Abstract

This study investigates the correlation between forgiveness and inner peace and examines differences based on gender and place of residence among emerging adult Muslim university students in Indonesia. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 438 randomly selected students (90 males, 348 females) from 17 universities across Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi. Inner peace was measured using a 19-item validated scale (α = 0.764), while forgiveness was assessed with an adapted TRIM-18 (α = 0.723). Data analysis involved Spearman’s rho, Mann–Whitney U, Kruskal–Wallis, and Dunn tests. A significant positive correlation was found between forgiveness and inner peace (ρ = 0.326, p < 0.001). Gender differences were evident in several inner peace dimensions—Acceptance of Loss, Inner Balance and Calmness, and total Inner Peace—as well as in forgiveness, particularly in Avoidance Motivation and overall Forgiveness scores. Residence-based differences were also observed. Kruskal–Wallis tests showed significant group differences in Avoidance and Benevolence Motivation. Dunn’s post-hoc tests revealed that students from mountainous areas had significantly lower avoidance motivation than those from coastal regions, while highland residents showed higher benevolence motivation than lowland residents. These findings suggest that gender and geographic environment significantly influence students’ emotional and spiritual well-being. This study underscores the importance of promoting inner peace and forgiveness in higher education settings and provides valuable insights for educators and counselors to cultivate supportive campus environments that foster students’ holistic development.

Abstract

This study explores the psychological and cultural dimensions of Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) among university students in Cirebon, Indonesia. Triggered by the rapid rise in social media engagement, FoMO has become a prevalent issue affecting students’ emotional well-being, academic focus, and self-regulation. Adopting a mixed-methods sequential explanatory design, the research involved a survey of 300 students from IAIN Syekh Nurjati and UNTAG Cirebon, followed by in-depth interviews with 30 selected participants. Quantitative data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). Qualitative findings highlighted the influence of local collectivist culture in reinforcing FoMO, with students expressing emotional pressure to maintain online visibility for social belonging. A short-term self-management intervention conducted with 20 students showed a significant reduction in FoMO behaviors, indicating the potential effectiveness of digital wellness strategies. This study emphasizes the need for culturally sensitive approaches in addressing FoMO through emotional training, peer support, and digital self-regulation programs within university settings.

Abstract

Mental health among university students is a critical issue that affects academic performance, quality of life, and overall well-being. This study aims to develop and validate the Student Mental Health Scale (SMHS), a culturally contextualized instrument designed to assess mental health status among Indonesian university students. Utilizing a quantitative, cross-sectional design, data were collected from students across nine faculties at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. The Rasch Model was employed for data analysis, providing precise and objective insights into mental health distribution. Results indicated that 19.8% of students demonstrated healthy mental status, 59.5% experienced moderate mental health concerns, and 20.6% exhibited poor mental health. These findings suggest that approximately 80% of university students require mental health support, highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive campus-based interventions. Key stressors include academic pressures, social dynamics, and financial burdens, with female students showing greater vulnerability. Effective interventions, such as peer support programs and resilience training, are therefore essential. This study underscores the importance of distinguishing between universal mental health instruments and culturally adapted tools, with the SMHS filling a critical gap by providing contextually appropriate assessments that international scales cannot adequately capture in Indonesian university settings. The findings hold significant implications for mental health interventions and institutional strategies in higher education.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the influence of inner peace on the dynamics of conflict experienced by university students, including both intrapersonal and interpersonal conflicts. The research employed a quantitative approach with a non-experimental correlational design. A total of 82 students participated, selected through purposive sampling, consisting of 35 students residing in Islamic boarding schools and 47 non-resident students. The Inner Peace Scale, covering the aspects of acceptance of loss, inner balance and calmness, and transcending hedonism and materialism, was tested on 438 students and produced 19 valid items based on Pearson correlation validity and a Cronbach’s Alpha reliability score of 0.764. The Decisional Conflict Scale (DCS), tested on 35 students, resulted in 15 valid items with a reliability of 0.914. The Interpersonal Conflict Scale, adapted from the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode, yielded 29 valid items with a reliability of 0.932. Normality testing using the Shapiro-Wilk test confirmed normal data distribution. Pearson correlation analysis revealed that inner balance and calmness had a significant positive correlation with intrapersonal conflict (r = 0.437; p = 0.009), while acceptance of loss had a significant negative correlation with interpersonal conflict (r = -0.433; p = 0.009). The regression analysis showed that the model significantly explained intrapersonal conflict (R² = 0.361, p < 0.001), with two dimensions of inner peace having significant effects: inner balance and calmness (β = 0.665, p < 0.001) and transcending hedonism and materialism (β = -0.489, p = 0.002). For interpersonal conflict, only the acceptance of loss dimension showed a significant negative effect (β = -0.364, p = 0.033). These findings suggest an opportunity to reinforce empathic and transformative communication approaches, emphasizing both conflict resolution and the personal transformation of those involved in the conflict.

