Abstract

Rice husk is a potential alternative source of silica and silicon. The mechanism of heating (pyrolysis) for the decomposition of rice husk is an important factor in obtaining silica of high purity. Medium-scale pyrolysis to produce silica from rice husk serves as a bridge to connect laboratory-scale production to industrial-scale production. The purpose of this study was to model and scale up the pyrolysis process as a guidance for industrial-scale production. The research method used was experimentally based. An experimental investigation was undertaken in five stages. 1) Analyzing rice husk mass conversion using thermogravimetry analysis (TGA); 2) pyrolysis modeling based on a laboratory investigation using COMSOL Multiphysics version 5.3; 3) medium-scale experiments according to the modeling results; 4) validation of the modeling results by carrying out a medium-scale experiment; 5) silica purity analysis using SEM-EDX. The medium-scale pyrolysis simulation of silica manufacture from rice husk obtained a heating rate of 1.5 °C/min. There was an increase in the heating rate of 1 °C/min when compared to the laboratory-scale process. The pyrolysis of rice husk for the production of silica affects the mass conversion and selectivity of the resulting silica product. The mass conversion produced was 13.33% to 17.87% and the purity of silica produced was 63.99% to 82.74%.

Abstract

Topography of a volcano crater can change due to endogenic processes such as deformation or eruption, or surface processes. Erosion and deposition are surface processes that may occur and gradually change the slope of the inner volcano crater. Here, we investigated erosion and deposition processes that occurred in the Kelud crater after the 2014 plinian eruption. We used high-resolution Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) and orthomosaic images derived by drone photogrammetry that acquired between September 2018 and July 2019. We obtained hundreds of aerial images which were reconstructed to obtain 3D models of Kelud’s crater by using Structure from Motion (SfM) technique. Results show erosions at alluvial fans that dominantly located at the east valleys of Kelud crater. The erosion removed the volcanic materials up to -5 m which transported and deposited close to the vicinity of the Kelud crater. The deposition process causes the increase of the Kelud crater lake up to 3 m. Moreover, we also mapped the thermal distribution of the Kelud crater lake by using low cost thermal camera. Our thermal investigation is able to identify some hotspots at the vicinity of the Kelud crater lake with range temperature of 43.7°C – 55.3°C, while the average apparent temperature of the Kelud crater lake is ~ 29°C. This high temperature area may indicate underwater active fractures that continuously release volcanic gasses which leads to convection heat transfer through Kelud’s water lake.

Abstract

Thin films 10 % gallium oxide doped barium strontium titanate (BGST) and 10 % tantalum oxide doped barium strontium titanate (BTST) were prepared on p-type Si (100) substrates using chemical solution deposition (CSD) method with 1.00 M precursor. The films were deposited by spin coating method with spinning speed at 3000 rpm for 30 seconds. The post deposition annealing of the films were carried out in a furnace at 200oC, 240oC, 280oC (low temperature) for 1 hour in oxygen gas atmosphere. The surface roughness and grain size analysis of the grown thin films are described by atomic force microscope (AFM) method at 5000 nm x 5000 nm area. The rms surface roughness BGST thin films at 5000 nm x 5000 nm area are 0.632 nm, 0.564 nm, 0.487 nm for temperature 200oC, 240oC, 280oC, respectively, whereas the grain size (mean diameter) are 238.4 nm, 219.0 nm, 185.1 nm for temperature 200oC, 240oC, 280oC, respectively. In fact, to increase annealing temperature from 200oC to 280oC would result in decreasing the rms roughness and grain size. Therefore, rms roughness and grain size would have the strong correlation annealing temperature. Received: 9 November 2008; Revised: 24 August 2009; Accepted: 25 August 2009

Abstract

In this paper we have grown pure Ba0.25Sr0.75TiO3 (BST) and BST doped by Ferric Oxide Fe2O3 (BFST) with doping variations of 5%, 10%, and 15% above type-p Silicon (100) substrate using the chemical solution deposition (CSD) method with spin coating technique at rotation speed of 3000 rpm, for 30 seconds. BST thin film are made with a concentration of 1 M 2-methoxyethanol and annealing temperature of 850oC for the Si (100) substrate. Characterization of the thin film is performed for the electrical properties such as the current-voltage (I-V) curve using Keithley model 2400 as well as dielectric constant, time constant, pyroelectric characteristics, and depth measurement. The results show that the thin film depth increases if the concentration of the Ferric Oxide doping increases. The I-V characterization shows that the BST and BFST thin film has photodiode properties. The dielectric constant increases with the addition of doping. The maximum dielectric constant value is obtained for 15 % doping concentration namely 83.1 for pure BST and 6.89, 11.1, 41.63 and 83.1, respectively for the Ferric Oxide doping based BST with concentration of 5%, 10%, and 15%. XRD spectra of 15% of ferric oxide doped BST thin film tetragonal phase, we carried out the lattice constant were a = b = 4.203 Å; c = 4.214 Å; c/a ratio = 1.003. Received: 01 February 2010; Revised: 04 October 2011; Accepted: 02 November 2011

Abstract

In this paper, the growth of GaN:Mn thin films by plasma-assisted metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (PAMOCVD) method is reported. The method used in this study, utilizes a microwave cavity as a cracking cell to produce nitrogen radicals, which in turn reduce the growth temperature. Trimethylgallium (TMGa), nitrogen (N2) and cyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl (CpMnT) were used as a source of Ga, N and Mn, respectively, while hydrogen gas was used as a carrier gas for both TMGa and CpMnT. The effect of growth temperature and Mn incorporation on structural properties and surface morphology of GaN:Mn films are presented. The growth of GaN:Mn thin films were conducted at varied growth temperature in range of 625 oC to 700 oC and the Mn/Ga molar fraction in the range of 0.2 to 0.5. Energy dispersive of X-ray (EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods were used to analyze atomic composition and crystal structure of the grown films, respectively. The surface morphology was then characterized using both atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. A systematic XRD analysis reveal that maximum Mn incorporation that still produces single phase GaN:Mn (0002) is 6.4 % and 3.2 % for the film grown at 650 oC and 700 oC, respectively. The lattice constant and full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the single phase films depend on the Mn concentration. The decrease in lattice constant accompanied by the increase in FWHM is due to incorporation of substitutional Mn on the Ga sub-lattice. The maximum values of doped Mn atoms incorporated in the wurtzite structure of GaN:Mn as substitutional atoms on Ga sub-lattice are 2.0 % and 2.5 % at 650 oC and 700 oC, respectively. AFM and SEM images show that the film grown at lower growth temperature and Mn concentration has a better surface than that of film grown at higher growth temperature and Mn concentration.
