Abstract

The objectives of this research is to to find out why students are not confident in speaking English even though they have a lot of vocabulary at Smpn 35 Makassar. This research used qualitative method. This research was conducted in three stages, namely observation, questionnaire and interview test. The samples of this study were students of class VIII-4, namely 25 students as respondents and an English teacher of class VIII-4. Data collection used observation, questionnaire and interview test. The result of this study is that the amount of vocabulary that students have does not guarantee that a student is confident in speaking English. this is caused by shyness, fear of being wrong and the influence of the environment, where the environment is very influential in building students' confidence to speak. Based on the results of research conducted in class VIII-4 SMPN 45 Makassar, based on the results of the questionnaire, there are 15 students who feel embarrassed if they make mistakes and 10 students who do not feel embarrassed if they make mistakes in speaking English.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to improve students’ writing skill by using Pie (Point, Illustration, Explanation) Strategy in narrative text for eight grade Students’ of SMPN 8 Makassar in the Academic year 2022/2023. The research used the pre-experiment with pre-test and post-test research.The total population of the research was the eight grade Students of which consist of 36 Students. Than, the data had been collecting by using writing test which was applied in pre-test and post-test. The process of the research was applied four times. The research was conducted by giving treatment and succeeded in improving Students’ writing skill in several aspect, namely content, organization, vocabulary, grammar, and mechanic.The treatment was carried out using PIE Strategy in narrative text. After conducting the research then the data were analyzed using test analysis on SPSS 16. The result of the average writing skill score on pre-test and post- test was 47.61. After the reserarcher gave treatment using Pie Strategy, it turned out that the score of student writing skill in narrative text in the post-test increased to 79.03 . Therefore, the researcher concludes that writing skill in narrative text using PIE strategy can improve the writing narrative text ability of class VIII.9 Students’ at SMPN 8 Makassar.Keywords: Writing, skill, Narrative,text, PIE (Point, Illustration, Explanation)

Abstract

Perubahan transformasi pendidikan berlangsung sangat fantastis melalui integrasi teknologi dalam dunia pendidikan. Kemajuan teknologi dan komunikasi yang begitu pesat memberikan dampak besar bagi kehidupan manusia. Kemajuan teknologi informasi yang begitu pesat di era merdeka belajar seperti sekarang ini adalah penggunaan Cloud Storage seperti Google Drive. Google Drive merupakan sebuah layanan yang ditawarkan Google yang menyediakan ruang penyimpanan hingga 15GB secara gratis. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan melalui tiga tahapan yakni tahap perencanaan, tahap pelaksanaan kegiatan, dan tahap evaluasi. Beberapa manfaat dari penggunaan Google Drive ini antara lain: tempat penyimpanan atau basis data, menerjemahkan file, mengedit file bersama, melakukan back up file, mengkonfersi file Pdf menjadi teks, menyimpak link dan history, back up chat WhatsApp, serta melakukan update progress secara berkala pada tugas atau proyek yang sedang kita kerjakan. Dari kegiatan pelatihan ini diperoleh bahwa seluruh peserta kegiatan dapat memahami penggunaan oprimalisasi Google Drive sebagai basis data. Melalui kegiatan penggunaan Google Drive sebagai basis data di era 5.0 diperoleh manfaat secara efektif, praktis, efisien, dan optimal dalam kehidupan sehari-hari sebab data dapat diakses dimanapun dan kapanpun.

Abstract

Reading is an important macro skill besides speaking, writing and listening. Reading is a receptive skill, yet it is still essential for success in both academic and in everyday life. Therefore, the study aims at analyzing chemical engineering students’ needs for instructional reading strategies to help them comprehend the text. A qualitative research design was used for this study with quantitative data collection. Data were collected through questionnaires from 60 chemical engineering students and analyzed using descriptive statistics (the interpretations of percentages). The results show that there are seven important reading instructions selected by chemical engineering students (above 90%) that is drawing conclusion, making prediction, identifying cause and effect, distinguishing between facts and opinions, comparing and contrast, identifying the main ideas and identifying supporting details. Chemical engineering students also had favorable attitudes on three other instructional reading strategies that were considered important with the percentage of below 89 percent they are recognizing and interpreting writer’s view, summarizing and drawing conclusions. Based on the analysis of students’ needs, majority of chemical engineering students believe the seven most important instructional reading strategies should be incorporated into the reading materials as reading comprehension activities.

Abstract

Technology in the learning process can assist in providing teaching materials to students, making it easier for students, teachers, and parents to react whenever and wherever they are; facilitate and assist in the preparation of materials sourced from the internet; as well as assist in simulating, visualizing the learning process in a structured, processed, and scientific manner. This research analyzed the student's need to develop the mobile application. This research used the steps in the combined research and development (RD) and analysis, design, develop, implement, and evaluate (ADDIE) models. The study was conducted in Makassar, and the research subject was the students at Junior High School, with 100 randomly selected participants. The data were analyzed descriptively using interviews, observations, and participant questionnaires. The result showed that students need applications containing material that is easier to understand, using audio or video using Indonesian speakers, and interactive exercises so the students can improve their speaking skills. Based on the results of the questionnaire, the researcher synergized the school's existing curriculum with the needs analysis (N.A.) carried out by the researcher so that the results of this study would benefit the English as a foreign language (EFL) young learners, teachers, and stakeholders.

