Abstract

This research aims to identify the problems faced by English teachers and solutions applied in teaching at junior high schools. This study employs a mixed method approach, combining both quantitative and qualitative methodologies in a complementary manner. The quantitative approach was conducted through questionnaires distributed to 32 respondents from 23 junior high schools, while the qualitative approach involved in-depth interviews to gain deeper insights. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis, while qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results of the study show that teachers face various problems, including limited textbooks, inadequate educational facilities, challenges in developing competencies, and differences in abilities among students. To address these issues, teachers implement a variety of solutions, such as seeking additional teaching materials, using personal facilities, attending online training, and adopting a differentiated approach in teaching. The conclusion of this study highlights the importance of greater support for teachers in the form of providing adequate facilities, professional development, and cooperation with parents and the community to improve the quality of English language learning in junior high schools.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of Canvas, a web-based Learning Management System (LMS), in enhancing the speaking proficiency of first-semester students majoring in Psychology at Universitas Muhammadiyah Aceh, Indonesia. A quasi-experimental design was employed, with 30 students divided into 15 in the experimental group (Canvas) and 15 in the control group (Zoom). Both groups participated in five online learning sessions, with the first serving as a pre-test (offline), the next three as treatment sessions (online), and the final meeting as a post-test (offline). Students' speaking skills were assessed based on Vocabulary, Pronunciation, Grammar, Fluency, and Content aspects. Statistical analysis using paired sample t-tests in SPSS 26 confirmed significant improvements in all five speaking aspects for both groups, though the Canvas group outperformed the Zoom group across all measures. The results indicated that Canvas facilitated better engagement, structured learning, and interactive communication tools, leading to higher mean scores in Vocabulary and Fluency. A post-study questionnaire also revealed strongly positive student perceptions regarding Canvas's effectiveness in task submission and online learning accessibility. These findings support the integration of Canvas LMS in higher education curricula and have practical implications for EFL educators, policymakers, and curriculum designers in optimizing digital learning strategies. The study stresses Canvas as a pedagogically effective platform for developing students' communicative competence in English.

Abstract

Thesis Defense Examination (TDE) is an assessment that most undergraduate students around the world have to pass in order to graduate from universities. Some students can pass the examination satisfactorily, while others fail due to their poor performance. In the EFL general context, the issue of poor performance of undergraduate students in the TDE conducted in English is a piece of common knowledge among lecturers as the examiners and students as the examinees. Within the Indonesian context, this study aims at investigating students and lecturers experiences in Research Methodology (RM) (focusing on written competence) and Seminar on ELT (SoELT) (focusing on oral competence) courses, where the case was taken from the English Education Department of a public university located in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. By using a purposive sampling technique, we involved five students who have passed RM and SoELT, two lecturers who teach RM, and two lecturers who teach SoELT as the participants in this qualitative research. Interviews were employed to gather the data to address the investigation. We consulted Hyland (2004) for the analysis of the teaching and learning of written competence, and Alptekin (2002) to analyze the teaching and learning of oral competence in classroom activities. The results of the analysis show that there are matches and mismatches between what was experienced by the students and what the lecturers experienced. We also found that some activities in the courses hindered students from being competent in their performance in TDE.

Abstract

AbstractPodcast is a digital recording which contains a recorded programs from television, radio, and interviews. Many researchers have discussed about the podcast as an alternative teaching media to support students developing their speaking skills. This research article aims at finding out if there is a significant improvement on students’ speaking skills by using this Podcast. Class XI IS3 was chosen as the sample of this study with total 30 students. This pre-experimental study employs pre-test and post-test. These tests are provided in the form of oral tests. The data from these tests were then calculated by using statistical formulas. The result showed that the post-test score was higher than the pre-test. The finding showed that there was a significant improvement of the students’ speaking skills performance after undertaking treatments. Thus, podcast media can be used as one of the alternative media in teaching English especially speaking skill in EFL classes.

Abstract

This study compares media coverage of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict between Al Jazeera and Western media outlets such as the BBC, CNN, and The New York Times. The study aims to discover viewpoint gaps between Palestinian and Western news coverage, assess the role of Aljazeera local reporters in promoting world awareness, and investigate biases in media stories from both sides. A qualitative content analysis examined 14 news articles—seven from Al Jazeera and seven from Western sources—that covered significant events during the 2023-2024 Gaza conflict. The study examined variations in how conflict-related events are portrayed, language usage, and narrative framing. The findings show essential differences in viewpoint between Al Jazeera and Western media. Al Jazeera's reporting is typically more humane and passionate, highlighting Palestinian suffering and placing blame for violence on Israeli troops; in contrast, news from Western media tends to be largely ignorant of the sufferings of the innocent Palestinians who continue to become victims of endless indiscriminate bombings. Moreover, Aljazeera local reporters are essential in influencing attitudes worldwide because they provide personal stories of the war in contrast to Western media's more detached, objective reporting style. These results emphasize the significance of comprehending media bias and viewpoint gaps in conflict reporting and draw attention to the particular contribution that local reporters make in offering a more thorough analysis of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Abstract

The aim of the study is to investigate the pros and cons of standing while working and studying. A qualitative research was employed where the data taken from education practitioners and students interested to learn and support the introduction of standing desks. The finding of the study show that students and sedentary workers now spend up to 85% of their waking hours,(+/-13.5 hrs/day), sitting viz: sitting at meals, sitting in transportation, sitting in schools or offices, sitting watching TV or looking at a handphone or an i-pad plus sitting whilst watching sport or playing computer games. Even if standing in classes became the default behaviour in all classes it could only result in a maximum of about 20 extra hours of standing per week during semesters and thus could only reduce the amount of time spent sitting by a maximum of 14% of waking hours to 71% of waking hours. The height of Standing Desks should be at the elbow height of the  person concerned ie about 1.00m for senior high school and university students and adults. For primary school students the desk height for the standing desk is about 75cm – ie. the same as the desk height for normal sitting desks for adults. The study also did a small survey of educators, 66% of whom would support the introduction of  standing desks.  Finally the study found that 72 % of the students and their teacher supported the introduction of standing desks. It is hoped that some schools and offices will take the initiative to introduce standing desks on a larger scale.
