Abstract

Leftover rice is one type of organic waste that can be recycled. However, people generally throw leftover rice into the trash. If this waste is left unattended, it will cause an unpleasant odor and can pollute the environment. One solution to overcome this problem is to create liquid local microorganisms that can be used as liquid organic fertilizer (POC). This organic fertilizer can enhance plant growth. Therefore, it needs to be developed as an environmentally friendly organic fertilizer. An activity that can be carried out is to conduct training on making POC from leftover rice for women in Dusun IVB Karang Sari, Jatimulyo District, South Lampung Regency, Lampung Province. This community service activity aims to increase knowledge and skills in making Liquid Organic Fertilizer from leftover rice. The results of this community service activity show an increase in knowledge and skills, as seen from the pre-test results of 70.81 and the post-test results of 91.35. There was an increase of 20.54 points. The sustainability of this activity is the wpmen in Dusun IV B Karang Sari can make Liquid Organic Fertilizer from leftover rice and use it for their plants.

Abstract

Dengue fever (DHF) is a tropical disease transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Prolonged use of synthetic chemical larvicides such as Abate® has led to resistance and environmental impacts. Therefore, an alternative natural larvicide that is more environmentally sustainable is needed. Eucheuma cottonii is a red alga known to contain bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenoids, saponins, and tannins that can potentially inhibit mosquito larvae development. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the ethanol extract of E. cottonii on the mortality of Aedes aegypti instar III larvae as a basis for the development of natural biolarvicides. The study used a completely randomized design (CRD) with six treatments: four extract concentrations (50 ppm, 100 ppm, 200 ppm, and 300 ppm), one positive control (Abate®), and one negative control (water). Each test unit contained 20 third-instar larvae with four replicates. Observations were made 4, 8, 24, 48, and 72 hours after treatment. The highest larval mortality was achieved at a 200 ppm concentration of 13.25 ± 3.94. The LC₅₀ value at 24 hours was 42.35 ppm, while the LT₅₀ reached 52.77 hours, indicating a slow and less effective larvicidal effect at the test concentration. Although the ethanol extract of E. cottonii contains bioactive compounds, its effectiveness as a larvicide against Aedes aegypti larvae is still relatively low. These results indicate that E. cottonii is not optimally used alone as a bio-larvicide, but still has the potential to be further developed through improved extraction methods, increased concentrations, or combination formulations. This study provides a foundation for creating sustainable and environmentally friendly plant-based larvicides.

Abstract

Abstract

The use of biolarvicides is an alternative biological agent to replace synthetic insecticides, namely entomopathogenic bacteria. The purpose of this study was to determine the potential of Bacillus thuringiensis and Serratia marcescens extracts on mortality and morphological changes in Aedes aegypti larvae. This study was a 2-factor experimental study using a Randomized Block Design (RBD). The first factor, the type of entomopathogenic bacteria, namely B. thuringiensis and S. marcescens. The second factor, the concentration of bacterial extracts (60 mL, 70 mL, 80 mL), negative control (sterile distilled water). Mortality data were processed using ANOVA at the 5% level. The results showed that the administration of B. thuringiensis and S. marcescens extracts caused mortality and morphological changes in Ae. aegypti larvae. B. thuringiensis at concentrations of 60 mL, 70 mL, and 80 mL caused 100% larval mortality, while S. marcescens at concentrations of 60 mL resulted in 70%, 53%, and 50% at concentrations of 70 mL and 80 mL, respectively. Morphological changes in larvae were indicated by changes in color, texture, and damage to the digestive system. It was concluded that B. thuringiensis has the highest potential as an entomopathogenic agent compared to S. marcescens in causing mortality and morphological changes in Ae. aegypti larvae.

Abstract

Averrhoa bilimbi L. is a type of plant that grows in yards or home gardens. This species belongs to the order Oxalidales and the family Oxalidaceae. This species belongs to the Oxalidales order and Oxalidaceae family. This plant has many benefits, including its stems, leaves, flowers, and fruit. The women of PKK RT 004 generally use the fresh flowers and fruit. The fresh fruit is used as an addition in making fish pindang as a substitute for tamarind and candis acid. However, the women of PKK have never used preserved fruit as sweets and asam sunti.  Therefore, it is necessary to optimize the use of fruit  by preserving it, such asam sunti.  Asam sunti is commonly used by the people of Aceh. Asam sunti is made from dried fruit, which is salted and dried in the sun repeatedly until the  fruit is dry and brown in color. The results of this community service activity showed good pre-test and post-test scores. The average pre-test score was 92.87 and the average post-test score was 98. There was an increase of 5.33 points. The sustainability of this community service activity is that the PKK mothers of RT 004 can disseminate the information obtained from this activity to other communities.
