Abstract

There is a problem in the SLB B Yakut education report, namely that the reading skills of SLB students are still lacking. This is due to several factors, such as the implementation of the school literacy movement for deaf children at SLB B Yakut Purwokerto has not been running well, a lack of non-academic books, and teachers have not maximized learning innovations. Therefore, this community service activity aims to improve the literacy skills of SLB students, particularly those who are deaf and mute. The methods used for this community service activity include Forum Group Discussions (FGD), socialization, training, and mentoring for both teachers and SLB students. This literacy improvement activity consists of several stages, beginning with a Forum Group Discussion (FGD) between the community service team and the school, socialization of the School Literacy Movement (GLS) for SLB teachers to reactivate GLS activities, and literacy training packaged into several activities. The series of literacy training activities includes writing literacy training conducted using out-of-classroom learning methods.Furthermore, the application of technology through educational games for learning English and training in Canva for poster creation is also part of a series of literacy training activities. The service team also provides ongoing support for these activities, enabling the successful implementation of a literacy jamboree that produces various student works from the Special Education School (SLB), including poems, prose, and posters. The reading skills of SLB students have improved significantly due to the active daily participation in GLS activities, and their writing skills have also improved, as evidenced by the students' works in the form of prose, poems, and posters.

Abstract

In this era of rapid technological advancement, society needs to be equipped with the skills to discern reliable information. Digital literacy is an important foundation for society to be able to use information technology appropriately, ethically, and responsibly. This serves as the foundation for the Community Service Team from the English Literature Program at the Faculty of Letters, University of Brawijaya, to initiate a training and digital literacy enhancement program for the community, specifically targeting the Aqil Reading House community, particularly the Kampung Cerdas Ceria Creative Gallery Foundation, also known as TBM Creative Gallery, as one of the program's partners. This activity aims to empower the community by strengthening their understanding of digital concepts and skills. Specifically, the activity seeks to conduct training on four digital competencies: digital skills, digital ethics, digital safety, and digital culture, as well as provide guidance to the community in optimizing the use of widely available digital learning resources and information. This activity is expected to broaden knowledge about the concept of digital literacy and its implementation so that universities can formulate policies that will support efforts to empower communities with broad digital literacy. Institutionally, this activity is a manifestation of FIB UB's role in building a society that is able to utilize digital resources to the fullest and responsibly.

Abstract

This community service program aims to provide education and training in learning strategies that are useful for the teaching and learning process in accordance with government requirements. This is based on the observation that most teachers in Indonesia do not receive continuous professional development, and only a few teachers receive guidance from external facilitators, school principals, supervisors, or experienced fellow teachers. The low quality of teachers is one of the causes of the low quality of education. Fundamental changes are needed in the education system, especially those that focus on improving teacher competence, in order to create a quality learning process. One way to achieve this is by organizing training for teachers, especially Japanese language teachers in the Malang Raya area, who rarely have the opportunity to improve their competence. The learning method currently being promoted by the government is the 21st-century learning method. However, to date, many teachers still conduct teaching and learning processes that are not based on 21st-century thinking processes, which require the implementation of critical, collaborative, communicative, and creative thinking. The implementation of 21st-century learning processes does indeed require specific knowledge and effort, making teachers reluctant to implement them. Training in literacy-based learning strategies is one effort to overcome this problem.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Mentorship program is one of recommended ways that can be used to assist the SDGs, particularly Quality Education. The goal of this program is to prepare students to take the English Language Proficiency Test (TOEFL), as one of graduation requirements. Since not all students have access to TOEFL preparation, this assistance is crucial to help them overcome the obstacles they confront before taking the test. Attaining the targeted TOEFL score becomes difficult when there are constraints on time, resources, and study tools. Fifty-five students in grade IV in one of vocational schools called as Bamasis in East Java Indonesia participated in the support. TOEFL tests as trial tests were conducted before and after the mentorship to find out the students’ scores and compare their scores. In addition, questionnaire distribution was conducted to find out Bamasis’ perception of the mentorship. The findings show that the students’ scores have improved greatly before and after the mentorship. Students give positive responses regarding the implementation of mentorship in terms of the mentor performance, TOEFL material appropriateness and clarity, and students’ facilities. It implies that mentorship is beneficial for the students since they give students opportunities to drill themselves and get them familiar with TOEFL test items.

