Abstract

Ground vibrations are waves that occur in the ground caused by an energy source. Ground vibrations due to blasting activity can affect buildings around the blasting area, including residential areas. Large peak particle velocity (PPV) can cause damage to people's homes. Data collection was carried out by dividing the data population into two, the direction of rock throwing based on the initiation point away from the measurement point and the direction of rock throwing based on the initiation point approaching the measurement point. During the research, values were obtained PPV maximum is 3.03 mm/s with the initiation point close to the measurement point and there is a free face and walls at the blasting location, the PPV minimum of 0.4 mm/s with the initiation point away from the measurement point and there is a free face at the blasting location. Based on the results of calculating the predicted PPV value, an error percentage of 15.74% was obtained with the actual PPV value at the research location. From the results of the analysis and calculations, it was found that the direction of the rock throw with the initiation point closer to the measurement point had a greater value.

Abstract

Pit design in surface mining requires a systematic approach that considers operational capacity and efficiency to ensure optimal production target achievement. In the actual condition of the second quarter of 2025, pit X design at PT Y was carried out manually using a trial-and-error method. This method was time-consuming and less flexible to parameter changes, and caused significant deviations from production targets, with overburden reaching 110%, coal only 89%, and stripping ratio increasing to 4.19 from the target of 3.39. This study aims to develop pit design based on Mine Scheduling Concept using SPRY Scheduler software to improve operational effectiveness and efficiency. An applied quantitative method was implemented by integrating reserve data from Minescape, heavy equipment parameters including availability, utilisation, and hourly rate, as well as a mining calendar aligned with operational conditions in the third quarter of 2025. The results show that the generated pit design achieves production targets with very high accuracy: overburden of 4,093,991 Bcm with a deviation of -0.02%, coal of 1,206,663 MT with a deviation of 0.00%, and a stripping ratio of 3.39 as targeted. The application of SPRY Scheduler produces measurable, accurate, and adaptive pit designs without trial-and-error processes, supporting efficient and sustainable mine planning.

Abstract

This research investigates the Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) resulting from blasting operations at Pit Pinang, PT Bukit Baiduri Energi, employing two prediction approaches: Non-Linear Geometric Regression and the USBM Oriard’s Formula. Ground vibration measurements were recorded over a one-month period, from October 9 to November 8, 2025. The findings indicate that the non-linear regression model achieves a higher predictive accuracy of 78.62%, outperforming the USBM Oriard’s Formula, which reaches 68.2%. Variations between the observed and estimated PPV values were affected by factors such as the location of geophones, differences in explosive charges, and alterations in borehole depths. In addition, the study evaluates optimal explosive charge recommendations in accordance with SNI 7571:2010 standards to mitigate potential structural damage in surrounding areas. By highlighting these predictive discrepancies and providing practical guidance on charge management, the research offers valuable insights for improving blasting safety and minimizing vibration impacts on nearby infrastructure. The comparison of methods emphasizes the importance of selecting appropriate prediction models to ensure both operational efficiency and environmental safety.

Abstract

Coal quality must be controlled from the pit area to the ROM stockpile to ensure compliance with market specifications. However, hauling and stockpiling processes often lead to changes in coal characteristics. This study aims to analyze variations in proximate parameters between coal from Pit B1 and ROM Stockpile Km4 at PT Trisensa Mineral Utama and to identify factors contributing to these changes. The methodology includes field sampling at both locations, sample preparation based on ASTM standards, and laboratory testing of inherent moisture, residual moisture, ash content, volatile matter, and fixed carbon. The results indicate that coal undergoes quality changes after being stored in the stockpile, marked by a decrease in inherent moisture of 2.54% (from 17.64% to 15.10%), a decrease in residual moisture of 1.42% (from 17.17% to 15.75%), a slight reduction in ash content of 0.16%, a decline in volatile matter of 0.28%, and a reduction in fixed carbon of 0.18%. These changes are influenced by field conditions, material contamination during mining, rainfall, coal porosity, and handling activities at the stockpile. The findings highlight the need for improved sampling management, better surface water control, and stricter material handling procedures to minimize coal quality degradation.

