Abstract

This study investigates the impact of solar system comic-book media on the learning outcomes of seventh-grade students. Utilizing a quantitative pre-test and post-test experimental design, the research involved control and experimental classes. The instruments comprised a 20-question multiple-choice pre-test and post-test, with the results analyzed using the independent t-test and significance level < 0.05. The findings reveal a significant improvement in students' learning outcomes post-treatment, indicating the effectiveness of comic-book media in enhancing science education. This study underscores the potential of integrating comic-book media into the curriculum to boost student engagement and understanding

Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this study was to describe the correlation between students' perceptions of the learning environment and science learning outcomes at MTs Negeri 1 Pasuruan. Method: Non-experimental quantitative research method with correlational research type. The population of this study were students in grades VII, VIII, and XI, the research sample numbered 96 people. Results: The relationship (correlation) between students' perceptions of the science learning environment and students' science learning outcomes, obtained a significant result of 0.95 <0.05 so that it shows that there is a positive correlation between the perception of the learning environment and the learning outcomes of students. The conclusion of this study is that there is a correlation between variables X and Y classified as very strong in the correlation test interpretation table. Novelty: This study highlights a very strong correlation between students' perceptions of the science learning environment and their science learning outcomes, providing empirical support for the importance of perception in educational success, specifically in the context of MTs Negeri 1 Pasuruan.

Abstract

General Background: Science education plays a critical role in developing students’ cognitive abilities, requiring engaging and interactive learning media to optimize outcomes. Specific Background: In many Indonesian junior high schools, conventional methods such as textbooks and PPTs often fail to fully support students’ comprehension, particularly in topics like ecology and biodiversity. Knowledge Gap: Limited research has examined the application of Scratch, a website-based visual programming platform, in science learning at the junior high school level. Aims: This study aims to investigate the use of website-based Scratch media in improving the cognitive learning outcomes of seventh-grade students. Results: Using a quasi-experimental design with random sampling, two classes were assigned different media: Scratch for the experimental group and PPT for the control group. Analysis using the Independent Sample T-Test showed a significant difference (p = 0.039) in N-Gain scores, with the experimental group achieving 0.56 (medium) compared to the control group’s 0.41 (medium). Novelty: This research uniquely applies Scratch to junior high school science topics, offering an interactive approach to abstract concepts. Implications: Findings suggest Scratch can be an effective alternative to traditional media, fostering active participation and deeper understanding in science learning. Highlights : Website-based Scratch outperformed PPT in improving cognitive outcomes. Significant N-Gain score difference between experimental and control groups. Abstract

General Background: Scientific literacy is a crucial 21st-century skill that enables students to apply scientific knowledge in solving real-life problems. Specific Background: In Indonesia, the results of PISA consistently show low levels of scientific literacy among students, highlighting the need for effective instructional models. Knowledge Gap: Previous studies have explored the Learning Cycle 5E model but rarely examined its role in addressing scientific literacy using the Pan-Canadian Assessment Program (PCAP) indicators. Aim: This study aimed to investigate the Learning Cycle 5E model in improving scientific literacy among junior high school students. Results: Using a quantitative pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest, findings revealed an N-gain of 0.6 (moderate category) and no significant differences across classes based on ANOVA (p = 0.126). Analysis of indicators showed improvements with scientific inquiry (70%, good), problem-solving (56%, fairly good), and scientific reasoning (43%, fairly good). Novelty: The study highlights the integration of PCAP indicators into the Learning Cycle 5E framework, providing a structured evaluation of scientific literacy beyond content mastery. Implications: These findings suggest that the 5E model supports active and inquiry-based learning, which can be adapted by teachers to foster better scientific literacy outcomes in junior high schools. Abstract

Scientific reasoning is a fundamental skill that must be developed in higher education, particularly in science-related disciplines. However, existing learning resources often lack an explicit focus on data interpretation and evidence-based analysis, both essential for scientific reasoning. This study aimed to develop and evaluate the validity, practicality, and effectiveness of a data literacy-based e-module designed to enhance undergraduate students’ scientific reasoning skills. Employing a design and development approach based on the ADDIE model, the research included analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stages. The e-module was developed by aligning curriculum needs, scientific reasoning indicators, and core data literacy principles. Content and construct validity were assessed through expert reviews, yielding high validity scores (above 3.7) and strong reliability (α = 0.83-0.94). Small-scale trials with undergraduate science education students demonstrated high levels of learning activity (72%-94%) and consistent student engagement throughout the learning phases. Students' scientific reasoning improved significantly, with N-Gain scores ranging from 0.49 to 0.74, categorized as moderate to high, particularly in indicators such as proportional thinking. Statistical tests indicated no significant differences between class groups, suggesting consistent effectiveness across cohorts. Student feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with agreement levels reaching 100% on most evaluation indicators. This research contributes to the advancement of pedagogical design by integrating data literacy into the scientific reasoning process, offering a replicable learning resources that can be adapted across science disciplines to better prepare students for data-driven scientific inquiry in the digital era.

