Abstract

This community service in Talang Keramat Village, South Sumatra, Indonesia, aimed to empower homemakers by valorising fish skin waste. The primary objective was to promote its use in processed food to improve nutrition and economic prospects. The project specifically sought to: (1) enhance understanding of fish skin's potential as a raw material for nutritious and economically viable food; (2) demonstrate practical methods for processing fish skin into food products; and (3) shift community perception regarding the benefits of utilizing fish skin waste. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, with implementation in three phases: pre- and post-test questionnaires to assess comprehension; educational material on transforming fish skin waste; and a demonstration of processed food preparation. Sixteen homemakers participated in the one-day activity. Results showed that 75.00% understood the nutritional and economic value of fish skin waste, 81.25% could explain processing methods, and 87.50% showed improved understanding of its benefits. In conclusion, this community service successfully empowered homemakers with the knowledge and skills to convert fish waste into valuable food products, contributing to nutritional enhancement and economic empowerment within the community.

Abstract

The skill of writing scientific papers has become a requirement for students as undergraduate graduates. The aim of this community service is to improve students' skills in writing articles as scientific papers. This research is classified as a case study in the form of training in writing popular scientific articles as a reference for students of the Educational Administration study program in semesters I (one), III (three) and V (five). Held on October 18, 2024, 40 (Forty) students registered as participants in the Popular Article Writing Training to Improve Scientific Writing Skills using lecture, discussion, example and practice methods. The evaluation results showed a significant improvement in students' writing skills, as seen from their ability to compose more structured and logical articles with a score of 87%. The support and guidance from lecturers and facilitators during the training greatly helped students in completing their writing so that they were more confident with a score of 85%. It is recommended that training be held periodically, guidance from lecturers be strengthened, and collaboration with scientific journals be expanded. Continuous evaluation is also necessary to ensure program effectiveness and necessary improvements. It is hoped that this activity can continue to be developed to provide greater benefits for students in improving the quality of their scientific work.

Abstract

Background: Pregnancy is a significant and eagerly anticipated event within families, closely tied to the cultural values they uphold. As the primary support system for pregnant women, families influence key health behaviors, particularly nutrition and monitoring of fetal well-being. Health workers play a vital role in assisting pregnant women and their families to adapt cultural practices in support of maternal and fetal health.Aims: This study aims to enhance the role of health workers in optimizing maternal nutrition and monitoring fetal well-being through the implementation of a culturally sensitive Family Maternal-Neonatal Education (EMN) model. The specific objective is to empower community health volunteers (cadres) to improve maternal nutrition and monitor fetal well-being effectively. Methods: The implementation adopted a Community Nursing Approach and utilized Community Development (CD) strategies. Cadres participated in persuasive and educational training programs tailored to cultural contexts. These sessions focused on key competencies in maternal nutrition during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as well as techniques for monitoring fetal well-being.Result: Following the training, cadres showed a significant improvement in knowledge related to maternal nutrition and breastfeeding, with an average increase of 10 points in knowledge assessment scores. This improvement supports broader efforts to reduce maternal and infant mortality and prevent stunting in children. Conclusion: Continuous training using a culturally based EMN model is necessary to further strengthen cadre competencies in supporting maternal nutrition and fetal well-being. This approach contributes to sustainable improvements in maternal and neonatal health outcomes within culturally diverse communities.

Abstract

Background: The development of a School Strategic Plan (SSP), based on internal and external environmental analysis and aligned with the National Education Standards, is a crucial component for improving the quality of education, including in Special Needs Schools (SNS). However, many principals and teachers in SNSs have a limited understanding of strategic planning concepts. They also lack the skills to use analytical tools such as SWOT and to apply National Education Standards instruments in school planning.Aims: This community service activity aimed to enhance the competence of principals and teachers in four SNSs in Manggarai Regency through intensive and structured mentoring. Methods: The methods used included mapping surveys, material presentations, guided document revisions, and SSP evaluations. The instruments employed were pretest-posttest questionnaires on SSP, which assessed six key aspects of planning competence, existing SSP documents from the schools, and National Education Standards mapping questionnaires used to evaluate the initial implementation of quality culture. A T-test was applied to analyze differences in pretest and posttest scores, while the SSP document analysis was conducted qualitatively. Results: The mentoring results showed a significant improvement in participants’ competence in developing SSPs, as indicated by the increase in pretest-posttest questionnaire scores. A T-test confirmed a statistically significant difference between the pretest and posttest results (T = -62.63; P < 0.05).Conclusion: This mentoring model is both replicable and sustainable for improving the quality of educational management in Special Needs Schools and strengthening school accreditation.
