Abstract

This study aims to explore the effect of using Virtual Reality (VR) technology in improving pronunciation and fluency in learning English as a foreign language (EFL). By offering an immersive and interactive learning environment, VR allows learners to practice speaking skills in situations that mimic real-world conversations, potentially reducing anxiety and increasing confidence. This study identifies the role of VR in facilitating repeated exposure to accurate pronunciation models and assisting in the development of speaking fluency through interactive simulation. The results of the study indicate that the use of VR can improve learners' pronunciation and fluency, especially by providing immediate feedback and the opportunity to practice in a non-stressful environment. However, although VR shows positive results, its effectiveness in the long term and in a more realistic classroom context still requires further research. This study also highlights the need for more in-depth studies on the comparison between training using VR and traditional methods, as well as the influence of individual factors such as anxiety and previous pronunciation training on learning outcomes.

Abstract

This community service discusses improving children's reading literacy through the establishment of a mini library and reading activities in Lau Gumba village, Berastagi sub-district, Karo district. Reading literacy is a form of ability to obtain, understand and use information from various sources in digital form. Reading literacy is not only related to knowledge and skills but also related to motivation, attitude, and behavior. This literacy itself in the context of education plays a role in developing a person's knowledge of certain subject matter and encouraging curiosity and developing creativity. To encourage children's reading literacy, a mini library was established that makes it easier for children to access the window of the world. The mini library facilitates learning and literacy activities. The provision of reading books should be efficient, meaning that it is appropriate to age and genre so that it meets the needs of readers. An interesting collection of educational reading books will increase children's interest in reading so that they want to visit the mini library continuously.

Abstract

Teachers are trained in senior high schools to increase their competence in designing and implementing CAR in the classes they teach. Seven students and eight teachers from SMAN 2 Panyabungan made up the training participants for this course. On the first day, CAR planning was stressed, and on the second day, CAR implementation was detailed. The community service was conducted by 8 lecturers of Universitas HKBP Nommensen Medan, on March 5-6, 2021. The results show that teachers' understanding of the CAR cycle had increased, however they required additional training to improve their ability to collect data and do data analysis techniques.

Abstract

This study analyses students' grammatical errors in writing recount texts among tenth-grade students at SMK Swasta Jambi Medan. Writing is an important skill in English that requires the use of proper grammar to convey ideas effectively. However, many students have difficulties with grammatical structures, which affect the clarity and coherence of their writing. This study aims to identify and classify the types of grammatical errors found in students' recount texts and determine the most dominant types of errors. This study used a qualitative descriptive method, with data collected from students' writing test. Errors were analyzed using Dulay's Taxonomy of Surface Strategies, which categorizes errors into omission, addition, misformation errors, and misordering errors. The findings showed that misformation errors were the most frequent (76.59%), followed by addition errors (14.89%), omission errors (8.51%), and misordering errors (0%). The prevalence of tense errors shows that students struggle mainly with the use of verb tenses, irregular verb tenses, and subject-descriptor congruence. The results of this study highlight the need for improved grammar teaching, especially in verb and sentence structure. Teachers should focus on strengthening grammar rules through targeted practice, while curriculum developers can use these findings to design more effective English writing programs.  By addressing these common errors, students can improve their writing accuracy and overall language proficiency.

Abstract

This research investigated the effect of using the Anagram Game on students' vocabulary achievement in tenth grade at SMK Swasta Karya Jaya, addressing the identified problem of low vocabulary mastery that hinders their overall English language proficiency. Preliminary research indicated that out of 20 students, only 4 reached the minimum passing grade of 75, highlighting the need for effective vocabulary instruction strategies. The objective of this study was to determine whether the Anagram Game significantly affects students' vocabulary acquisition, specifically in nouns, verbs, and adjectives, which are foundational for English communication.Employing a quantitative research design with a pre-test and post-test control group, the study involved 40 tenth-grade students at SMK Swasta Karya Jaya, divided into an experimental group (Anagram Game) and a control group (conventional teaching). The experimental group's pre-test mean score was 72.4, and the post-test mean score was 83.45. The control group's pre-test mean score was 74.8, and the post-test mean score was 79.15. Before the independent samples t-test, data were analyzed using SPSS version 25 to ensure normality and homogeneity. The results of the data analysis indicated that the data were normally distributed and homogeneous. The independent samples t-test revealed a statistically significant difference in vocabulary achievement between the two groups (t-count = 2.108, df = 38, p < 0.05, t-table = 2.024), indicating that the Anagram Game had a positive effect on students' vocabulary acquisition. It is recommended that future research further explore different methods of the game in comparison with Anagram Game. This study provides empirical evidence supporting the use of game-based learning strategies for vocabulary instruction in senior high school settings.

Abstract

TOBA BATAK LANGUAGE WORD ORDER PROTOTYPE (PIVOT SYSTEM OF CLAUSE BASIC ORDER). ABSTRACT: This prototype research on the word order of the Toba Batak Language (BBT) aims to describe the characteristics of the word order and pivot system of BBT and interpret BBT typology based on the characteristics of the clause syntax. The data were analyzed using the distribution method with substitution and transformation techniques. Pivot testing is carried out on the construction of coordinative and subordinate clauses. The pivot test results show that the VOS word order pattern is a common prototype in BBT. Typological analysis of the data shows the conclusion of this study is that BBT is classified into the accusative language group syntactically. This is reflected through S which is treated the same as A, and there is a different treatment for P. Furthermore, the pivot test shows that FN in BBT can be eliminated directly if the FN is in the S or A function. Conversely, if FN is in the P function, the dissolution can't be done directly. Omitting can be done passively or by topicalizing one of the clauses first. From the results of the pattern produced above, it can be concluded that BBT is a language with an accusative typology with reference to the S/A pivot system.KEYWORDS: Word Order; Clause; Pivot System; Toba Batal Language.
