Abstract

This research is conducted because of Covid-19 that has been going on for almost 2 years and it affect to the teaching learning process at SMA Negeri 1 Siborongborong. The objective of research is to know and describe challenges and strategies faced by English teacher in online learning (OL) as long as pandemic. In this research, the research used qualitative research. The source of data came from 3 English teachers at SMA Negeri 1 Siborongborong. The technique that used to collect data by using questionnaire. The data was analysed by using Miles and Huberman model. Three stages were used in analysing data, namely data reduction, displaying data and drawing conclusion/verification. The result of the research showed that teachers’ undergone several challenges at SMA Negeri 1 Siborongborong, namely; (1) uneven network, (2) limited facility, (3) student learning lost, (4) Students were not so serious to the lesson and (5) willing to explain the explanation two or three times. whereas, teacher’s strategies were used English teacher in SMA Negeri 1 Siborongborong during OL were; (1) Teacher did not force the students to have too much (2) Limiting the material and homework (3) motivating and supporting the students (4) Inviting student to joke so they don’t get bored right away (5) Trying to present interesting learning process for students. So, it can be concluded that network affects to the students’ ability in understanding the material in the classroom.

Abstract

This study was aimed to observe the use of Shadowing technique to improve students’ ability in listening comprehension. This research was conducted by using classroom action research which is consist of two cycles. The sample of the research was one group out of four groups of the first semester students’ of English Department of Nommensen KHBP university which was selected by using random sampling technique. Listening test, observation sheets and diary notes were employed to collect the data. Quantitatively, it showed that there were an improvement of listening ability from the students since the first up to the last treatments. The result showed that in the first treatment there is no students who got the point up to 75. But it increased to 37.5% in the end of the second treatment and 94.28% in the end of the last treatment. Qualitatively, the result showed that the students felt better, easier, and interesting to learn listening that leading to the acquirement of more successful listening comprehension skill. Therefore, shadowing technique could be used to improve students’ ability in listening comprehension. Keywords: Listening comprehension, shadowing technique

Abstract

This research aims to investigate students' anxiety in Speaking English at Second Semester Students of English Deparment in Nommensen HKBP University Medan. The objectives of this research are (1) to identify the factors or situations that make the students’ feel anxious when they are speak English and (2) to find out and describe the strategies to minimize anxiety for the student.The researcher used descriptive qualitative method, with phenomenology approach. The participants in this research were 25 students in 1 class. The instrument of the collecting data interview and questionnaire. Both of them were conducted online. The researcher gave several questions and questionnaires to be answered by students via Google Forms, and from the students' answers, the researcher saw that the students felt uncomfortable when speaking English, so that from this discomfort, a feeling of anxiety arose when they spoke English. The result of the research showed in two factors, they are internal factors (shyness, lack of self -confident, and fear of making mistakes, and the external factors (lack of preparation, limited vocabulary, and friends/classmates). And there were five strategies to minimize anxiety when speaking english showed in this research (preparation, relaxation, positive thinking, concentration and peer seeking).

Abstract

This study aims to determine the Impoliteness Strategies of the Hate Comments on Twitter. This study was compiled using a qualitative descriptive research method. Data from hate comments made by netizens in response to the post of the son of the Indonesian president in the comments column of the official Twitter account belonging to Gibran Rakabuming Raka and data Sources from the official Twitter account of the vice presidential candidate. The number of data in this study is 50 data. The Instrument of Collecting Data uses Observation and Documentation and the method of collecting data uses searching, reading, choosing, capturing, and printing. The data was analyzed using the Formula P=F/N x100. From the research that has been done, it was found that there is a difference in the percentage between the five types of impoliteness strategies. In the bald on record, type 4 hate comment data were found with a percentage of 8%, positive impoliteness is 6 hate comment data with a percentage of 12%, negative impoliteness is 6 hate comment data with a percentage of 12%, sarcasm or mock impoliteness is 34 hate comment data with a percentage of 68%, and withhold impoliteness is 0 hate comment data with a percentage of 0%. So, it can be concluded that the most dominant type the impoliteness strategies in the results is sarcasm or mock impoliteness with a percentage of 68% in the thesis title Impoliteness Strategies of the Hate Comments on Twitter.

