Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of the Discovery Learning model and its impact on the development of students’ critical thinking and communication skills in the topic “Understanding Animal Life Cycles” for third-grade students at SD Negeri Kampung Besar. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach, collecting data through observations, interviews, and documentation. All data were systematically analyzed using NVivo software to strengthen the coding process and thematic interpretation. The findings show that Discovery Learning creates a more active and meaningful learning environment through exploration, discussion, concept discovery, and reflection. Students became more engaged in independently constructing their understanding of animal life cycle stages, resulting in better comprehension and retention. Additionally, the model enhanced students’ critical thinking skills, particularly in distinguishing types of metamorphosis and providing logical, independent reasoning. Communication skills also improved through group discussions and presentations. Overall, Discovery Learning effectively increased students’ motivation, active participation, and learning effectiveness while strengthening essential 21st-century skills in elementary school learners.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop and implement a hybrid biology learning model integrating local wisdom and digital technology to improve scientific literacy and strengthen the ecological character of elementary school students. A Design-Based Research (DBR) approach was employed, involving fifth-grade students as research subjects. Data were collected through observations, interviews, scientific literacy tests, ecological character questionnaires, and documentation. Quantitative data were analyzed using N-Gain and paired sample t-tests, while qualitative data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ scientific literacy, with average scores increasing from 55.4 to 81.7 and an N-Gain value of 0.60 (moderate category). Students’ ecological character also improved from 68.35 (fair) to 86.94 (very good). Teachers’ and students’ responses indicated that the model was practical, engaging, and easy to implement, while expert validation confirmed its validity and feasibility. Overall, the findings indicate that the proposed hybrid learning model offers an effective and innovative approach for enhancing both cognitive and affective learning outcomes in elementary science education.

Abstract

To date, no scientific studies have been conducted to determine tree species richness and carbon content in the Pasir Nunang Village Forest, Southeast Aceh Regency, Aceh Province. This study aims to determine the tree species diversity index and carbon content in the Pasir Nunang Village Forest, Southeast Aceh Regency, Aceh Province. Quantitative research then research a purposive sampling method was employed, taking into account variations in topography and slope. Research data sample at the research locations in the north and south were made into plots measuring 40 m x 40 m on the right and left of the transect in a zigzag manner without any intervals of 10 plots, resulting in a total of 20 plots at the research location. Field data collection was conducted from June 22 to July 10, 2024, within the forest area of Pasir Nunang Village, Southeast Aceh Regency. Data collection through observations was conducted on tree stands with a diameter of >20 cm, measuring the tree trunk diameter at chest height of an adult. Data analysis included the calculation of vegetation species diversity index (Shannon–Wiener, H’) and carbon storage was analyzed using allometric equations. The results identified a total of 28 tree species belonging to 16 families, comprising 162 individual trees.The Shannon–Wiener diversity index (H’) reached a maximum value of 3.12. The estimated total aboveground carbon stock in the Pasir Nunang Village Forest was 354.23 tons ha⁻¹.

Abstract

Gastrointestinal nematodes are a type of parasitic worm that is found in the digestive tract of humans and animals and can live in all areas, including fresh water, sea and land with a supportive environment. This research was to look at the percentage of gastrointestinal nematode infestation in cattle in Bireuen Regency as a lowland area from various levels of age groups and gender. The research samples were feces from 120 cattle divided into 3 age groups (0-6 months, 7-12 months, >12 months) and 2 genders(female and male). The examination was carried out using the centrifuge method. Samples are declared positive if gastrointestinal nematode eggs are found and the percentage is calculated using the prevalence formula and looking at differences in infestation levels analyzed using the chi-square formula. The research results showed that in the age group 0-7 months it was 35%, 7-12 months it was 22.5% and >12 months it was 15%. Between age groups the presence of these worms showed significant differences (P<0.05). Meanwhile, based on gender, female cows have a higher infestation, namely 23.9% compared to 15.2% for male cattle and there is a significant difference (P<0.05).

