Abstract

This community service activity was carried out in Kuala Tungkal, Tanjung Jabung Barat Regency, Jambi Province, to address the challenges faced by fishermen in identifying potential fishing grounds. The primary focus was creating a map of potential fishing grounds based on oceanographic data to enhance the efficiency and productivity of fishermen. The methods included collecting oceanographic data, satellite imagery, and performing geospatial analysis using ArcGIS 10.8 software to predict and map the potential fishing grounds. Training sessions were held to teach fishermen how to use GPS and fishing ground maps, enabling them to predict and navigate fishing locations more effectively. This activity was carried out by involving several participations; fishermen, local government, and Fisheries Service of Tanjung Jabung Barat Regency. The map produced by the team depicts strategic locations in the waters of Kuala Tungkal (FMA 711) based on sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll-a indicators. There are 105,633 potential fishing points being identified in this area. SST values range from 28.2°C to 32°C, and chlorophyll-a values range from 0.2 mg/m³ to 2 mg/m³.  The training outcomes demonstrated that most fishermen could effectively use GPS and the fishing ground map during fishing operations. The active participation of fishermen and the provision of technology training is pivotal in the program’s success. Consequently, the utilization of potential fishing ground maps based on oceanographic data has the potential to enhance fishermen's performance and contribute to sustainable fisheries resource management in the FMA 711 area.

Abstract

In Teluk Lake, Jambi City, fishermen face productivity constraints when catching fish. Research on using Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) is necessary to enhance effectiveness and efficiency. This study, conducted in March 2024 in Teluk Lake, Tanjung Pasir Village, Jambi City waters, examines the use of FADs with liftnet fishing gear. The main findings of the research show that using FADs significantly increases catch yields and reduces fishermen's operational costs. The research methodology involved experimental fishing with a t-test to compare the catch results of liftnet using FADs and without FADs. The research showed the capture of 8 types of fish from two repetitions with two treatments (liftnet with FADs and without FADs). The total catch was 150 fish weighing 9.313 g. Catches using FADs reached 114 fish (7.219 g), while those without FADs were only 36 (2.094 g). Lambak fish showed significant results, with 79 fish (3.910 g) caught using FADs compared to 18 fish (781 g) without FADs. The T-test analysis revealed a significant difference (P<0.01) in catch results between the two treatments, both in terms of quantity (T hit>T tab (2.93 > 2.10) and weight (T hit>T tab (114.60 > 2.10)). This research has practical implications, as it demonstrates that using FADs can significantly increase the quantity and weight of catches, providing valuable insights for fishery methods.

Abstract

Teluk Kenali Lake is located in Teluk Kenali Village, Telanaipura District, Jambi City, with an area of approximately 30 ha, and has a water characteristic in the form of a basin. The main catch of fishermen in this lake is the seluang fish, which is popular with the community because of its taste and high economic value. This study used a purposive sampling method through direct observation of fishermen's catches. Samples were obtained from the catch of two fishermen using gillnet fishing gear with a mesh size of 1 inch during a 1-month study. The results showed that male seluang fish had an average length of 8.6 cm and an average weight of 4.9 g, with a b value in the length-weight relationship analysis of 2.88, a determination coefficient of 0.91, and a condition factor (K) of 1.75, indicating a less flat body. Female seluang fish had an average length of 9.04 cm and an average weight of 6.26 g, with a b value of 0.94, a determination coefficient of 0.18, and a condition factor of 1.99, indicating a less flat body. It was concluded that the growth pattern of male and female seluang fish was negatively allometric (b < 3), which means that length growth was more dominant than weight growth.

The most dominant fishing gear in PPS Belawan is purse seine. Purse seine fishing gear is an active fishing gear because in the operation of the ship, the method used is the looping of the net in schools of fish. Purse seines in PPS Belawan have various sizes and different fishing capacities. This study aims to determine and provide information about the level of productivity of the catch against the different GT sizes of different Purse seine vessels at the Port of Ocean Fisheries (PPS) Belawan North Sumatra against the size of the ship 60 GT and ≥60 GT. The method used in this research is the survey method. The data obtained were then analysed with productivity analysis and multiple linear regression analysis. Based on the results of the research conducted that the productivity of ships ≥60 GT GT size is greater than the productivity of ships 60 GT. This is because the larger the size of the ship, the more the number of catches so that the higher the productivity level. Keywords: Gross Tonnage, Productivity, Purse Seine

Abstract

This research was motivated by the ecological importance of mangrove ecosystems as natural habitats for mud crabs (Scylla spp.) and the suspected influence of mangrove density on the population of associated biota in the Mangrove Ecotourism Area of Pantai Kelapa, Tungkal I Village, West Tanjung Jabung. The main objectives of this study were to identify the types and density of mangroves, determine the species and density of mud crabs, analyze the relationship between mangrove density and mud crab density, and assess sediment composition. A descriptive analytical method was employed, using both primary and secondary data collection. The results revealed four species of mangroves (Sonneratia alba, Avicennia alba, Rhizophora mucronata, and Nypa fruticans) with total tree-level densities ranging from 366.66 to 766 individuals per hectare. Two species of mud crabs were identified (Scylla serrata and Scylla tranquebarica), with densities ranging from 200 to 566 individuals per hectare. The highest mud crab density was recorded at station 3, which also had the highest mangrove density. A simple linear regression analysis showed an R² value of 0.3226, indicating a weak correlation. These findings suggest that mangrove density has a limited and statistically insignificant influence on the density of mud crabs in the study area.
