Abstract

lope stability in open-pit mining is a critical aspect influenced by the geotechnical conditions of slope-forming materials, particularly the presence of a degradation zone. This study aims to determine the depth of the degradation zone or Fully Disturbed Limit (FDL) and to analyze its role in the stability of the highwall slope at Pit North, PT Karya Putra Borneo. The research employs a quantitative approach using secondary data, including slope geometry and geotechnical parameters, combined with slope modeling using Slide 6.0 software. The depth of the degradation zone is determined based on a disturbance factor (D) value of 0.7, representing mechanical excavation methods. The results indicate that the degradation zone extends to a depth of approximately 3.9 meters from the slope surface, forming a relatively weaker layer compared to the underlying material. This zone has the potential to act as a weak plane that controls slope failure mechanisms. Therefore, the depth and position of the degradation zone are key factors that must be considered in slope stability analysis to support safer and more effective slope design in open-pit mining.

Abstract

The Luyo area, Polewali Mandar Regency, West Sulawesi Province, has a high dependence on groundwater as the main source of water for domestic and community activities. Increasing groundwater utilization may potentially disturb the natural hydrogeological balance if it is not properly managed. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of natural hydrogeological conditions is essential as a basis for sustainable groundwater management. This study aims to determine the hydrogeological conditions of the study area, the natural groundwater balance, and the groundwater flow pattern and hydraulic head distribution through natural-condition hydrogeological modeling. The research methods include hydrological analysis, groundwater level measurements, electrical resistivity surveys using the Schlumberger configuration, pumping tests, and steady-state numerical groundwater modeling based on conceptual and mathematical approaches. The results indicate that the hydrogeological system in the study area consists of unconfined and semi-confined aquifers controlled by local lithological and geomorphological conditions. The natural groundwater balance shows that the study area remains in a relatively balanced condition, with groundwater recharge primarily derived from rainfall infiltration. Groundwater flow generally follows the topography, moving from recharge areas toward discharge zones such as rivers and springs. Model calibration results show good agreement between simulated and observed hydraulic heads. The developed natural-condition hydrogeological model is expected to serve as a baseline reference for evaluating future changes in the groundwater system due to human activities and environmental changes

Abstract

Blast hole drilling is an initial stage that plays a critical role in determining the success of blasting activities in mining and construction operations. Drilling quality directly affects rock fragmentation, drilling equipment efficiency, drilling equipment productivity, as well as blasting safety and costs. This study aims to analyze the influence of drilling parameters on blast hole quality, including hole diameter, drilling depth, hole inclination, and the suitability of drilling patterns with respect to the planned blasting design. The research methodology involves field observations, actual measurements of drill holes, and analysis of data obtained from drilling and blasting productivity. The results show that deviations in hole depth and direction can lead to irregular distribution of blasting energy, resulting in suboptimal rock fragmentation and an increased potential for flyrock and overbreak. In addition, the selection of appropriate drilling methods and equipment based on rock mass characteristics has been proven to improve productivity and blast hole quality. Therefore, controlling drilling parameters and implementing proper operational procedures are essential to enhance the overall effectiveness and productivity of blasting activities. This study is expected to serve as a reference for the planning and evaluation of blast hole drilling activities to achieve more efficient, safe, and economical operations.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the soil classification of rock disintegration products based on the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) and analyze its relation to sample depth variations on the lowwall slope of Pit North, PT Karya Putra Borneo, Kutai Kartanegara Regency, East Kalimantan. Soil samples were obtained through the Slake Durability test, simulating rock weathering from wetting and drying cycles, producing fine particles classified as weathered soil. These samples were analyzed for physical properties using Atterberg Limits tests and Grain Size Analysis. Observation point coordinates were X 508523.011 m, Y 9922791.186 m, at an elevation of 87.548 m. Drilling indicated soil material at 0–1.5 m depth; claystone with coal fragments at 2.97–4.44 m; siltstone with coal fragments at 4.44–10.55 m; and claystone at 12.05–29.36 m. USCS classification showed the materials were dominated by fine-grained soils: clay (CL) and silt (ML), with minor silty sand (SM). Correlation with borehole depth revealed no significant changes in soil classification, indicating that depth variations primarily affect soil physical properties rather than its classification type.

Abstract

At the research location at PT. Ansaf Inti Resource, there are several mining stages such as exploration. In the exploration itself, drilling and logging activities are carried out. However, if not careful in calculating coal resource estimates, there can be potential discrepancies between the estimated coal resources based on the results of drilling data identification and well logging data with the actual results. Exploration activities are activities that are often carried out by companies to determine reserves in an area. Without carrying out these activities, companies will have difficulty estimating the profits to be obtained. To obtain the data needed to carry out exploration activities such as calculating the quality and quantity of coal, it is necessary to carry out drilling such as the full coring method and also carry out logging activities to complete the data and also as comparative data from core drilling. Coal Resources are part of a coal deposit in the form of a certain quantity and have reasonable prospects that allow for economic consideration. Coal resources are divided according to the level of geological confidence into inferred, indicated, and measured categories. Therefore, in this study, the author will calculate coal resources from exploration data collection such as coring data, cutting data, and well logging data as well as coal quality data and process it in Minescape 5.7 software so that it can obtain an estimate of coal resources for each seam at the research location.