Abstract

Guaranteeing the geotechnical stability of slopes is an absolute prerequisite for the sustainability of open pit mining operations, considering the potential for multidimensional losses due to slope failure. The specific geological conditions at PIT B1 PT. Pancaran Surya Abadi, which is composed of sedimentary rocks (coal, sandstone, and claystone), are susceptible to degradation and softening, especially due to high rainfall that causes an increase in pore water pressure and a decrease in rock shear strength. This study aims to analyze the stability of highwall slopes using the Morgenstern-Price Method to determine the Safety Factor (SFF) value according to Ministerial Decree number 1827 K/30/MEM/2018, and continued with a semi-quantitative risk analysis. The analysis results show that the initial slope has a static SFF of 0.77 (Not Safe). After redesign, the recommended optimal single slope geometry is: sandstone (Height 5 m, Angle 20°, Berm 5 m) and claystone (Height 10 m, Angle 60°, Berm 5 m). This redesign resulted in a FK of 1.34 (Safe). Sensitivity analysis to groundwater level rise (GTL) showed that the GTL value remained safe (GTL ≥1.30) up to a 30% increase in GTL. However, a 40% to 80% increase in GTL caused the GTL to decrease (1.28–1.21), classified as Medium Risk. A 100% increase in GTL drastically reduced the GTL to 1.05, classified as High Risk. This study emphasizes the need for close monitoring and additional drainage to maintain the long-term stability of slopes under the influence of rainfall.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the characteristics of the soil at PIT North with two highwall and lowwall locations at PT Karya Putra Borneo, Kutai Kartanegara Regency, East Kalimantan Province. The research method was carried out by collecting primary data from the results of field tests using the sondir method with the Cone Penetration Test(CPT) tool and laboratory tests using physical properties, specific gravity, grain size, soil consistency, and consolidation tests, as well as secondary data from the results of literature studies. The parameters analyzed for soil characteristics include the sondir cone resistance (qc) value, grain size fraction distribution, soil plasticity index, and the rate of land subsidence through consolidation. The results showed that at PIT North the highwall area had a qc value of 5.6 Mpa, Fr 0.2%, IP 8.06%, Cc 1, a large rate of land subsidence of 3.3 mm with a settlement period of 4 years. In the lowwall area with a qc value of 10.31 Mpa, Fr 0.16%, IP 6.39%, Cc 0.535, the rate of settlement was 4.4 mm with a settlement period of 3 years. From these results, it is concluded that the soil at the highwall and lowwall locations has different compressibility, seeing the different soil Cc values and the soil plasticity index that affect the compressibility level of the soil and the value of the land settlement rate.

Abstract

Soil strength characteristics are strongly influenced by its physical and mechanical properties, one of which is shear strength. Soil shear strength is affected by cohesion (c), internal friction angle (ϕ), and soil moisture conditions. In open-pit mining conditions, soil moisture content is greatly influenced by rainfall and water seepage, which can increase the degree of saturation within the soil mass. An increase in the degree of saturation generally leads to a rise in pore water pressure, thereby reducing the effective normal stress and resulting in a decrease in soil shear strength. This study aims to determine the effect of the degree of saturation on soil shear strength. This research employs a quantitative method to analyze the influence of the degree of saturation under three conditions (natural, dry, and saturated) on soil shear strength through laboratory testing using the direct shear test. The tests conducted include soil physical properties testing in accordance with SNI 1965-2008, specific gravity testing based on SNI 1964-2008, and soil shear strength testing following SNI 3420-2016. The results indicate that the average degree of saturation under natural conditions is 64.63% with a cohesion value of 7.4 kN/m², under dry conditions is 33.18% with a cohesion value of 8.2 kN/m², and under saturated conditions is 83.08% with a cohesion value of 3 kN/m². It can be concluded that a higher degree of saturation or more saturated soil samples result in lower cohesion values, whereas a lower degree of saturation or drier soil samples lead to higher cohesion values.

Abstract

Coal stockpile volume measurement is an essential part of mining production control. This study aims to evaluate the calculation of coal stockpile volume using a Total Station (TS) at PT. Bukit Baiduri Energi, Kutai Kartanegara Regency, East Kalimantan Province, and to assess the accuracy and effectiveness of this method in operational activities. Data acquisition was carried out through direct field measurements using a Total Station with a detailed surface point survey method. The collected data were processed using Minescape 5.7 software to generate a triangulated surface model, and the volume was calculated using the Cut and Fill method. The results show that the Total Station method produced a stockpile volume of 21,069.15 m³ with a high level of accuracy due to direct field measurement. This method provides advantages in elevation data accuracy; however, it requires relatively more time and manpower during the data acquisition process. Based on these findings, the use of Total Station is recommended for stockpile volume calculations that require high accuracy, particularly for production evaluation and coal reserve reporting.

Abstract

Slope failure can occur even though slope design and reinforcement have been carried out. However, before it completely collapses, there are often signs from the slope. These signs should be carefully observed through slope monitoring or surveillance activities to provide advance warnings regarding the development of slope instability, allowing mitigation measures to be implemented to reduce or avoid the impacts of instability, as well as to predict the timing of landslides using Inverse Velocity. This study was conducted at the PIT of PT Fajar Sakti Prima in East Kalimantan Province. Observations were carried out over 39 days to obtain deformation behavior, velocity values for mitigation actions, and inverse velocity values to predict the timing of landslides. In this observation, the deformation behavior values at PM 01, PM 02, and PM 03 were initially linear, then exhibited progressive behavior on November 7-8, 2024. The predicted landslide timing from this observation was November 20-21, 2024. Based on velocity values correlated with the TARP, critical categories were obtained at 7.40 - 9.86 cm/day and very critical at >26.17 cm/day
