Abstract

This research aimed at investigating the cultural contents implied in an English textbook. A qualitative method was used in this research which analyzed this English textbook. The data source of this research was the English textbook for junior high school students entitled “Experiencing English”. The instrument used for collecting data was documentation in the form of textbook. The data were analyzed by using Byram (1994) framework to investigate the aspects of culture. In this research, the nine aspects that have to be included in the EFL textbook were analyzed. The result showed that stereotypes and national identity was more frequently used in “Experiencing English” textbook. This aspect represents the target culture stereotypes and national identity commonly focused on the British and American cultures. In the other words, “Experiencing English” textbooks frequently used target language culture. Notwithstanding this fact, the source/local culture values as drafted in the 2013 curriculum was still implied in the textbook as intended to enable the students to reflect their own culture in English.

The number of the samples was 40 students consisting of 20 students from the class XI IA 2 as the experimental group, and 20 students chosen from the class XI IS 2 as the control group. The data of this research were collected by giving tests; (pretest, posttest), and questionnaire. The data collections were analyzed by using SPSS 17. The percentage formula was used to analyze the students’ perceptions toward the implementation of STAD in the experimental group. The result shows that the mean score of experimental group was 70.95. Meanwhile the control group was 68.70. Moreover, the significant value of both the experimental and control groups in the post-test was 0.04 which is lower than α=0.05. It means that Ha was accepted and H0 was rejected and it can be concluded that the use of STAD in teaching speaking skill enhanced the students’ speaking skill, compared to the teaching speaking in conventional method. Meanwhile, the result of questionnaires shows that STAD could enhance the students’ confidence in learning speaking skill.

Abstract

An important aspect of learning a language is to learn the culture of the language. The actual relationship between the two cannot be separated, because a language serves a particular culture and through the language the cultural values of a people are reflected. Therefore, the role of English teachers is very important in the teaching of language and culture that should always be linked together in the teaching-learning of language. The purpose of this study was to discover the perceptions of EFL teachers on integrating teaching-learning about English culture into EFL classrooms and to investigate whether or not the EFL teachers supported acquisition of cross-cultural understanding by their students. To get their results, the researchers collected data from observations in three English classrooms to look at the integration of teaching-learning about culture into the EFL teaching-learning processes. After the observations, the researchers interviewed the three teachers about the integration of culture into the EFL classroom. Then the researchers analyzed, condensed and displayed the data and drew conclusions. The results of this study showed that the EFL teachers were aware of the importance of studying the English culture but one of them did not yet focus on integrating English culture into teaching-learning EFL. This was  due to several factors such as the lack of English language knowledge of the teacher and insufficient time for teaching theory and language structures.

Abstract

Indonesia does not guarantee legitimately English as a second language. However, numerous Indonesian schools officially teach English, including pesantren (Mawardi, Maulidiansyah, Kamal, Nasai, 2019). Historically, the pesantren is an Islamic educational institution that teaches students through classical Islamic books (Fadhilah, 2011). Now, pesantren has been teaching modern lessons, including foreign languages such as English (Tahir, 2015). This study was designed to investigate the pesantren's readiness for English programs. Data collection was done by interview, observation, and documentation. Participants are people who are closely related to the object of research. A total of two English language coordinators were interviewed to obtain data on the pesantren's readiness for the English programs. The researchers also did observation and documentation to obtain supporting data from the research objects. The findings reveal that the pesantren's readiness for English language programs is outstanding in terms of the kinds of English programs, teachers' contributions, supporting facilities, and the pesantren environment itself. These findings are in line with previous researchers' findings, such as Insan (2019), Yulistiya (2020), and Setiawati (2018), stating that there are excellent programs for the advancement of students a foreign language.