Abstract

General background: Education consistently requires students not only to master content but also to comprehend interrelated concepts, making misconceptions common in science learning. Specific background: In junior high schools, especially in the context of natural science learning, complex topics such as Earth layers often generate misunderstandings that affect further conceptual development. Knowledge gap: While misconceptions in science have been widely recognized, limited empirical studies explore how these misconceptions manifest in Muhammadiyah school settings. Aims: This study investigates the types and prevalence of misconceptions among Grade VII students at SMP Muhammadiyah 9 related to Earth layer material. Results: Using a survey approach with the Three-Tier Multiple Choice Diagnostic Test, findings revealed misconceptions across all subchapters. Male students showed the highest misconception rate (65.9%) in identifying elements of the atmosphere, while female students reached the highest rate (74.2%) in understanding temperature in the mesosphere and the ozone layer. Novelty: This study provides specific evidence of gender-based misconception patterns within a Muhammadiyah boarding school, offering new insights into science education challenges in faith-based institutions. Implications: Results underscore the need for diagnostic-based instructional interventions to address misconceptions and improve conceptual accuracy in science education.Highlights: Misconceptions persist across all Earth layer subchapters. Abstract

This study aims to describe students' knowledge about the phenomenon of climate change based on gender and demographic region and describe the effect of environmental attitudes on the level of students' knowledge of the phenomenon of climate change in Indonesia. This research is a quantitative survey type research using a questionnaire as the main instrument in the research. The instrument used was a questionnaire about student’s knowledge of climate change phenomena and students' environmental attitudes. The population in this study was 1080 students taken from various junior high schools in Indonesia. Sampling used a random sampling technique to obtain a total of 302 samples. Because of previous studies were only conducted abroad and in Indonesia many were conducted at the university and high school levels, this research focuses on the junior high school level with the consideration that students have received material about global warming. The results showed that students' knowledge of the phenomenon of climate change in Indonesia was relatively high. It is known that the knowledge level of female students is higher than male students and students who live in villages are higher than students who live in cities. In addition, the level of students' knowledge about climate change is also significantly influenced by students' attitudes towards the environment. This research provides further empirical insight into how teachers should facilitate students' knowledge of the phenomenon of climate change according to gender, demographic region, and attitudes toward the environment.

Abstract

Scientific reasoning becomes a prerequisite skill for studying science. The fact is that this ability, especially at the junior high school level, is relatively low. One learning model that can be applied to overcome this problem is inquiry-based, evidence-based reasoning. This type of research is a one-group pretest-posttest design with a sample of 102 students taken by the purposive sampling technique. The research instrument was a two-tier multiple-choice test based on scientific reasoning indicators. The results of the study were analyzed using the N-gain test, and a value of 0.6 was obtained, or it could be concluded that there was an increase in students' scientific reasoning in the moderate category. An ANOVA test was also carried out, and a significance value of 0.258 > 0.05 was obtained, which indicated that there was no significant difference between groups or that the EBR model had a consistent impact on increasing students' scientific reasoning. Each indicator of scientific reasoning also experienced an increase in the moderate category. The existence of this research can be of particular concern to educators as they continue to train scientific reasoning abilities in various natural science materials so that a scientific mindset is formed in students.

Abstract

Background: Despite the growing adoption of online learning, limited research has examined how synchronous and asynchronous modalities affect pre-service teachers’ mastery of pedagogical theories in Teaching English for Young Learners (TEYL) courses. During the COVID-19 shift to remote teaching, TEYL teacher education faced the challenge of ensuring future teachers developed adequate pedagogical content knowledge despite reduced face-to-face interaction. This study addresses this gap by investigating the relationship between students’ perceptions of synchronous (Zoom) and asynchronous (Moodle) learning and their academic performance in TEYL course.   Methodology: This quantitative ex post facto study involved 71 fifith-semester students enrolled in TEYL course, divided into a synchronous class (n=40) and an asynchronous class (n=31). Data were collected through a validated 34-item perception questionnaire (Cronbach’s α = 0.87) and midterm exam scores. While the sample size was relatively small, it provided initial evidence of how different modalities function in a teacher education context.   Findings: Regression analysis revealed a significant positive relationship between students’ perceptions and their midterm exam scores in both modalities ((R² = .309 synchronous; R² = .325 asynchronous). However, independent t-test results showed no statistically significant difference in exam performance between the two groups (t(69) = 0.165, p = 0.87).   Conclusion: These findings suggest that well-structured synchronous and asynchronoous learning can both support TEYL teacher education effectively, provided that instructional design aligns with students’ need and course objectives.   Originality: This study is original in its focus on pre-service teachers in TEYL course an underexplored participant group and highlights how modality choice interacts with students’ perceptions to shape learning outcomes. Its findings offer practical insights for teacher educators designing blended or hybrid curricula in the post-pandemic era.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the ninth grade students' misconceptions related to magnetism topic. For this purpose, an instrument consisting of two phases (two-tier) with fourteen multiple choice items on magnetism concepts was developed by the researcher. The diagnostic test was given to thirty-two ninth grade students. The findings indicated that 9th grade students experience misconceptions about the concept of magnetism including how to make and determine artificial magnetic poles, Lorentz force and GGL Induction. The results of this study can be used by teachers and researchers to choose substantial learning strategies for teaching magnetism material.
