Abstract

Background: Pneumonia remains a major cause of morbidity among toddlers in Indonesia, with household exposure to cigarette smoke acting as a significant and preventable risk factor. Posyandu cadres play a crucial role in community-based child health services; however, their capacity to screen environmental risks and perform early detection of respiratory compromise is often limited. Center, Simpang Kawat Community Health Center, and Paal X Community Health Center in 2024. This community service program aimed to strengthen the knowledge and practical skills of Posyandu cadres in pneumonia prevention through smoking exposure screening and pulse oximeter training Method: A community-based intervention with a pre-test and post-test design was conducted among 20 Posyandu cadres in the working area of the Olak Kemang Community Health Centre, Jambi City. The intervention consisted of interactive health education on secondhand and thirdhand smoke, a humanistic approach using case-based discussions, hands-on training in pulse oximeter use, and the introduction of a household smoking exposure screening tool. Changes in cadres’ knowledge were evaluated using structured questionnaires administered before and after the intervention. Results: The average knowledge score increased from 65% at baseline to 86% after the intervention, representing an absolute increase of 21 percentage points and a relative improvement of 32.31%, exceeding the predefined success criterion of a ≥20% increase. Conclusion: The program was effective in enhancing Posyandu cadres’ understanding of smoking-related health risks and their ability to perform early hypoxia detection using pulse oximetry. Strengthening cadre capacity through integrated and practical training may support community-based pneumonia prevention and promote healthier, smoke-free environments for toddlers

Abstract

Background: Pulmonary tuberculosis is a preventable infectious disease, but according to 2022 data, pulmonary TB ranks second in causing deaths worldwide after the coronavirus (COVID-19). Household environmental conditions are thought to play a role in its transmission. This study aims to determine the relationship between lighting, humidity, and ventilation in homes and the incidence of pulmonary TB at the Pakuan Baru Community Health Center, Simpang Kawat Community Health Center, and Paal X Community Health Center in 2024. Method: This research uses a case-control design with a sample of 104 respondents (26 cases, 78 controls) in three community health center areas. Lighting and humidity measurements were taken using a lux meter and hygrometer, while windows were measured using observation sheets. Data were analyzed univariately and bivariately using the Chi-Square test with Odds Ratio (OR). Results: Most homes of TB patients have inadequate environmental conditions. Analysis shows a significant relationship between inadequate humidity (OR=54.86; 95% CI:11.60-259.52; p<0.001), inadequate lighting (OR=13.83; 95% CI: 4.61-41.52; p<0.001), and lack of windows (OR=4.29; 95% CI: 1.62-11.35; p=0.002) with TB incidence. Conclusion: Poor household environmental conditions, such as humidity, lighting, and window conditions, are risk factors for TB. It is recommended that TB prevention programs integrate the promotion of household environmental improvements.

Abstract

Duku peel is an underutilized agricultural byproduct in Talang Duku Village, a major center of duku production, and is commonly discarded as waste. The community’s heavy reliance on synthetic chemical insecticides presents environmental and health risks, compounded by limited knowledge regarding the processing of agricultural waste into value-added products. This community service program aimed to empower the “A. Khalik Duku Plantation” Farmers Group by converting duku peel waste into a high-value plant-based insecticide in the form of aromatherapy candles, thereby fostering a new generation of creative healthpreneurs. The program applied a participatory community empowerment approach through education, hands-on training, and continuous mentoring. The stages included needs assessment, production and business management training, and evaluation using pre-test and post-test data analyzed with the Wilcoxon and Chi-Square tests. The results showed a significant improvement in participants’ knowledge (P < 0.001), with the median score increasing from 70% to 80% and the number of participants achieving the ≥80% competency threshold rising from 13 to 49. Furthermore, the program successfully facilitated the production of insect-repellent aromatherapy candles and the establishment of the “KUB Duku Lestari” Joint Business Group, which sold more than 50 units within the first three months. In conclusion, this program effectively transformed agricultural waste into a valuable product, promoted sustainable entrepreneurship, and contributed to improving community welfare. It is recommended that the business group standardize product packaging to enhance market competitiveness and that future studies focus on optimizing extraction techniques to improve product efficacy.

Abstract

Stunting is a public health problem with a high prevalence in Indonesia. The Batanghari District has a stunting rate of 26.3%, exceeding the national target; however, specific regional determinants have not been comprehensively identified. This study aimed to identify multifactorial predictors of stunting in children under five years in Batanghari District. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Batanghari District from August to October 2024, involving 64 children aged 0–60 months selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected via structured questionnaires, anthropometric measurements via WHO standards, and 24 h dietary assessment food recall. Stunting was defined as a height-for-age z score < -2 SD. For statistical analysis, binary logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The prevalence of stunting was 70.3% (n=45). Inadequate energy density was the strongest predictor (OR = 11.389; 95% CI: 2.906–44.627; p < 0.001), followed by poor drinking water quality (OR = 8.705; 95% CI: 1.668–45.445; p = 0.004), history of problematic pregnancy (OR = 8.250; 95% CI: 0.799–85.165; p = 0.041), poor type of food (OR = 5.123; 95% CI: 1.449–18.110; p = 0.011), calcium density (OR = 4.242; 95% CI: 1.181–15.234; p = 0.021), income below the regional minimum wage (OR = 3.681; 95% CI: 1.146–11.832; p = 0.025), and authoritarian parenting (OR = 3.523; 95% CI: 1.056–11.762; p = 0.036). These findings suggest that stunting in Batanghari District is associated with a complex interplay of nutritional deficiencies, socioeconomic factors, environmental conditions, maternal health, and behavioral factors

Abstract

Stunting affects 149.2 million children globally, with Indonesia reporting a prevalence of 21.6%, despite a decline in trends. Urban-specific risk factors remain poorly characterized, which limits the development of effective intervention strategies for metropolitan areas. This study aimed to identify the risk factors associated with stunting in children aged 0 to 59 months in Jambi, Indonesia. This case-control study involved 108 children aged 0 to 59 months from five community health centers in Jambi City from December 2024 to January 2025. The cases (n = 54) were children with height-for-age z scores of less than 2 standard deviations (SD), and the controls (n = 54) had standard growth patterns. Data collection involved anthropometric measurements and structured maternal interviews, which were analyzed via chi-square tests with 95% confidence intervals. Low birth length had a very high odds ratio (OR = 45.69, 95% CI = 5.88 to 354.70; p < 0.001), whereas inadequate complementary feeding resulted in a perfect prediction (OR = 5.33, 95% CI = 3.20 to 8.88; p < 0.001). Incomplete immunization (OR = 37.81, 95% CI = 8.32 to 171.71; p < 0.001) and maternal educational deficit (OR = 6.53, 95% CI = 1.76 to 24.18; p = 0.002) were identified as the primary modifiable determinants. Multisectoral strategies targeting maternal nutrition, universal immunization, and education-based interventions are necessary to reduce stunting in Indonesia’s urban population sustainably.
