Abstract

This study evaluated the individual and interactive effects of graded levels of catfish aquaculture wastewater and graded rates of nitrogen phosphorus potassium fertilizer on the growth and yield of tomato under tropical field conditions. Using a two‐factorial randomized complete block design, treatments included five volumes of wastewater and three fertilizer rates, each replicated three times. Growth parameters were assessed at multiple intervals, and fruit yield and biomass were recorded through successive harvests. The highest fertilizer rate resulted in the most vigorous early canopy development, greatest fruit weight in the initial harvests, and highest shoot biomass at maturity. Catfish wastewater alone did not enhance any measured parameter, but a modest wastewater addition combined with full fertilizer rate produced a notable improvement in early leaf expansion. These findings confirm the essential role of balanced inorganic nutrition in tomato production and identify a narrow window in which low‐level organic input can complement chemical fertilizer. Practical implications include the potential for smallholder farmers to valorize aquaculture by‐products and reduce synthetic input without compromising performance.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to develop and evaluate strategies for the utilisation of nano technology-based ablution water waste in integrated farming systems comprising catfish, tilapia, gourami, iridescent shark, and water spinach. Utilising an interdisciplinary approach, this study not only examines the effectiveness of water treatment technology, but also seeks to empower pesantren human resources to achieve technical and economic independence. The novelty of this research lies in the integration of nanotechnology-based water treatment technology, the utilisation of the results for productive cultivation, and the empowerment of human resources in the Islamic boarding school community. This research was conducted at the As-Salafiyyah Asy-Syafi'iyyah Tambakberas Barat Islamic Boarding School, Jombang, East Java, from August to October 2025. The findings of the study demonstrate that the integration of electrocoagulation, zeolite-based nanofiltration, and ozonation technologies is efficacious in enhancing the quality of ablution wastewater. This assertion is substantiated by a substantial decline in pollutant parameters, specifically: The BOD decreased from 78 mg/L to 24 mg/L, with an efficiency of 69.2%, the COD decreased from 39 mg/L to 17 mg/L, with an efficiency of 56.4%, and the TSS decreased from 76 mg/L to 25 mg/L, with an efficiency of 67.1%. The utilisation of treated water as a cultivation medium yielded favourable outcomes, manifesting in the accelerated growth of water spinach plants. A notable augmentation in plant length was observed, escalating from 10.2 centimetres at seven days post-planting to 39.8 centimetres at 28 days after planting. Concurrently, the number of leaves increased from 9 at 7 days after planting to 38 leaves at 28 days after planting. Furthermore, the fresh weight of the plants exhibited a substantial increase, rising from 3 grams at seven days after planting to 37 grams at 28 days after planting. Furthermore, treated water has been demonstrated to support the growth of various fish species, including patin, tilapia, gurami, and catfish. The fastest growth was exhibited by tilapia and catfish, reaching 27 g and 18 g at 28 days after planting, respectively, with a final length of 14.83 cm and 13.25 cm, respectively. The present study will examine the level of technology acceptance among Islamic boarding schools. Keywords: Nanotechnology, Ablution Wastewater, Aquaculture, Hydroponics, Islamic Boarding School

Abstract

Green spinach (Amaranthus hybridus L.) is a high-value leafy vegetable commodity that requires optimal nutrient availability from the early stages of growth. Utilizing vegetable waste as liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) with EM4 and molasses bioactivators serves as an alternative solution for sustainable cultivation.  This study aimed to analyze the physical characteristics of vegetable waste LOF under various EM4 and molasses concentrations, and to evaluate the effect of its application dosage on the vegetative growth and physiological components of green spinach. The research was conducted from February to June 2026 using a Factorial Randomized Block Design (RBD) with two factors and three replications. The first factor was the type of LOF based on EM4 and molasses concentrations (P1: 0 ml, P2: 20 ml, P3: 40 ml, P4: 60 ml). The second factor was the LOF application dosage (D1: 15 ml L⁻¹ dan D2: 30 ml L⁻¹). The results indicated that increasing EM4 and molasses concentrations altered the LOF color to dark brown and intensified the fermented tape-like aroma, while maintaining a stable temperature (33,29–34,08°C). Variations in the LOF type exerted no significant effect on any growth parameters of the spinach. Conversely, the application dosage factor had a significant independent effect during the early growth phase (21 days after planting / DAP). The 15 ml L⁻¹ (D1) produced a significantly higher number of leaves, leaf area (11,32 cm²), fresh weight (0.45 g), dry weight (0.035 g), Relative Growth Rate/RGR (0,74 g g⁻¹ day⁻¹), and Net Assimilation Rate/NAR (0,0075 g cm⁻² day⁻¹) compared to the 30 ml L⁻¹ dosage (D2).

Abstract

Weed infestation remains one of the major constraints limiting rice productivity because it competes with crops for water, nutrients, light, and growing space. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of two selective herbicide formulations containing Bentazone (400 g L⁻¹) + MCPA (60 g L⁻¹), commercially marketed as Basagran® and Bentagram®, in suppressing weeds and supporting the vegetative growth of rice (Oryza sativa L.) cv. Inpari 32. The experiment was conducted in irrigated rice fields in Jombang Regency, East Java, Indonesia, from May to June 2025 using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). Treatments consisted of six herbicide doses (0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, and 1.75 L ha⁻¹) and an untreated control, each replicated twice. Data on weed diversity, dominance index, weed dry weight, plant height, and tiller number were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test at the 5% significance level. The application of both herbicides reduced weed diversity, with the Shannon–Wiener diversity index ranging from 1.39 to 1.56 and Simpson's dominance index remaining low (0.22–0.25), indicating effective weed suppression without dominance of any weed species. Basagran had no significant effect (p > 0.05) on plant height, tiller number, or weed dry weight, whereas Bentagram significantly increased tiller number (p < 0.05) while maintaining normal plant growth. Although the highest numerical responses were occasionally observed at 1.75 L ha⁻¹, they were not significantly different from those at 1.5 L ha⁻¹. Therefore, 1.5 L ha⁻¹ was identified as the optimum application rate because it effectively suppressed weeds without causing phytotoxicity or adversely affecting rice vegetative growth. These findings demonstrate that Bentazone + MCPA herbicides can be effectively incorporated into sustainable weed management programs to improve rice cultivation efficiency while minimizing unnecessary herbicide inputs.
