Abstract

A tension exists between rationalists and empiricists regarding the nature of knowledge: innate then activated/discovered (rationalists) or constructed then invented (empiricists). The assumption is that, to a certain extent, basic knowledge seems to be innate in our mind and develops through experience by thinking processes to construct meanings. This meaning construction (thinking), mainly using language, is to make sense of and interpret the world. Meanings should be the primary motivation underlying linguistic constructions at all levels. This paper investigates meaning constructions at the lexical level of affixation by focusing on semantic behaviours of verbs in a complex word formation as an attempt: 1) to find out the semantic patterns of verb-based complex word formation, 2) to reveal if there is an iconic relationship of a sign (signifier) and its meaning (signified), and 3) to suggest for its teaching. Using semantic classes of verbs, based on situation types in deriving complex words, this study attempts to find out semantic patterns of such complex word formation and the possibility of revealing its iconicity. Using Antconc software, this study scrutinized linguistic expressions involving related verbs of state, event, and action in a corpus to reveal meaning construction at that level. The findings show several semantic patterns of verb-based complex word formation and an indication of the iconicity of signs. The paper also offers suggestions for teaching affixation

Abstract

This study aims to explain how language plays a significant role in improving the performance of regional development banks in Indonesia. The method used was qualitative with a questionnaire instrument involving 6 regional development banks in Indonesia. Some of the main findings are 24 statements were found, 19 of which fall into 5 categories, namely assertive illocutionary speech acts, directive illocutionary speech acts, expressive illocutionary speech acts, commissive illocutionary speech acts, and declarative illocutionary speech acts. In its implementation, the process emphasizing the humanistic approach scored over 90%. By prioritizing language training initiatives that emphasize the mastery of illocutionary speech acts, regional banks in Indonesia can expect improved operational efficiency, strengthened customer relationships and a more strategic approach to communication, contributing to the overall development and success of the banking sector. This study is limited to the context of only one type of bank, the regional development bank. It is further suggested that there is a strong need to provide adequate and timely capacity building for the employees of regional development banks, particularly in language training as part of public service and satisfaction development.

Abstract

RÉSUMÉ. Les objectifs de cette recherche sont pour : (1) Expliquer les maximes du principe de coopération de discours des figures féminines et des figures masculines existent dans le roman La Fiancée était à Dos d’Âne  et 99 Francs. (2) Savoir les maximes plus dominants dans le roman La Fiancée était à Dos d’Âne et 99 Francs. (3) Décrire les différences de discours des figures féminines et des figures masculines trouvés dans le roman La Fiancée était à Dos d’Âne et 99 Francs. (4) Savoir l’application du principe de coopération de discours des figures féminines et des figures masculines dans l’enseignement. Les objets de recherche sont le roman La Fiancée Était À Dos d’Âne par Vénus Khoury-Ghata et 99 Francs par Frédéric Beigbeder. Nous utilisons la théorie de principe de coopération de Grice, et la théorie de différence de discours des hommes et des femmes de Lakoff et Xia. La méthode de cette recherche est la descriptive qualitative. Le résultat de la recherche montre que les quatre maximes du principe de coopération; ; le maxime de quantité, le maxime de qualité, le maxime de relation, et le maxime de modalite sont trouvés dans tous les dialogues des figures féminines et des figures masculines. Les figures masculines et féminines, ils commettent des obéissances ainsi que des violations de certains maximes du principe de coopération. La violation du maxime de quantité est plus dominante, ça fait de 22,6% pour la violation du maxime de quantité des hommes, cependant les figures féminines, l’obéissance du maxime de quantité est plus dominante, à savoir 21%. Les différences de discours entre les hommes et les femmes peuvent être vues dans les cinq aspects observés ce sont aspect est l’intonation et la pronunciation, l’aspect du vocabulaire, l'aspect de l'attitude d'utilisation de language, l'aspect de la manière, et l'aspect de la sélection des sujets. De plus, l’apprentissage de principe de coopération peut appliquer dans l’enseignement du pragmatique pour le cours de Linguistique.Mots-Clés : Principe de Coopération, Discours, Roman ABSTRACT. (3) Describe the differences in speech of the female and male characters found in the novel La La Fiancée était à Dos d’Âne  and 99 Francs. (4) Know the application of the cooperation principle of female and male characters speech in teaching. The objects of this research are the novel La Fiancée était à Dos d’Âne  by Vénus Khoury-Ghata and 99 Francs by Frédéric Beigbeder. We use the theory of cooperation principle by Grice, and the theory of difference in speech for men and women by Lakoff and Xia. The method of this research is qualitative descriptive. The research result shows that the four maxims of the principle of cooperation; the maxim of quantity, the maxim of quality, the maxim of relation, and the maxim of modality are found in all the dialogues of female and male characters. Male and female characters, they commit the obedience also the violations certain maxims of the principle of cooperation. The violation of the maxim of quantity is more dominant, that is 22.6% for the violation of the maxime of quantity by men, however for female figures, the obedience of the maxim of quantity is more dominant with 21%. The differences speech between men and women can be seen in the five aspects observed which are aspect is intonation and pronunciation, aspect of vocabulary, aspect of attitude of language use, aspect of the manner, and aspect of the selection of subjects. In addition, learning the principle of cooperation can be applied in teaching pragmatics for the course of Linguistics.Keywords : Cooperation Principle, Speech, Novel