Abstract

This study examines the effect of multiplication pocket media on conceptual understanding and critical thinking skills of third-grade students in elementary school mathematics learning. Mathematics learning at the elementary school level often faces challenges due to the abstract nature of mathematical concepts, particularly multiplication, which is less compatible with students’ cognitive development at the concrete operational stage. This study employed a quantitative approach using a one-group pretest–posttest pre-experimental design involving 30 third-grade students at SD Negeri 10 Silih Nara. Data were collected through validated and reliable essay-based tests designed to measure conceptual understanding and critical thinking skills. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ learning outcomes, with the mean score increasing from 63.00 in the pretest to 87.33 in the posttest. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test indicated a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores (Sig. = 0.000 < 0.05). Furthermore, the N-Gain score of 0.738 was categorized as high, indicating that the multiplication pocket media effectively improves students’ learning outcomes. These findings suggest that the use of concrete and manipulative learning media can enhance students’ conceptual understanding and critical thinking skills in elementary mathematics learning.

Abstract

Inventarisasi Serangga Pada Tanaman Kacang Pajang (Vigna sinensis) di Area Perkebunan Desa Lawe pakam Kecamatan Babul Makmur. Penentuan lokasi pengamatan digunakan dengan metode“Purpossive Sampling”,Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui spesies serangga terdapat pada tanaman kacang panjang.Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode observasi pada tanaman kacang panjang dan untuk mengetahui spesies serangga yang dominan. Pengambilan sampel menggunakan jaring penangkap serangga.Tamanan yang diamati adalah pada bagian batang, daun, bunga, buah, biji dan akar. Spesies serangga yang ditemukan akan dimasukkan pada wadah yang telah disediakan. Spesies serangga yang terdapat pada tanaman kacang panjang akan diberi alkohol 70% dan dibawah ke Laboratorium Pendidikan Biologi Universitas Gunung Leuser untuk diklasifikasi dan diidentifikasi. Data penelitian disajikan dalam bentuk tabel dan gambar / foto, didapatkan 13 spesies serangga dan 13 famili semua termasuk kedalam kelas insekta. Spesies serangga yang ditemukan pada tanaman kacang panjang yaitu, Popilio polytes, Sexaya coriacae, Appias libythea, Dolichoderus,Musca vigna sinensis, neurothemis sp, Blaberus giganteus,Formica rufa, Dasynus piperis, Plusia sp,Sarcoptes scobei, Aphismaidis dan Handeuleum doleschalia. Spesies serangga yang dominan ditemukan adalah Dolichoderus dan Aphismaidis. Kata kunci: Inventarisasi, Serangga, Vigna sinensis

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between the Christmas tree worm (Spirobranchus sp.) and coral health in tropical reef ecosystems. Field observations and statistical analyses were conducted to evaluate worm abundance and its association with coral condition. The results showed a strong association (Phi coefficient = 0.79) between high worm density and degraded coral health. Juvenile Spirobranchus sp. preferentially settle on healthy coral substrates, while adult individuals may contribute to surface abrasion and localized lesions through opercular movement. Exposed worm tubes can facilitate turf algae colonization, inhibiting coral recovery. Environmental parameters, including temperature, pH, salinity, visibility, and current velocity, influence coral condition and worm distribution. Elevated and localized temperature anomalies and reduced water flow were associated with increased coral stress and algal growth. These findings indicate that Spirobranchus sp. may contribute to coral degradation under high population density. This study supports Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water) by highlighting the potential of Spirobranchus sp. density as a practical indicator for coral reef monitoring and conservation.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the learning of style material in grade IV of Alur Selalas Public Elementary School which is still conventional, causing students' critical thinking and collaborative skills to not develop optimally. The purpose of this research is to analyze the effect of Problem Based Learning (PBL) on critical thinking and collaborative thinking skills, and to describe students' responses. The method used is an experiment with a One Group Pretest-Posttest Design. The research sample consisted of 20 grade IV students. Data were collected through critical thinking tests, collaborative skills observations, and student response questionnaires. The results showed that the application of the PBL model had a positive and significant effect. There was an average increase in critical thinking skills of 16.40 points (from 70.40 to 86.80). Collaborative skills also increased by 21.56 points (from 74.38 to 95.94). The increase in both skills occurred simultaneously, supported by contextual problem-solving activities in groups that stimulate analysis and collaboration. In addition, students gave a very positive response to learning with the PBL model, which was indicated by increased active involvement, conceptual understanding, a sense of togetherness, and self-confidence. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the PBL model is effective in improving critical and collaborative thinking skills and has received a positive response from fourth-grade elementary school students on the topic of force. This model can be used as an alternative learning method to develop 21st-century competencies.