Abstract

This study presents a finite element analysis of the stability and interface behavior of a bund wall constructed under tropical mining conditions at the Banda Mine, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. The research aims to evaluate the effects of strength degradation and geometric interfaces on the overall stability of the embankment system, which was designed to retain overburden material and mitigate slope failure under combined rainfall and seismic loading. The bund wall, with an overall height of 75 m and a base width of 130 m, was constructed using compacted sandy loam sourced from site overburden. Laboratory testing determined the geotechnical parameters of the materials, including soft clay, sandy loam, and siltstone foundation. Finite element modeling was performed on six critical cross sections to simulate progressive strength reduction representing 0%, 25%, and 50% cohesion loss. The calculated factors of safety ranged from 1.87 to 2.55 along the slope, 3.40 to 5.81 at the bund wall base, and 7.79 to 10.27 within the foundation, confirming overall structural stability under all modeled scenarios. However, local reductions in stability were observed near the interface zones and the central section of the wall at depths exceeding 25 m. These findings highlight the influence of interface geometry and strength degradation on stability performance and emphasize the need for improved compaction and continuous stress monitoring during operation

Abstract

Compressive strength, tensile strength, and shear strength are the primary parameters used to evaluate the mechanical capacity of rocks to withstand loads, endure tension, and resist shear forces. The physical property variables believed to influence these mechanical properties are moisture content and porosity. Moisture content and porosity represent the percentage of water and the volume of pores or voids within the rock, expressed in percent (%). Therefore, this study aims to analyze the influence of moisture content and porosity on the mechanical strength of rocks, specifically compressive strength, tensile strength, and shear strength expressed through cohesion (c) and the internal friction angle (ϕ) in the sandstones of the Balikpapan and Pulau Balang Formations. This research employed laboratory testing of physical and mechanical properties on intact rock samples obtained from sandstone outcrops, which were subsequently processed using statistical analysis methods, including linear regression, the coefficient of determination (R2), and the correlation coefficient (r). The results indicate that variations in moisture content and porosity have a highly significant influence and are inversely proportional to the mechanical strength values of the rock. Specifically, higher moisture content and porosity lead to a decrease in the mechanical strength parameters (compressive, tensile, and shear strength) of the sandstones in both formations. This is evidenced by the negative linear trends and correlation/R2 values ranging from 0.96 to 1.

Abstract

Sandstone is one of the sedimentary rock types widely utilized in mining activities; therefore, its mechanical characteristics, particularly uniaxial compressive strength, need to be determined. This study aims to analyze the compressive strength of sandstone from the Balikpapan and Pulau Balang Formations using the Uniaxial Compressive Strength (UCS), Point Load Index (PLI), and Schmidt Hammer methods. Sampling and Schmidt Hammer testing were conducted in the field, while physical property tests, UCS tests, and PLI tests were carried out in the laboratory. The results indicate that the compressive strength of sandstone from the Pulau Balang Formation is higher than that of the Balikpapan Formation, with values ranging from 18.30–44.11 MPa and 10.05–39.51 MPa, respectively. The relationship between PLI and UCS for the Balikpapan Formation is expressed by the regression equation UCS = 16.569(Is50) with R² = 0.78, whereas for the Pulau Balang Formation the equation is UCS = 8.2664(Is50) with R² = 0.76. The regression equations were further complemented with upper and lower bounds based on the margin of error. In addition, the Rebound Number (Rn) exhibited a positive linear correlation with UCS, with coefficients of determination (R²) of 0.89 for the Balikpapan Formation and 0.98 for the Pulau Balang Formation. These findings indicate that higher UCS values correspond to higher Rebound Number values.

Abstract

Coal stacked in stockpiles is directly exposed to sunlight and rain, which can significantly affect coal quality. These enviromental conditions influence the temperature of coal piles, subsequently causing fluctuations in moisture content. This stucdy investigates the effect of coal temperature on coal quality parameters at the ROM Coal Stockpile area of PT. Mahakam Sumber Jaya. Using actual field sampling methods with 30 samples collected form the ROM C HTS (High Total Sulphur) area during November – Desember 2024, coal temperature was measured using a thermogun and quality parameters total moisture, ash content and calorific value were analyzed using ASTM standard. Simple linear regression and correlation analysis were applied for data processing. Result showed that coal temperature has very stong negative correlation with total moisture (r = -0,89), a strong positive correlation with ash content (r = 0,59). The correlation between total moisture and calorific value was strong (r= -0,66). Temperature grouping into three ranges (30-50°C, 50-70°C, and 70-95°C) showed consistent trends: total moisture decreased by 2%, ash content increased by 1%, and calorific value increased by 66 kcal/kg as tempreture rose. These findings suggest that optimal coal tempreture maangement is essential to maintining coal quality during storage .
