Abstract

This study investigates lecturers' perceptions of metacognitive scaffolding in writing instruction at Universitas Halu Oleo. Utilizing a qualitative exploratory case study design, data were collected through interviews with three lecturers from the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education. Thematic analysis revealed that while lecturers acknowledge the benefits of metacognitive scaffolding for developing independent writers, they encounter obstacles such as large class sizes, time constraints, and varied student engagement. The study aimed to provide insights for improving writing instruction practices and policy development. Lecturers discovered that metacognitive scaffolding is essential for helping students develop writing performances and engagement. The study’s findings align with literature emphasizing the importance of metacognitive strategies and structured feedback in writing instruction. The integration of technology and the positive impact of lecturers' personalities further support the effectiveness of metacognitive scaffolding in enhancing students' writing performance and engagement. Lecturers perceive the implementation of metacognitive scaffolding in writing courses as crucial for improving students' writing performance and fostering independent, reflective learning, although they acknowledge challenges such as students' difficulties with coherence and vocabulary and the distractions of technology.

Abstract

The implementation of motivational strategies not only promotes a positive attitude towards writing but also encourages more effective development of students’ writing skills. This study explores lecturers’ insights on how they perceive the motivational teaching strategies in their English writing class. This study employs a qualitative approach with two English writing lecturers from Maros Muslim University as participants. Semi-structured interviews and classroom observation were the instruments used to collect the data and the data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results show that both lecturers implement motivational strategies effectively by utilizing positive reinforcement, active learning strategies, and addressing students’ difficulties. Positive reinforcement significantly improves students’ motivation and writing performance. It was strengthened by the observational data that showed both lecturers constantly praised students whenever they responded positively during learning process. Lecturers emphasize that giving active learning strategies can motivate students to engage actively in writing tasks, which can enhance motivation and writing proficiency. The lecturers also acknowledge that addressing students’ difficulties is essential in reducing their anxiety and fostering confidence in writing. Recognizing and responding to students’ difficulties can reduce anxiety and encourage them to share their thoughts more confidently in writing.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the perceptions of bilingual teaching held by both teachers and students, as well as the processes used to conduct bilingual language instruction and the results obtained from using bilingual language education. The qualitative research approach was utilized for this investigation. For the purpose of this study, a teacher and ten students from the XI IBB Man 2 Bone Class served as participants and served as the study's subjects. In addition to that, the data gathering was done by a combination of observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings indicated that teachers and students had a favorable impression of bilingual education, placing it in the category of highly perceived bilingual education. The incorporation of bilingual education, which is soundly founded on Baker's theory (2001), comprises the separation of language and the concurrent use of language inside a lesson. Last but not least, there was a beneficial effect that teaching students in two languages has on the overall accomplishment of such students. The present study implies that the bilingual education approach could foster students' EFL repertoires in the context of Senior high school students and specifically within rural regions, as evidenced by the study.

The experimental group experiences cooperative learning strategies, while the control group follows traditional teacher-centered methods. Findings reveal a significant increase in classroom engagement within the experimental group, marked by enhanced student participation and a positive learning atmosphere. Academic achievement shows notable improvements, emphasizing the efficacy of cooperative learning in fostering deeper understanding and critical thinking skills. Teacher perspectives undergo positive shifts, reflecting increased job satisfaction, while students express a preference for the collaborative nature of cooperative learning. Positive changes in group dynamics, contextual considerations such as class size, and the crucial role of teacher commitment emerge as significant factors. Abstract

Digital learning has become a potential learning tool since the COVID pandemic which causes the use of new technologies including digital games-based language learning. However, the implementation still has challenges due to technical, instructional, and financial barriers. Previous studies suggest exploring more teaching experiences related to the use of digital games-based language learning for future contributions. This study aims to explore the implementation of digital games-based language learning in higher education. To achieve this goal, this study was conducted in an Indonesian higher education, the State University of Makassar by applying a qualitative case study to collect data. The researcher collected the data from 2 lecturers recruited using a convenient sampling technique. The thematic analysis was used to analyze the collected data. This study explores teacher experiences in using digital games-based language learning in a speaking classroom. This study found that the lecturers plan, implement, and evaluate digital games-based language learning in three categories namely well, moderate, and low implemented. From this result, it is claimed academically that digital games-based language learning (DGBLL) can be planned, implemented, and evaluated strategically in speaking classrooms based on learning objectives, learning outcomes, and students' learning needs. Combining technology with game-based learning, education can be more dynamic and relevant, accommodating a variety of learning styles and motivating students to be more actively involved in the learning process.
