Abstract

This research examined the effect of using a language game approach on developing Indonesian speaking skills among students at PG-TK Plus Sutomo 1, Medan. This study was designed using an experimental method using a pretest-posttest format with a control group. The research data showed a significant improvement in students' speaking skills in the experimental group, with an average pretest score of 61.2, which increased to 77.5 after the posttest. The Paired Sample T-Test obtained a significance value of 0.001 (p < 0.05), while the Independent Sample T-Test obtained a significance value of 0.025 (p < 0.05). These results confirm that applying language game techniques significantly improves students' speaking skills. Although the effect size is relatively small (Cohen's d = 0.2), this finding indicates that the influence of language games on improving speaking skills is still limited in practice. However, applying this technique remains relevant because it fosters speaking courage, enriches vocabulary, and encourages active student involvement. It can also serve as a basis for further studies using a larger and more diverse sample range. This study concludes that the language game strategy is a practical approach to improving and developing students' Indonesian oral communication skills at PG-TK Plus Sutomo 1 Medan. Although the effects are relatively small in practical terms, this strategy is still beneficial in building speaking confidence, enriching vocabulary, and increasing active student participation. The implications of these findings suggest the need for further research with a larger sample size to more fully demonstrate the influence of language games on speaking skills.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the extent to which the application of the Discovery Learning model significantly influences the speech writing skills of eighth-grade students at Sultan Iskandar Muda Junior High School. This study used a quantitative approach with an experimental method, because the main focus is to test the influence or causal relationship between the use of the Discovery Learning model and students' speech writing skills. The subjects of this study were eighth-grade students of Sultan Iskandar Muda Junior High School. Class VIII was selected based on the consideration that at this level students already have basic writing skills, but still require further guidance in composing systematic and communicative speech texts. The study population consisted of 32 students, and the sampling technique used was total sampling, so that all members of the population were used as research samples. The results showed that the application of Discovery Learning (variable X) had a positive and significant influence on students' speech writing skills (variable Y) in the Indonesian Language subject. In other words, the more optimal the application of the Discovery Learning model, the better the students' ability to write speech texts effectively.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms of code-switching and code-mixing of the Batak language and the factors influencing their use in the process of Indonesian language learning in Grade VIII at SMP Negeri 3 Pangururan. Language as a means of social communication demonstrates complex dynamics in bilingual communities such as those in Samosir Regency. In the classroom context, teachers and students frequently switch and mix Indonesian with Batak during instructional interactions. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected through observation of classroom interactions. The findings indicate that code-switching and code-mixing of the Batak language commonly occur during Indonesian language instruction. These phenomena are influenced by speakers’ language habits, limited Indonesian vocabulary, and interlocutor-related factors. This study offers novelty in terms of research location, participants, and learning context, and is expected to contribute to language learning practices and sociolinguistic studies, particularly concerning code-switching and code-mixing.

Abstract

This qualitative study aims to find out and describe in detail the importance of the role of YouTube media as a learning material and analyze the perspective of Indonesian Language teachers of SMA Negeri 1 Doloksanggul on the use of YouTube to improve their students’ skills in writing expository texts. This study can theoretically contribute to the development of theories in the fields of education, teaching, or humanities that are relevant and practically useful as a reference for future research with similar topics and to improve public understanding of the benefits of YouTube for expository text writing skills. The main data were obtained from the structured face-to- face interview with five respondents. By applying thematic analysis, the transcribed interview results were arranged and categorized based on relevant themes. The results show that YouTube plays an important role because it can be perceived as an interesting, effective, and creative media, however, teachers must be proactive in this regard. Thisstudy also suggests that the use of YouTube as a learning material for writing expository texts is considered effective because students are encouraged to argue, use more vocabulary, write texts systematically and are motivated. The results of the data analysis show that the obstacles often encountered are problems with the Internet network, school facilities, and distractions.

Abstract

This study is based on the fact that the development of 21st-century skills is very important, especially critical thinking skills, which until now are considered lacking in conventional learning methods. The purpose of this study is to determine how much influence the problem posing method has on students' ability to think critically during the reading comprehension learning process. This type of research is quantitative experiment. In grade XI of SMA Negeri 5 Tanjungbalai, students were divided into two groups. One group is the experimental class using the problem posing method, and the other is the control class using the conventional method. A test was used to assess critical thinking skills through reading comprehension. The results of the study illustrate that the problem posing technique improves students' ability to think critically with a mean of 88.77 compared to students using the conventional method with a mean of 82.17. According to the t-test, there is a significant difference (sig. (2-tailed) = 0.000 < 0.05), and the effect size produces a value of 1.14, which indicates that it is in the high category. These results indicate that problem posing is an effective technique for teaching students to think critically. This research shows that problem posing can be used as a learning method that encourages active student learning and improves critical and in-depth text comprehension.