Abstract

Improving students' speaking skills is important in the language learning process. This study aims to determine the correlation between speaking anxiety and speaking performance in students and determine what speaking anxiety factors affect students' speaking performance in the second grade of SMA Negeri 1 Sipahutar. The research method used is quantitative. data was collected through speaking tests, questionnaires, and interviews. The result of the data analysis shows the result on correlation coefficient (r = 0.394) which is defined as a positive relationship between anxiety and speaking performance, defined that there is a positive relationship between speaking anxiety and speaking performance and the factors that influence speaking anxiety and students' speaking performance is the Trait Anxiety factor. The hypothesis test states that there is a significant relationship between speaking anxiety and students' speaking performance and the hypothesis test states that there is a significant relationship between speaking anxiety and student performance.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui persepsi guru dan siswa mengenai penggunaan portofolio untuk menilai kemajuan mereka dalam menulis teks recount. Dalam penelitian ini teknik pengumpulan data peneliti menggunakan metode kuesioner dan wawancara yang terdiri dari lima belas pernyataan tentang persepsi portofolio untuk menilai kemajuan dalam menulis teks recount. Sumber data dalam penelitian ini diambil oleh ketiga guru dan dua puluh lima siswa di SMP HKBP Sidorame. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain deskriptif kualitatif. Teknik analisis data menggunakan empat langkah, yaitu oleh peneliti sendiri. Temuan dari analisis data, guru memberikan persepsi positif terhadap portofolio untuk menilai kemajuan menulis teks recount. Proses menulis teks recount lebih mudah dengan menggunakan penilaian portofolio. Siswa juga memberikan persepsi positif terhadap portofolio untuk menilai kemajuan dalam menulis teks recount, proses menulis teks recount lebih mudah dengan penggunaan portofolio dan penggunaan portofolio dapat membuat siswa mengetahui kemajuannya dalam menulis teks recount dengan struktur generik teks recount dengan baik.

Abstract

Kemampuan Membaca adalah pemahaman terhadap kata-kata tertulis, pemahaman terhadap isi yang dibaca, dan konstruksi makna tekstual. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah pemahaman membaca siswa dapat ditingkatkan setelah diajar dengan strategi pembelajaran kolaboratif. Desain penelitian pada penelitian ini adalah penelitian tindakan kelas. Data diambil dari tes membaca siswa pada teks deskriptif, observasi, dokumentasi, dan lembar angket. Populasi penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa kelas XII SMA Swasta HKBP Sidorame Medan yang mempunyai dua kelas dengan jumlah siswa yang sama di setiap kelasnya. Pada kelas VII, siswa SMA Swasta HKBP Sidorame Medan berjumlah 30 orang. Penulis mengambil sampel kedua kelas yang berjumlah 30 siswa. Data menunjukkan bahwa, masih banyak siswa kelas dua belas yang mengalami kesulitan dalam kemampuan membaca. Data dalam penelitian ini dikumpulkan dari sumber kualitatif dan kuantitatif. Lembar observasi, dokumentasi, dan lembar angket digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data kualitatif. Data kuantitatif berasal dari pre-test, siklus I, dan siklus II berupa tes pemahaman membaca. Total nilai siswa pada setiap tes adalah sebagai berikut: pada pre-test 64,53, pada post-test siklus I 83 ,41, dan pada post-test siklus II 96,6. Berdasarkan nilai siswa pada setiap tes, penulis menemukan bahwa rata-rata nilai siswa pada setiap siklus meningkat dari 59%, 68,8%, menjadi 80,4%. Setelah menggunakan pembelajaran kolaboratif dalam mengajar kemampuan membaca, penulis menemukan bahwa nilai rata-rata siswa pada post-test II berada di atas KKM. Artinya penerapan strategi pembelajaran kolaboratif memang dapat membantu mengatasi permasalahan dan meningkatkan skor kemampuan membaca siswa.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the dramatic element concepts of Tonggo Raja, Indonesia’s traditional music festival, which was officially released by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology in 2021. It is interesting to investigate performance in traditional musical drama. In this research, the writer applied a descriptive qualitative design with the concept of a dramaturgy approach. The data was collected by watching the YouTube video, interviewing the composer, and transcribing the data. Then, the data are classified into the types of elements they belong to. After obtaining the results of the analysis, they are displayed in a table with description and narration. The results showed that not all ten drama elements of are contained in the performance, including character and conflict. Even though not all the elements were found in the plays, Tonggo Raja has its characteristics, forms, and concepts according to the culture in which it exists. Tonggo Raja is not tied to a particular structure or element, nor does it follow the standard dramaturgical concepts. but the set of activities in the performance form the performance’s elements.

Abstract

Memasuki era globalisasi dan informasi, bangsa Indonesia dituntut mampu bersaing dengan bangsa-bangsa lain dalam berbagai bidang kehidupan. Dalam era tersebut, penguasaan ilmu pengetahuan dan teknologi menjadi suatu keharusan karena dapat menentukan kemampuan suatu bangsa untuk menang dalam persaingan. Keterkaitan global antar bangsa pada masa itu, juga menempatkan bahasa asing pada posisi yang sangat strategis. Bahasa Inggris merupakan salah satu bahasa internasional yang paling umum digunakan dan sangat popular, maka dapat disebut sebagai media komunikasi global. Bahasa ini telah menjadi bahasa internasional secara alamiah seiring dengan kemajuan negara-negara Eropa dan Amerika Serikat.