Abstract

RÉSUMÉ. Cette recherche a été réalisée dans l'objectif de développer un media alternatif pour l'apprentissage de la compréhension écrite niveau A2. Donc, l'objectif de cette recherche est Décrire le profil de la bande dessinée pour les médias d'apprentissage de la compréhension écrite de niveau A2. Cette recherche a été effectuée en utilisant la méthode de recherche RD qui consiste les étapes de développement des supports d'apprentissage qui adapte les étapes de développement de Sadiman (2018). L'entretien, les enquêtes et les fiches de validation ont été employés comme instruments pour soutenir cette de recherche. Les résultats de cette recherche est La création d'une bande dessinée pour l'apprentissage de la compréhension écrite niveau A2 présentant des matériaux d'apprentissage combiné à une série d'histoires illustrées basées sur le CECRL. Basé sur les évaluations de l'experte en éducation de la langue française et de l'expert en art, ce media d'apprentissage peut être utilisé comme media d'apprentissage de la compréhension écrite niveau A2. Mots-clés : bande dessinée, compréhension écrite niveau A2, culinaire, élaboration du support d’apprentissage ABSTRACT. This research was performed with the aim of developing an alternative learning media for French comprehension reading level A2. Therefore, the objective of this research is to describe the profile of the learning comic book for Frenc comprehension reading level A2. This research was performed using the RD research method which consists of the stages of development of learning materials that adapt to the stages of media development from Sadiman (2018). The interview, the surveys, and the validation sheets were used as instruments to support this research. The result of this research is the creation of a learning comic book for French comprehension reading level A2 that presents learning materials combined with a series of illustrated stories based on the CECRL. Based on the evaluations of the French language education expert and the art expert, this learning media can be used for French comprehension reading level A2. Keywords: comic book, culinary, french comprehension reading level A2, learning media elaboration.

Abstract

Learning French for tourism purposes Français du Tourisme plays an important role in preparing students to face global challenges in the growing tourism industry. In this digital era, the use of social media as a learning tool has become a trend that promises to provide innovative and interesting learning experiences. One of the popular social media is Instagram, which provides various creative features to support the development of digital teaching materials. This research aims to develop innovative and interesting digital teaching materials for learning Français du Tourisme through Instagram social media. The research method used is development research with planning, production, and evaluation stages. Data collection was carried out through surveys and interviews to find out the needs and preferences of students, as well as their responses to the teaching materials developed. The results of the study show that Instagram social media can be an effective alternative medium for learning French tourism. Digital teaching materials developed through Instagram are able to provide fun and innovative learning experiences, thus increasing student motivation and participation in the learning process. Creative features on Instagram, such as posting pictures, videos, stories, and slide shows can be utilized optimally to present materials relevant to the tourism context. In conclusion, the development of digital teaching materials through social media Instagram is a positive step in enriching the learning experience of Français du Tourisme. However, there needs to be a balanced approach between the use of technology and effective learning strategies. This research contributes to the field of social media-based curriculum development in the context of learning French for tourism, and can be a reference for teachers and practitioners in the fields of language education and tourism.

Abstract

One way to assist students in the language learning process is by using textbooks. There is a difference in learning achievement before and after implementing literacy-based thematic textbooks with a contextual approach for students. This study aims to determine the quality and relevance of the content used in the teaching and learning process. The method employed in this research is qualitative descriptive method by analyzing the content and describing data regarding the suitability of A1 level material based on the CECRL assessment in the textbook "S’il Vous Plaît". The analysis results of the "S’il Vous Plaît" textbook indicate that it is 90% suitable based on the Lopez analysis theory. Additionally, the percentage of suitability based on CECRL A1 level includes: (1) Listening skills 96%, (2) Speaking skills 82%, (3) Reading skills 90%, (4) Writing skills 77%.

