Abstract

This research aims at investigating the use of Herringbone Graphic Organizer Strategy (HGO) to enhance students’ reading comprehension and their responses toward the application of HGO. The true experimental design was used in this research in which the population involved four classes at Private Senior High School of SukmaBangsaLhokseumawe, consisting of 86 first grade students, while two classes were selected by using cluster random sampling as samples, namely X/Volcano as an experimental class, consisting of 18 students and X/Hargowilis as a control class, consisting of 20 students. The experimental class was taught by using HGO, whereas the control class was taught by using conventional strategy. The instruments used for data collection were tests and questionnaires. The tests were given for both the experimental and control class but the questionnaire was only distributed for experimental class students. The data obtained from the tests were analyzed by using the SPSS (statistical package for the social science) version 23 and the questionnaire was analyzed by using Likert scale. The analyses results indicated that HGO is able to enhance students' reading comprehension proven by the significance value of the t-test on the identifying main idea (p = 0.003), specific detail (0,001), and inference aspect (0.001). Therefore, since the probability is Sig. 0.05, then H0 is rejected. In addition, the students responded positively (79.16%) to the application of HGO. It can be concluded that HGO could enhance reading comprehension and develop the positive responses of the students.

The study used the quantitative method with the survey design, and the questionnaire was used as the instrument to get the data needed. The population of this survey was all students who graduated from SMAN 1 Labuhanhaji, SMAN 1 Tapak Tuan, and SMAN 1 Trumon and they are now continuing their study at some universities and academies in Aceh and North Sumatera. The samples for this study were fifteen alumni chosen from each of these three state schools. The collected data was analyzed through a quantitative procedure by using a statistical formula to find the percentage of each statement. The results showed that most English teachers were perceived not to thoroughly apply the strategies suggested in English teaching but have a complete set of required personality to be a good teacher. In addition, school facilities were perceived still insufficient.

Abstract

This research aims to find out students' perception of the English subject and provides an overview of the students learning outcome at SMA Negeri 1 Jangka Buya, Pidie Jaya. The instruments used in this research are questionnaires, interview guides, and documentation. Students' perceptions are classified into three categories: education, economy, and social interaction, and one group of negative question models support the other three. The student's perception of English is dominant in education. Generally, the students of SMAN 1 Jangka Buya come from dayah (Islamic school). They believe that mastering English can help them promote Islamic teachings more effectively. The negative question is the second dominant result; most students admit that language is a medium to build up connection and communication verbally or through written text. Meanwhile, in the economy category, students believe that we can increase income with English language skills. It is also shown that students who have good grades in English also have a high perception of certain categories. In comparison, students who have low perception get low learning outcomes on the English subject. So that, the students' perception and background must be hardly noticed by the teacher in planning a good teaching and learning process.

Abstract

For English teaching practice, it is important to deliberate productive talks that spur students’ comprehension, creativity, and problem solving ability. This research aimed at finding out the spoken discourse based on six phases of macrostructure in English classrooms. The guide was developed based on Van Dijk (1980) on macrostructure in discourse society. The theory was adopted and adjusted based on the classroom spoken discourse. The data were analyzed using the interactive model analysis by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014). The steps were data condensation, data display, and data verification by using a percentage formula. The findings indicate that two teachers conducted the process of teaching and learning activities according to the lesson plans that they had previously designed. Even though both of them had different teaching strategies, but the lesson plans had a complete structure with 6 steps in macro-phases.

Abstract

This case study is aimed at finding out the types of classroom communication strategies employed by English department lecturers during their teaching. In this study, three lecturers participated (HQ, RR, and SW in pseudonyms). They were lecturers for academic English, critical speaking, and advanced reading classes. The instruments of this study were videotapes, observation guides, field notes, and interview guides. After the data collection process, the data were analyzed using coding analysis and interactive analysis. The results showed that the most employed direct strategies were circumlocution and code-switching. HQ used circumlocution 54 times and code-switching 51 times; RR used circumlocution 21 times and code-switching 32 times. The major use of indirect strategies was comprehension check, which was used 47 times by RR, 28 times by HQ, and 9 times by SW. Last, for the interactional strategy, filler was the most used strategy. RR used it 19 times, HQ used it 46 times, and SW used it 26 times. It is suggested that lecturers are expected to balance these three strategies to maintain good teacher-student communication. However, for adult learners (college students), it is found that lecturers mostly use circumlocution during the lecture.