Abstract

The use of technology in learning is not only a necessity but also a requirement for creating more creative, critical, innovative, and communicative learning. The integration of AI in learning changes the paradigm of teachers from being instructors to facilitators, collaborators, mentors, coaches, guides, and learning companions who can train students to become independent and responsible learners. However, this is hindered by the imbalance in teachers' knowledge regarding the use of technology in developing teaching materials. This Community Service Activity aims to provide guidance on the use of technology in developing English language teaching materials for English teachers at vocational high schools in Banyuwangi Regency, East Java. Teachers will participate in a three-month program for the development of English teaching materials, which includes the stages of needs analysis, training, guidance, and evaluation of activities.

Abstract

The development of batik has spread to almost all subdistricts and villages, especially in East Java. Each community strives to produce and find uniqueness in creating their batik motifs. In Singosari Subdistrict, Malang Regency, there is a community of batik craftsmen from villages and subdistricts in the Singosari area, namely the Singosari Batik Association. To date, numerous batik motifs have been created. However, these have not yet met sales targets due to the lack of a distinctive and unique batik identity from the artisans of the Singosari Batik Association. Therefore, guidance is needed in exploring ideas for motifs, as well as experimenting with forms, compositions, and colors in designing batik motifs that can reflect the identity of Singosari batik artisans. In exploring the uniqueness of Singosari motifs, two approaches are used. The first is through the traditional culture of Singosari, which can be traced back to the historical greatness of the Singosari kingdom in the past. The second approach is through the culture that has been developed in the present day. These two approaches can be used to describe the form of Singosari motifs. To strengthen the identity of Singosari motifs, color can also support the composition of the motifs. When determining the characteristic colors of Singosari, natural colors can be sourced from plants that grow and are endemic to Singosari. Some motifs resulting from the redesign of craftsmen's sketches have also been re-explored and transformed into new motifs that craftsmen can use as design inspiration for future batik creations. The diversity of attractive batik motifs will undoubtedly influence consumer purchasing power, thereby increasing the production output of the Singosari Batik Association. It is hoped that the batik fabric produced will once again become the signature fabric of Singosari, recognized by all segments of society, and represent East Java both domestically and internationally in the future.

Abstract

Potehi puppetry is an art performance that uses puppets from South China, which came to Indonesia in the 16th and 17th centuries. The development of these puppet shows experienced ups and downs, especially the prohibition of everything with Chinese nuances, in 1967 and improved in 2000. The preservation and continuity of potehi puppets are also carried out by the Fu He An community, Gudo, Jombang, led by Toni Harsono. Toni Harsono's motivation to develop this community stems from his concern about the condition of many damaged potehi puppets, the scarcity of authentic potehi puppets, and his desire to re-modify them so they can be preserved for the future. Toni Harsono's efforts have been welcomed by academics from within and outside the country, who have conducted various studies on potehi puppets. The public has also carried out the preservation and sustainability of potehi puppets through social media. However, the Fu He An community still needs to work on accessing information and understanding cultural digitization, especially in the context of making documentary films. Therefore, this community service activity aims to create a series of documentary films with the initial theme of the history of the making and character formation of the Jombang; Gudo potehi puppets, and make a Instagram account and website Wayang Potehi, Gudo. Abstract

Abstract Digital literacy refers to a person's ability to use digital technology effectively, including an understanding of how the technology functions, the ability to evaluate and understand digital information, and skills in interacting with digital devices and platforms for specific purposes such as communication, information retrieval, and content creation. This includes an understanding of the basic concepts of digital technology, online security, copyright, data privacy, as well as the ability to solve problems and adapt to rapid technological developments. Digital literacy has become increasingly important in today's digital era where digital technology permeates almost every aspect of daily life and is key to participating effectively in a technology-driven society and economy. Digital literacy assistance in developing entrepreneurship is a followup to the training given to residents of Tunjungsekar Subdistrict. From the team's observations, the residents in RT 03 RW 04, Tunjungsekar Village, still needs assistance after training was held for its members. The lack of training activities encouraged the team to carry out service activities. It is hoped that by providing digital literacy assistance in entrepreneurship, their knowledge and enthusiasm for opening a business will increase, so that they can help improve the economy/welfare of their families.
