Abstract

Loading companies have a high accident risk because the services that they provide involve a lot cargo moving in out of cargo ships. Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOPs) are common risk management procedures that a company should follow to ensure the safety of the workers by measuring the risks and preparing strategies to control the hazards. This research aims to identify, assess and manage the occupational health and safety of the workers during loading processes in the container terminal of PT Pelindo IV (persero) in Makassar in 2019. It investigates the issue by employing descriptive quantitative method and observational approach. Observational approach allows this research to describe the stages of loading process through observations that utilize work sheet Job Safety Analysis (JSA), Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOPs) and AS/NZS 4360:2004. The research samples consist of 157 respondents who are selected using proportionate stratified random sampling technique. The research findings identify some hazards of loading process including physical, mechanical and ergonomic hazards with mechanical hazard having the highest level of hazard by 74.5% particularly in Haulage/Trucking area. The risk assessment indicates that undesirablerisks on the first, third, fourth and fifth work stages are categorized into acceptable with control on the second work stage.

Abstract

Eating habits in school children are formed from an early age and form the basis of children's nutritional intake patterns at a later age. The aim of this service is to increase school children's knowledge about balanced nutrition and children's skills in choosing balanced nutritious food through the socialization of “fill my plate” (in Indonesia: “isi piringku”). The target participants of this service activity are 50 elementary school children on Liukang Loe Island, Bulukumba Regency. The knowledge of the target group was assessed through pre and post-tests distributed before and after socialization. Pre-test and post test data were then analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. The results of data analysis showed that in the initial condition, the target group with sufficient knowledge of 44% increased to 68% in the condition after socialization. The Wilcoxon test results showed that there was a significant difference in knowledge level between before and after the target group received the "fill of my plate" socialization (p=0.004 <0.05). The target group of elementary school children was very enthusiastic in participating in the socialization and became a good alternative in increasing students' knowledge related to portion intake and food variations.

Abstract

Work in the agricultural sector heavily depends on nature and the physical environment. The risk of accidents increases due to fatigue, inadequate equipment, difficult terrain, exposure to extreme weather, and poor health, which are also associated with working and living in remote areas. This study aimed to identify the factors influencing injuries and health complaints among farmers in Bontomanai Village. This research is a quantitative study with a cross-sectional design conducted from July to October 2024 in Bontomanai Village, Gowa Regency. The respondents of this study were 315 farmers selected through purposive sampling. The independent variables were age, education level, gender, work experience, working hours, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and working posture. A total of 16.5% of respondents experienced injuries, while 55.6% reported health complaints. There was a significant relationship between gender and injuries, as well as between working hours and health complaints. Limiting working hours and empowering the community by forming "Agricultural OHS Cadres" is suggested to provide continuous knowledge about Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) in the agricultural sector. Abstract

Mbojo farmers are at high risk of suffering from Diabetes Mellitus (DM) due to hard work and a diet high in carbohydrates. However, the incidence of DM among them is relatively low thanks to the tradition of using the Nyale seaworm (Eunice sicilliensis) for prevention and treatment. This research aims to uncover these traditional practices in Parado District, West Nusa Tenggara, in 2024. The research method used is qualitative with a case study approach. The informants consisted of six people who were selected through purposive sampling. The results of the study showed that DM prevention was carried out by consuming fresh Nyale worms during mass spawning in the Nyale smell tradition. This tradition involves prayer and prayer together, followed by the taking of Nyale on the 9th day of the Hijri month. Treatment is carried out by drying, punching, and applying Nyale to the wound of DM sufferers. These findings show the potential of local traditions as a preventive measure and natural treatment. The implications include the development of DM prevention programs, increasing access to health services, occupational health education, and improving the work environment. Researchers recommend further studies to explore the benefits of Nyale worms as a candidate for diabetes drugs, while supporting the development of natural ingredients in modern medicine

Abstract

Despite growing concerns over occupational health, the improper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) among pesticide-exposed farmers remains a critical challenge, particularly in rural areas. Previous interventions often lacked sustained impact and contextual engagement. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an educational program designed to improve PPE awareness and use among farmers in Dusun Kampung Beru, Indonesia. Using a quantitative approach with the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) method, eleven local farmers participated in a structured intervention involving a pre-test, a post-test I during the second community-based learning session (PBL II), and a post-test II during PBL III conducted six months later. The findings revealed a significant increase in farmers’ knowledge, with the median score improving from 90 (pre-test) to 100 (post-test I), maintaining the same level in post-test II. The proportion of participants categorized as having adequate knowledge rose from 27.3% to 63.6% and further to 80% over the evaluation period. However, challenges in PPE usage persisted due to discomfort and equipment quality. The study highlights that while community-based educational programs can effectively enhance awareness, their long-term success depends on continued support, including the provision of comfortable PPE, local leadership involvement, and culturally sensitive strategies. This intervention model has implications for public health efforts in similar rural settings.
