Abstract

Poor environmental sanitation in correctional facilities contributes to the spread of infectious diseases, especially in crowded conditions. Scabies is generally associated with inadequate personal hygiene and overcrowding. This study aims to examine the relationship between inmates' knowledge, attitudes, and personal hygiene practices with the incidence of scabies in Tanjung Balai Class II B Correctional Institution, North Sumatra. This quantitative case-control study was conducted from February to March 2025. This study involved 160 inmates, consisting of 80 individuals with scabies (cases) and 80 individuals without (controls). Data were analyzed using statistical tests for bivariate tests using the chi-square test to assess the relationship between variables and the test used for multivariate tests using multiple linear regression. This study found a significant association between scabies incidence and knowledge (p-value = 0.000, OR = 3.869), attitude (p-value = 0.000, OR = 3.869), and personal hygiene (p-value = 0.000, OR = 23.222), indicating that inmates with lower knowledge, negative attitudes, and poor hygiene practices were more likely to experience scabies. The results of the logistic regression test showed that the most influential variable was personal hygiene (AOR = 17.58; 95% CI = 4.99–61.94; p < 0.001). These findings suggest that improving inmates' knowledge, attitudes, and personal hygiene practices can reduce the incidence of scabies. It is recommended that medical personnel in correctional institutions provide targeted education to inmates regarding scabies prevention, with a focus on improving knowledge, attitudes, and personal hygiene practices.

Abstract

Foodborne illness remains a significant public health concern, with Escherichia coli contamination being one of the major causes. This study aims to describe the sanitation and hygiene conditions of restaurants and the presence of E. coli in side dishes in Sunggal Village, Medan Sunggal District. A descriptive research design was employed, using observation and laboratory examination methods conducted at the Medan Health Polytechnic laboratory. The study population comprised all 18 restaurants in Sunggal Village, while fried chicken samples were selected for laboratory analysis. Data were collected through direct observation using a sanitation and hygiene checklist, as well as laboratory testing of side dish samples to detect E. coli using Endo Agar media. The results showed that most restaurants did not meet sanitation and hygiene standards, particularly in terms of food handler personal hygiene, equipment sanitation, water sources, and food selection and presentation. Laboratory findings indicated that while most samples tested negative, several samples were positive for E. coli. In conclusion, the sanitation and hygiene conditions of restaurants in Sunggal Village remain suboptimal, and there is still a risk of E. coli contamination. Strengthened guidance and supervision are therefore necessary to improve food safety in the community.

Abstract

Climate change and environmental degradation have become urgent global challenges, marked by the significant rise in average global temperatures due to human activity, industrialization, and carbon emissions. The low level of environmental concern in Indonesia worsens this challenge, as reflected by the Environmental Care Behavior Index (ECBI/ IPRLH) of only 0.57 (low category). Furthermore, only 38% of Indonesian adolescents are actively involved in environmental preservation. Initial observations at Pesantren Ar-Raudlatul Hasanah Medan indicate that high institutional compliance does not fully translate into individual pro-environmental actions by santri (students). This is evidenced by inconsistent waste segregation, reliance on single-use plastics, and limited water conservation. This community service activity aimed to enhance religiosity toward environmentally friendly behavior among adolescent santri. The CBPR model was implemented from July to October 2025 at the pesantren. The results indicated that the santri’s level of religiosity was in the high category across all dimensions, and their pro-environmental behavior was categorized as good to very good, especially concerning waste disposal discipline and water conservation. Spiritual values (such as amanah and ihsan) have reached affective and behavioral stages. However, personal initiatives, such as sorting waste or reducing single-use plastic, require further strengthening. It is concluded that pesantren hold significant potential as a foundation for forming religiously rooted pro-environmental behavior.

Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) remains a significant public health issue in Indonesia, including in the working area of UPT Puskesmas Teluk Putat, Labuhan Batu Regency. Poor environmental conditions such as substandard housing, open water containers, and inadequate waste management increase the risk of DHF transmission. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between environmental sanitation and DHF incidence using a case-control approach. A total of 63 respondents were involved, consisting of 21 DHF cases and 42 controls in a 1:2 ratio. Data were collected through structured questionnaires, environmental observations, and secondary data from the health center. The results showed a significant association between water storage conditions (p = 0.019; OR = 3.76; 95% CI: 1.25–11.34) and waste management (p = 0.000; OR = 10.00; 95% CI: 2.96–33.78) with DHF incidence. However, housing conditions were not statistically significant (p = 1.000). These findings suggest that specific aspects of environmental sanitation, particularly water and waste management, play a critical role in DHF prevention. It is recommended that DHF control programs focus more on public education regarding environmental hygiene and strengthening household-based preventive behavior.
