Abstract

This study examined the effect of the Discovery Learning model on the learning outcomes of fourth-grade students in Natural and Social Sciences at SD Negeri 060938 Medan Johor. A quantitative pre-experimental approach using a One-Group Pretest–Posttest Design was employed. The participants were 21 fourth-grade students selected through total sampling. Data were collected through achievement tests, a questionnaire, and documentation, and analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro–Wilk normality test, Pearson Product–Moment correlation, the coefficient of determination, and the t-test with IBM SPSS Statistics Version 25. The findings showed that the mean score increased from 52.76 on the pretest to 83.80 on the posttest. The data were normally distributed (Sig. = 0.413). Pearson correlation analysis revealed a very strong positive relationship between the Discovery Learning questionnaire score and learning outcomes (r = 0.969, p < 0.001). The coefficient of determination indicated that 93.9% of the variance in learning outcomes was explained by the implementation of Discovery Learning, while the t-test confirmed a significant positive effect (t = 17.047, p < 0.001). These findings indicate that Discovery Learning effectively improves students' learning outcomes in Natural and Social Sciences. This study contributes contextual evidence supporting the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum by demonstrating the effectiveness of Discovery Learning in promoting student-centered learning at SD Negeri 060938 Medan Johor.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effect of Project-Based Learning on eleventh grade students’ higher-order cognitive learning outcomes and learning activities in biology. A quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group was employed involving 66 students from SMA Negeri 1 Teluk Kuantan, Indonesia. The participants were divided into an experimental group receiving Project-Based Learning and a control group receiving conventional instruction. Data were collected using a cognitive achievement test based on the revised Bloom taxonomy at the levels of analyzing, evaluating, and creating, as well as structured observation sheets to assess students’ learning activities. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent-samples t-tests, and normalized gain analysis. The results revealed that the experimental group achieved a higher mean posttest score (82.62) than the control group (73.13), with a statistically significant difference (p < .05). The experimental group also demonstrated a higher normalized gain score (0.65) compared with the control group (0.47). Furthermore, students’ learning activities in the experimental class increased consistently across the intervention, rising from 78.79% to 87.88%. These findings indicate that Project-Based Learning effectively promotes higher order thinking and active engagement in biology learning. The study contributes to the literature by integrating cognitive outcomes and observable learning activities within a single analytical framework, offering practical implications for the implementation of student-centered instruction in secondary biology education.

Abstract

Community Service Program (Kuliah Kerja Nyata/KKN) is a concrete implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education in the field of community service, aiming to integrate academic learning with real social conditions in society. The 2025 KKN program of Universitas Katolik Santo Thomas was conducted in Dolok Margu Village, Lintong Nihuta District, Humbang Hasundutan Regency, under the theme “Serving, Devoting, and Sharing (BMB).” This program aimed to improve the quality of human resources and support village development through participatory and community empowerment approaches. The implementation method applied a participatory approach consisting of preparation, observation, planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation stages. The programs covered education, health, environmental care, and village institutional strengthening. The results indicate that the KKN activities had positive impacts on increasing children's learning motivation, community health awareness, environmental cleanliness, and the improvement of village administrative management and institutional capacity. In addition, the program contributed to the development of students’ character as social change agents. It can be concluded that the KKN program in Dolok Margu Village successfully strengthened synergy between higher education institutions and the community and provided tangible contributions to sustainable village development.