Abstract

The increasing polarization of religious attitudes in contemporary society necessitates exploring historical and theological resources that promote moderation and balance. This article delves into Imam al-Ghazali's concept of religious counseling, aiming to understand its principles and methods that can cultivate moderate attitudes among individuals and communities. Employing a qualitative approach with a focus on literature review, this research analyzes Ghazali's seminal works, particularly Ihya' Ulum al-Din and Mizan al-'Amal, to uncover how his teachings contribute to fostering spiritual well-being, ethical behavior, and social harmony. Imam al-Ghazali's emphasis on moderation, ethical conduct, and integrating spiritual and social responsibilities significantly contribute to religious counseling in contemporary contexts. His advocacy for the middle path (wasatiyyah) offers a robust framework that addresses the pressing challenges of extremism and polarization. Ghazali's teachings encourage practitioners of religious counseling to promote balance and harmony within their communities by emphasizing ethical behavior rooted in Islamic virtues. Ghazali underscores the importance of maintaining mutual respect, tolerance, and constructive dialogue across diverse backgrounds by fostering an understanding of the interconnectedness between personal spirituality and communal welfare. This approach enriches individual spiritual well-being and enhances social cohesion by encouraging individuals to fulfill their religious obligations while actively engaging in societal improvement efforts. By mitigating the root causes of extremism through a holistic approach to counseling, Ghazali's teachings provide invaluable guidance for religious counselors seeking to effectively navigate and reduce contemporary social challenges. Polarisasi meningkatnya sikap-sikap keagamaan dalam masyarakat kontemporer menuntut eksplorasi sumber-sumber sejarah dan teologis yang mempromosikan moderasi dan keseimbangan. Abstract

This article describes the exploration of religious tolerance from the perspective of Universitas Negeri Padang (UNP; Padang State University) students. The research is motivated by the development of a diverse conception of religious tolerance based on  authority of the state and the culture of local communities. Students are part of the academic community that are constantly in flux. However, the conception of religious tolerance from a student's perspective has not been developed comprehensively, so further studies are needed to understand how students explore religious tolerance at UNP. This research method uses a qualitative approach.  The subject of this study are the active students across different study programs; they are also cross-organizations, cross-religious and cross-cultural. We have also selected  the active lecturers registered at UNP. Sampling was conducted with snowball sampling technique. Data collection uses in-depth  interviews and observation.. The data analysis technique uses descriptive analysis. The results of this study reveal the indicators of religious tolerance from the perspective of UNP students, namely, being open toward differences, having mutual respect, having independence in acting, and giving the freedom for people to carry out worship, and prioritizing positive interaction between individuals and interfaith groups. The results of this study can be used to construct student religious tolerance assessments.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore the effectiveness of narrative counseling in enhancing the meaningfulness of life among high school and vocational students in Baubau City, Southeast Sulawesi Province. A quasi-experimental approach with a one-group pretest-posttest design was employed. The participants included 173 students who completed the Meaningfulness of Life Scale and 32 school counselor who had undergone narrative counseling capacity-building training. Through purposive random sampling, 34 school counselor were divided equally into experimental and control groups, with each group comprising 17 school counselor. Each teacher provided narrative counseling to 17 students identified with low to moderately low levels of meaningfulness in life. Narrative counseling sessions were conducted over 3 to 4 sessions by school counselor. The meaningfulness of students' lives was assessed through six indicators: self-understanding, positive attitude change, life purpose, strong commitment, self-direction, and effective social support seeking. Results indicated significant improvements across these indicators. Initially categorized predominantly as low, five indicators improved significantly to fairly high levels, while one indicator reached a moderate category post-intervention. The statistical analysis using the Wilcoxon test yielded a significance value of 0.01 (p < 0.05), confirming a statistically significant difference between pre- and post-intervention outcomes. The Asym.sig (2-tailed) result also confirmed this significance with a value of 0.01. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of narrative counseling in enhancing students' meaningfulness of life. Consequently, narrative counseling is validated as a valuable strategy for empowering students in high school and vocational settings, significantly fostering their sense of purpose and life direction.