Abstract

Attention has been given to multimodal texts to investigate their potential meaning affordances that facilitate learning and raise awareness of ideological meanings. However, how learners learn to make meaning by integrating intermodal relations involving language and visual images, especially in the context of learning English as a foreign language (EFL), has not been researched much. This study investigated the emerging process of meaning-making in digital factual storytelling practices in a senior high school in Indonesia. Fifty-six students participated in this study and each produced a digital storytelling video (DST). The DST videos were analyzed using an intersemiotic complementary framework to reveal the occurrences and typical intermodal meaning-making practices, as shown in the student digital storytelling (DST) videos on autobiography. The analysis focused on describing the emerging modes of making experiential meanings of the intermodal verbal-visual relations. It was found that the process of meaning-making was dominantly constructed in an exposition manner involving the verbs within clauses for identifying and describing. The emerging meanings resulting from the multimodal affordances allow storytellers to track with the potential meanings projected by the images. The selection of digital images helps students explore words when telling a story, shifting the conventional genre of autobiography. This study indicates the need to emphasize the purpose of text and to afford multimodal features to support the achievement of communication purposes.

Abstract

In several learning methods, the Slot Board is believed to be able to solve the difficulties in learning. So in this study the researcher will use Slot Board learning media to determine students' abilities in French speaking skills at A1 CECRL level after using Slot Board media as well as students' opinions regarding learning using Slot Board media in CECRL Level A1 French speaking skills. This research uses a quantitative approach method with a one-shot case study design with datacollection techniques through post-tests and questionnaires distributed to 36 grade 10 students in the 2023/2024 academic year. The results of the research show that the overall point for speaking ability after using this media is 3252/3600, namely getting an average class score of 90.22. With the scores obtained, it can be seen that the class average assessment predicate is very good. The results of the research questionnaire show that the majority of students feel that learning using a slot board really helps the teaching and learning process because the material explained attracts students' attention to be more motivated to learn than usual because it is more fun and easy to pay attention to. Abstract

Research related to the associative meaning contained in the poem '길 (Gil)' in the anthology of poetry and prose by Yun Dong Ju aims to determine the types of associative meanings and meanings contained in one of Yun Dong Ju's poems. The meaning contained in words, phrases, or sentences in poetry can be in the form of meanings associated with something outside the language. Through the study of associative meanings, the meaning of words, phrases or sentences can be known from another point of view. In this research, the method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. After the analysis process, the writer found 4 connotative meaning data, 6 affective meaning data, 1 reflective meaning data, and 1 collocative meaning data. The most common meaning found in this study is affective meaning. This shows that in the poetry that has been analyzed, many poets use words, phrases or sentences to express the feelings experienced during the Japanese colonial period in Korea.

Abstract

Abstract: One of the fundamental steps to improving human resources is eliminating illiteracy within the community. This research examines efforts to address illiteracy in Sukajaya Village, Tarogong Kidul Sub-district, Garut Regency. Despite having educational facilities up to the Vocational High School level, many adult residents, particularly mothers, still face challenges with literacy. The Arisan Baca Indung program aims to empower women by enhancing their reading skills through a creative group learning approach. Participants also engage in social activities like arisan. The program's primary objectives are to reduce illiteracy, increase awareness of the importance of education, and promote women's involvement in local economic development through agricultural opportunities. It is expected to positively impact family welfare and children's education in Sukajaya Village.Keyword: Illiteracy; learning; housewife; reading; writing.Abstrak: Salah satu langkah fundamental yang perlu dilakukan untuk meningkatkan kualitas sumber daya manusia adalah memberantas buta aksara di kalangan masyarakat. Penelitian ini membahas upaya mengatasi buta aksara di Kelurahan Sukajaya, Kecamatan Tarogong Kidul, Kabupaten Garut, yang meskipun memiliki fasilitas pendidikan hingga tingkat Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan, masih menghadapi tantangan terkait tingkat literasi masyarakat dewasa, khususnya ibu-ibu. Program Arisan Baca Indung dirancang untuk memberdayakan perempuan dengan meningkatkan kemampuan membaca melalui pendekatan kelompok belajar yang kreatif, di mana peserta juga dilibatkan dalam kegiatan sosial seperti arisan. Tujuan utama program ini adalah menurunkan angka buta aksara, meningkatkan kesadaran akan pentingnya pendidikan, dan mendorong partisipasi perempuan dalam pengembangan ekonomi lokal melalui potensi pertanian. Program ini diharapkan dapat memberi dampak positif bagi kesejahteraan keluarga dan pendidikan anak-anak di Kelurahan Sukajaya.
