Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of R2L model on scienctific literacy competence of students on the classification of Living Things learning material. The type of this research is a quasi experiment with nonequivalent control group design. This research was conducted in the 7th grade of SMPN 7 Payakumbuh, West Sumatra. The sampling was taken by purposive sampling technique to get 32 students of class VII.I as experimental group and 23 students of class VII.II as control group. The instrument used is a test of science literacy questions as many as 16 questions with 3 forms of questions.  The results showed that the use of the R2L model increase the science literacy competence of students. The important syntax in supporting the improvement of students' scientific literacy competence is at the detailed reading and note-making stages. This stage allows students to read the reading text attentively and find important words in the text.

Abstract

As a strategy to create learning environment by integrating culture into learning, ethnoscience fits perfectly with the aims of science lesson in the national curriculum of education in Indonesia, which is to understand how nature works, and to improve awareness toward conserving and maintaining balance in nature. Leading toward Education for Sustainability Development (ESD), science learning could serve to develop students’ ability in thinking, learning, and building awareness towards natural and physical environment. In this study, we aimed to design a web-based e-module integrated with both ethnoscience and critical thinking orientation to facilitate students’ learning dan thinking. The product is developed with 4D-model consisting of 4 stages namely: Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate. Product’s validity and practicality was assessed using instruments with Likert—scale items and analyzed with descriptive statistics. From Define and Design stage, four themes of ethnoscience are embedded in the e-module, namely: gold panning, salt farming, the making of virgin coconut oil, and Jamu– a folk drink. From develop and disseminate stage, the web-based e-module was tested to be highly valid and practical to be used as teaching materials. The product received positive feedbacks students especially related to the implementation of Kurikulum Merdeka.

Abstract

This research focuses on developing handout teaching materials based on critical thinking skills to enhance students' scientific literacy. The study employed the RD development method, along with the ADDIE model. The research subjects included material and media validators, science teachers, and eighth-grade of Junior high school students. The research utilized validation forms, questionnaire responses, pretest, and posttest as instruments. Data analysis techniques involved percentage equation, independent sample t-test, N-gain test, and effect size test. The results indicated that the handouts' quality, as assessed by material validators, was 92.31%, while media validators reported a score of 90.89%, placing both categories in the very decent range. There was a significant difference in average learning outcomes between students who utilize handouts and those who did not. The increase in scientific literacy ability was 0.7, indicating a high category, and the effect size of using handouts is 2.8, denoting a large category. Consequently, handout teaching materials based on critical thinking skills are deemed suitable for improving students' scientific literacy.

Abstract

In the 21st century the educational curriculum has developed to a higher level with the aim of building students' intelligence abilities in learning, especially in science learning, one way to improve students' cognitive learning outcomes is to use Problem Based Learning (PBL) models. PBL is a learning model that requires students to be able to solve problems that occur in the real world as a context for developing critical thinking skills and problem solving. The PBL learning model has been widely used by previous researchers, but not many studies have thoroughly examined the PBL model in junior high school science learning. The method used in this research is descriptive using a quantitative approach followed by meta-analysis techniques. The population in this study were S1-S3 indexed scientific publication articles and articles with ISSN, the sample used in this study were 31 articles. There are three results from this study, firstly the application of the PBL model in science learning has a very high influence on class VII with an effect size of 1,32, secondly the application of the PBL model has a very high influence on the material growth and development of living things with an effect size value of 4,27, the third application of the PBL model to students' cognitive learning outcomes has a very high effect with an effect size value of 1,19.

Abstract

The rapid development of science and technology in the 21st century has increased awareness of the importance of education in developing individual competencies and improving overall educational quality. In Indonesia, educational quality remains a major concern. One contributing factor is the use of ineffective learning strategies, which often results in low student engagement and declining learning outcomes. Therefore, the selection of appropriate learning strategies is essential. The Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review (SQ3R) strategy is one approach that can encourage students to participate actively in exploring, questioning, and discussing learning materials. This study aims to describe the implementation of the SQ3R strategy in science learning at SMP Negeri 10 Padangsidimpuan. A descriptive qualitative approach was used, involving 23 students from class VIII-1 as research participants. Data were collected through observations conducted during the learning process. The findings indicate that at the Survey stage, students successfully skimmed the material to gain an initial understanding, with an implementation rate of 100%. At the Question stage, students formulated relevant questions with a 98% implementation rate. During the Read stage, students read the material thoroughly, achieving 100%. At the Recite stage, they effectively recalled key concepts, also with 100%. Finally, at the Review stage, students were able to present their answers and review the material with a 99% implementation rate. Overall, the SQ3R strategy was implemented effectively, with an average implementation rate of 99%.

Abstract

Organic fertilizers have been popular lately because they are believed to increase agricultural yields and are environmentally friendly. With the increasing popularity of fertilizer use, farmers have innovated to make their organic fertilizers using materials available in their surroundings. The problem experienced by farmers is regarding the testing of the fertilizer produced. This community service activity aims to assist farmers in testing fertilizers in the laboratory and provide insight into testing the effectiveness of fertilizers in Jorong Arikia, Nagari Dalko, Agam Regency, aided by 39 students from Padang State University. Assistance is carried out through discussions related to fertilizers, then continued with preparing for testing and assisting in testing fertilizers. The results of this community service activity are increasing farmers' insight in testing organic fertilizers so that the fertilizers produced can optimize harvest results, be certified, and be produced on a large scale to encourage economic growth in the region. In addition, this PkM activity also aims to provide a forum for UNP students who are carrying out community service program activities to be able to practice the knowledge they have gained on campus in the field. Thus, this PkM program is directly integrated with campus activities and is expected to develop further in the future so as to provide a greater contribution to society.

This learning was carried out for 3 meetings on dynamic electricity material. During the study, observations were made by two observers using an observation sheet containing the student's character. Aspects of student character observed in this study were curiosity, adaptability, social behavior, and initiative. The students observed consisted of four classes. The number of students involved was 64 students (n=64). Based on observations, the highest character that emerges from students during learning is the character of socio-cultural behavior (52.95%), while the lowest character is curiosity (44.44%).
