Abstract

Background: Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans is a major periodontopathic bacterium with multiple virulence factors, including LPS. LPS is a potent stimulator cytokines proinflammatory such as TNF-α. Nannochloropsis oculata is a green micro algae that hasanti-inflammatory effects. Purpose: The aim of this study was to prove the effect of Nannochloropsis oculata extracts to decreased levels of TNF-α which induced by Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans bacteria. Materials and Methods: The experiment was held post test only control group design. 48 male wistar rats divided into 6 groups. K1 group was negative control group without any treatment, K2 group induced by Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans bacteria, K3 group treated with minocycline antibiotics 0.1%, and the other groups K4, K5, K6 were treated with Nannochloropsis oculata extract on various concentration that is 2.375%, 2.5%, 2.625%. After treatments on the 37th day, all groups of rats were euthanized and measured the levels of TNF-α in gingival tissue by ELISA. All of thedatas were analyzed by Kruskal Wallis dan Mann-Whitney U test. Result: This study showed the levels of TNF-α K2 group (36.9444) was significantly higher than K1 group(27.8889). K3 group (29.2778) showed no significant decreased compared to K2 group (36.9444). K4 (35.2778), K5 (33.1111) and K6 (29.2778)groups showed no significant decreased levels of TNF-α compared to K2 group (36.9444). Conclusion: Nannochloropsis oculata extracts can not reduce the levels of TNF-α in rats which induced by Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans bacteria.

Abstract

Background: Children with autism have difficulty controlling the movement of tongue that food often cannot perfectly swallowed . Parents play a very important role in maintaining dental and oral hygiene for children with autism. The behavior of children with autism is strongly influenced by the parent’s level of education. Objective: to determine the correlation between parent’s level of education and the level of oral hygiene in children with autism (measured by OHI-S). Methods: This type of research is analytic observational, with a cross sectional approach. Simple random sampling technique was performed. The total sample was 23 students of Mutiara Hati Surabaya Autism Special School. OH Index form by WHO was used to collect the data of dental hygiene and a questionnaire form by RISKESDAS was used to collect data of parent’s level of education. Results: There is a significant correlation between the parent’s level of education and OHI-S in children with autism (<0.05) ,R = -0.49 means the correlation is sufficient. The lower the level of dental and oral hygiene the higher the level of education of their parents. Conclusion: There is a correlation between the parent’s level of education and dental and oral hygiene in children with autism at Mutiara Hati Special School.

Abstract

Background: The prevalence of dental caries in Indonesia reaches 88.8%. Chlorhexidine, although effective, has side effects such as tooth discoloration. Cinnamomum zeylanicum is rich in cinnamaldehyde and eugenol, with antibacterial activity that makes it a natural alternative. Objective: To assess the effectiveness of Cinnamomum zeylanicum essential oil against Streptococcus mutans inoculated in Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) in preventing dental caries. Method: This study used 20 male Wistar rats, divided into five groups: negative control, positive control, and three treatment groups with Cinnamomum zeylanicum essential oil concentrations of 6.25%, 10%, and 12.5%. Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) was inoculated orally in 0.2 ml using a pipette for three consecutive days. During the study, rats were fed a diet mixed with a sucrose solution (600 mg of sucrose dissolved in 1 liter of Aquadest) at a 1:500 ml-to-pellet ratio to induce caries. After 20 days of treatment, data were collected using a bacterial inhibitory zone assay by disk diffusion and salivary pH measurement. Data analysis was performed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Tamhane’s post-hoc test, and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results: One-way ANOVA test showed no significant differences in the inhibitory zone (p>0.05). Post-hoc tests showed that all groups were not significant (p>0.05). The Wilcoxon signed-rank test showed significant differences in salivary pH before and after treatment (p<0.05). Conclusion: Cinnamomum zeylanicum essential oil has potential as an antibacterial agent and natural alternative in preventing dental caries against S. mutans, and is able to change the salivary pH to alkaline.
