Abstract

Deficiency in energy and nutrient intake in athletes can disrupt physiological functions, hinder muscle growth, cause fatigue and illness, and result in suboptimal performance. It is crucial for athletes to carefully manage their food intake during training, competition, and recovery, while also considering eating behaviors that include perception, knowledge, and habits related to food selection and consumption. This study aims to identify the factors influencing eating behaviors in non-elite athletes with a history of macro-nutrient intake deficits in the UNESA Basketball UKM. The research employs a qualitative methodology. Data were collected from key and supporting informants selected based on inclusion criteria established by the researcher. The number of research informants was determined based on the information obtained which was deemed to have reached saturation point, resulting in 7 key informants and 8 supporting informants. The collected data were analyzed through transcription and then categorized into relevant codes and themes. The findings of this study identified two main themes influencing the eating behaviors of non-elite athletes in the UNESA Basketball UKM: internal and external factors. Internal factors, including food preferences, self-discipline, self-confidence, state of mind, gastrointestinal discomfort, body image, sleep time, past eating habits, physical activity level, nutritional knowledge, and food allergies. Meanwhile, external factors include social influence, food availability, food prices, and social media.

Abstract

Background: The increasing prevalence of obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetS) among teachers necessitates targeted interventions to enhance health outcomes. Nutritionist-led counseling can enhance health self-efficacy by equipping individuals with knowledge, skill, and confidence to have healthier lifestyles. Objective: The study aims to assess whether a single face-to-face counseling intervention can significantly improve self-efficacy among teachers. Methods: This experimental study employed a pre-and-post-test design involving 23 high-school vocational teachers (14 females and 9 males) who participated in a one-day, three-hour counseling session by trained nutritionists. Participants underwent anthropometric measurements and MetS risk screening before the intervention. Self-efficacy was assessed using a validated questionnaire before and after counseling. Statistical analyses were conducted using paired t-tests and chi-square or Fisher's Exact tests. Results: The findings indicated a significant increase in self-efficacy scores from a baseline mean of 26±2 to 28±2 after the intervention (p<0.001). Notably, the proportion of teachers who reported confidence in selecting appropriate foods significantly improved (p=0.02). The prevalence of obesity among participants was high, with 57% categorized as obese based on BMI.Conclusion: Targeted nutrition counseling can effectively enhance self-efficacy among teachers, potentially leading to healthier lifestyle confidence and reduced MetS risk. This study underscores the importance of incorporating nutritionist-led interventions in educational settings to promote health among teachers, who serve as role models for students.

Abstract

The menstrual cycle is a crucial thing for women. Irregular menstrual cycles can interfere their mental, physical, and even social lives. Disorders of the menstrual cycle are closely related to several factors, including intake of macronutrients and physical activity. The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation between levels of consumption of macronutrients and physical activity with the menstrual cycle. It was a cross-sectional study with 75 female students of the Nutrition Departement at State University of Surabaya who were taken with non-probability sampling. SQ-FFQ were used to estimate dietary intake of macronutrient, physical activity level were measured by using IPAQ-SF questionnaire, and menstrual cycle data were recorded using the menstrual cycle form using the self-record method. The correlation test between the level of consumption of macronutrients and physical activity with the menstrual cycle are using the Spearman test. The level of consumption of carbohydrates and fats in the majority of respondents respectively 41.3% and 44% according to the daily needs of the respondents. The level of physical activity of the majority of respondents in the moderate category was 58.7%. A total of 52 respondents (69.3%) experienced normal menstrual cycles and this was significantly related to carbohydrate intake (p=0.001; r=0,4), fat intake (p=0.001; r=0,4), and physical activity (p=0.005; r=0,4). Meanwhile, 50.7% of respondents with a high level of protein consumption did not have a significant relationship with the menstrual cycle (p=0.289; -0,1). It was concluded that there was a significant relation between the level of consumption of carbohydrates, fats, and physical activity with the menstrual cycle. Conversely there is no correlation between the level of protein consumption and the menstrual cycle.