Abstract

Indonesia seems to face the crisis of local language, especially in urbanization. The emergence of English as a lingua franca is undeniable to decrease the existence of vernaculars. The research aims to reveal the reason for urbanization giving the biggest impact on the Indonesian’s local language in South Sulawesi and how to maintain the use of local language is facing extinction in this century. This study applied a descriptive qualitative design by interviewing three subjects. They are lecturers and students. The interview result showed that globalization is one of the plagues that had the impact on vernaculars becoming threatened in this present day, influenced people to obey their vernaculars, and also affected the youths’ psychological order and their perception. It is due to the significant use of international or national language and the less effort from the government in maintaining the vernaculars, particularly in South Sulawesi. One suggestion can be proposed that local content needs to be involved in the Education sector e.g., intensifying vernacular use in school and family, and sustainably promoting cultural heritage to attract the society.

Abstract

Gemini AI-based learning design training at SD Inpres Monginsidi Makassar City aims to improve teachers' competence in utilising artificial intelligence (AI) technology to create more innovative, adaptive, and effective learning. The training was attended by 30 teachers who were given materials on the introduction of Gemini AI, how to use the platform to design learning that suits students' needs, as well as hands-on practice in designing and implementing technology-based lesson plans. The Gemini AI-based learning design training at SD Inpres Monginsidi used a participatory and collaborative approach. The training method also applied in the service programme consists of several stages designed to maximise teachers' understanding and skills in using Gemini AI technology. The results of the training showed an increase in teachers' ability to design digital learning that is more interactive and personalised. Despite challenges in terms of infrastructure and mental readiness, the training succeeded in expanding teachers' understanding of artificial intelligence technology and its use in education. Thus, the results of this training contribute significantly to strengthening teachers' competencies and improving the quality of learning in primary schools.

Abstract

Abstrak. Kemajuan teknologi digital menuntut pendidik untuk mengintegrasikan media digital dalam pembelajaran. Salah satu platform yang mendukung pembelajaran interaktif adalah Canva, aplikasi desain daring yang memungkinkan penyusunan materi ajar secara visual dan menarik. Penelitian ini menggambarkan pelaksanaan dan dampak pelatihan penggunaan Canva yang dilaksanakan oleh tim Kampus Mengajar Angkatan 8 di SMP Negeri 2 Bajeng Barat, sebagai bagian dari pengabdian kepada masyarakat untuk meningkatkan kompetensi guru. Pelatihan dirancang secara kontekstual sesuai tantangan wilayah semi-urban, seperti keterbatasan teknologi dan literasi digital. Menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif, pelatihan melibatkan observasi, praktik, dan evaluasi. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa mayoritas guru sebelumnya belum mengenal Canva dan masih mengandalkan metode ceramah. Namun, setelah pelatihan dua hari, sebagian besar peserta berhasil membuat media ajar visual seperti poster, presentasi, dan kuis interaktif. Media ini terbukti meningkatkan partisipasi dan pemahaman siswa, serta menumbuhkan rasa percaya diri guru dalam pemanfaatan teknologi. Pelatihan ini juga memicu terbentuknya komunitas berbagi antar guru, menunjukkan potensi Canva sebagai sarana pengembangan profesional berkelanjutan.

Abstract

The primary objective of this research are to investigate the types of speech act used and produced through utterances in teaching process by lecturer in the class, and also need to know the influences of speech acts on students learning. The subject’s research goes to the lecturer and the English students at English department of Education Study Program of universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar. The data collected and analyzed through descriptive qualitative approach. The finding analyzed and displayed qualitatively. The findings showed up only two types of speech act used by lecturer namely; Locutionary act (expressive, directive) and Illocutionary act (assertive, directives, commisives, and expressives . Those are utterances used to function be a statement, command, asking question, and direction. Perlocutionary act itself showed up by students through their responding. The responses from students appeared in verbal by sentence, nonverbal by gestures, and any students gave responses both of them. Students claimed of The impact of the lecturers’ utterances on students’ Learning explained clearly namely can help the students to improve their understanding of implementation language competence, can increase their motivation in learning Pragmatic in English, enhance students to understanding speech act in term pragmatic in their communication, encourage them to imitate and practice speech act in appropriate way in communication and interaction both in the class and beyond the class. Hence, the use of speech act appropriately in teaching truly gave positive effect on communicative language teaching practices.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of using Fondi application on students’ speaking skill at SMP Kemala Bhayangkari Makassar. The focus is on understanding how digital tools can influence language acquisition in a classroom setting. This research employed a quantitative method with a pre-test and post-test design. The subject of this study consist of 33 eight-grade students, whose speaking skill were assessed before and after using the Fondi application over a specified period. The results indicate a significant improvement in students’ speaking skill, with the average of pre-test score increasing from 48.18 to 82.42 in the post-test. These findings suggest taht the Fondi application is effective in enhancing students’ speaking skill and creating a more supportive learning environment.
