Abstract

The proliferation of internet users in Indonesia has not been matched by adequate digital literacy competencies, resulting in misinformation spread, cyberbullying, and inappropriate content consumption, particularly among populations with limited formal education. This qualitative evaluation research was conducted at PKBM Napal Jaya from August to October 2024, employing a comprehensive framework encompassing contextual background, input resources, implementation processes, goal achievement, and program impacts. Data were collected through observations, semi-structured interviews with four key informant groups (PKBM head, tutors, administrative staff, and learners), and document analysis. Miles and Huberman's interactive model was used for data analysis, with source triangulation ensuring trustworthiness. The program demonstrated systematic planning through participatory needs assessment, adequate infrastructure including computers and WiFi, qualified bachelor-degree tutors, and effective implementation using constructivist pedagogical approaches. Learners developed competencies in internet searching, hypertextual navigation, content evaluation, and knowledge assembly, transforming from recreational technology users to functionally literate digital citizens. Findings validate that community learning centers can successfully bridge digital divides through flexible, contextualized programming that accommodates working adults, providing a replicable model for non-formal education settings and contributing actionable guidance for practitioners addressing digital literacy gaps in developing country contexts.

Abstract

This study examines how love languages are expressed and translated in the Indonesian film Aku Jati Aku Asperger, focusing on the maintenance of emotional meaning across cultural and linguistic boundaries. The research aims to identify how different forms of affection are represented in the film and how translation techniques contribute to preserving emotional authenticity in the English subtitles. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study analyzes Indonesian dialogues and their English translations to examine the relationship between linguistic choice and emotional expression. A total of 110 dialogue units were selected and categorized based on five types of love languages: Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Receiving Gifts, Quality Time, and Physical Touch. The analysis reveals that Words of Affirmation appear most frequently, reflecting the direct and sincere emotional style of the main character, followed by Acts of Service and Quality Time. The most frequently applied translation techniques are literal translation, established equivalent, and modulation, which help maintain both linguistic clarity and emotional resonance. These techniques ensure that the translated dialogues convey similar levels of empathy and intimacy as the original. The study highlights that effective film translation requires not only linguistic accuracy but also emotional sensitivity to achieve meaningful cross-cultural communication.

Abstract

This study investigates the integration of collaborative learning within mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) environments to enhance critical reading skills among English Department students in East Kalimantan. The research aims to identify learners’ and lecturers’ needs, wants, and challenges related to critical reading instruction through mobile-based collaboration. Employing a mixed-methods approach, data were collected from 55 students and 5 lecturers using a 50-item Likert-scale questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively, while qualitative responses were coded thematically using ATLAS.ti. The findings reveal that both students and lecturers highly value the incorporation of technology and collaborative activities in fostering critical reading abilities. Over 90% of respondents agreed that MALL enhances engagement, autonomy, and comprehension when combined with peer interaction and authentic materials. However, challenges such as diverse proficiency levels, limited digital resources, and insufficient professional training for lecturers were also identified. The study concludes that designing collaborative MALL frameworks—integrating discussion forums, peer feedback, and adaptive learning tools—can significantly support the development of students’ critical literacy. The results provide a foundation for developing context-specific MALL applications and contribute to the advancement of critical reading pedagogy in higher education

Abstract

General Background: Politeness strategies are essential in shaping social interaction and maintaining harmony, particularly in audiovisual translation where linguistic and cultural nuances must be preserved. Specific Background: In the 2024 film Wicked, English dialogues rich in politeness markers are rendered into Indonesian subtitles, facing constraints of space, time, and cultural divergence. Knowledge Gap: While prior studies address politeness strategies or subtitle translation techniques separately, few explore their interplay in Indonesian subtitles for contemporary films. Aims: This study investigates the types of politeness strategies in Wicked’s dialogues and examines the translation techniques applied in their Indonesian subtitles, evaluating their impact on pragmatic meaning. Results: Using Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory and Molina and Albir’s translation taxonomy, findings show positive politeness as the most frequent strategy and literal translation as the most applied technique, though modulation better preserved pragmatic force. Subtitling constraints sometimes altered politeness nuances. Novelty: This research uniquely maps the relationship between politeness strategies and translation techniques in Indonesian subtitles, providing a nuanced understanding of pragmatic preservation in film translation. Implications: The study underscores the need for pragmatic awareness in subtitle translation, advocating for techniques sensitive to both linguistic accuracy and cultural context to enhance cross-cultural communication in audiovisual media. Highlights: Positive politeness dominates Wicked’s dialogues, while modulation better preserves pragmatic force than literal translation. Subtitling constraints can reduce or alter politeness nuances, affecting cross-cultural meaning. Pragmatic awareness is essential for translators to balance linguistic accuracy with cultural sensitivity. Keywords: Politeness Strategy, Translation Technique, Wicked 2024, Subtitle, Pragmatics

Abstract

Differences between the narratives of Prophet Solomon in the Qur’an and the Bible are often treated merely as textual variations, thereby obscuring the deeper processes of meaning transformation operating between the two scriptures. This study investigates how the Qur’an systematically reconfigures earlier biblical traditions through intertextual mechanisms. Employing qualitative textual analysis within Julia Kristeva’s intertextual framework, the study compares selected Qur’anic passages with their biblical counterparts to identify patterns of narrative transformation. The findings reveal that Qur’anic narrative transformation operates through four principal mechanisms: normative haplology, functional modification, prophetic expansion, and theological conversion. Through these mechanisms, the Qur’an reorganizes shared narrative elements and constructs new semantic structures that emphasize prophethood, monotheism, and the moral integrity of Solomon. Rather than merely revising earlier traditions, the Qur’an selectively and systematically reshapes inherited narratives in accordance with its theological worldview. This study proposes a mechanism-based model of Qur’anic intertextuality that conceptualizes narrative transformation as a structured hermeneutical process rather than an incidental textual adaptation, thereby extending Kristeva’s intertextual theory into the study of sacred texts.
