students of visual learning styles tend to make mistakes at the plans implementing stage with an error rate of 63% including in the high category and the recheck stage with an error rate of 86% including in the very high category. Students of auditorial learning styles tend to make mistakes at the recheck stage with an error rate of 58% including in the medium category. Students of kinesthetic learning styles tend to make mistakes at the recheck stage with an error rate of 44% including in the low category. The causes of these errors are because 1) students are less to understand the problem, 2) less careful in doing calculations, 3) not used to writing conclusions because students used the results from the previous stage as conclusions.
