Abstract

Dyslipidemia condition causes oxidative stress that triggers inflammation. Moringa leaves are rich in fiber and antioxidants that can prevent oxidative stress and reduce inflammation. This study aimed to see, measure, and analyze the effect of Moringa flour supplementation on IL-6 and LDL levels of dyslipidemic Sprague Dawley (SD) rats. The type of study was true-experiment with randomized pre-post. Test with control. Group design. Intervention for 28 days in 4 groups of SD rats (n= 24); a consisting group of healthy rats (K-), dyslipidemic rats (K+), dyslipidemic rats respectively given 0.1g/100g BW moringa flour (P1), and 0.2 g/100g BW moringa flour (P2). ELISA and CHOD-PAP methods measured IL-6 and LDL levels. Statistical analysis used Paired t-test, One-way Anova, and Post Hoc Bonferroni. The results showed a significant decrease in IL-6 and LDL levels in the intervention group compared to the non-intervention group (p= 0,000). The reduction of IL-6 levels in the P2 group was greater than that in the P1 group but not significant. The decrease. in LDL levels in the P2 group was significantly higher than in the P1 group. It is attributed to the fiber and antioxidant content in Moringa. Fiber that can bind cholesterol and bile acids, antioxidants can regulate fat metabolism, capture free radicals and prevent oxidative stress. In conclusion, Moringa flour supplementation improved lipid profiles and inflammation compared to rats with only standard and high-fat diets

Abstract

Diabetes is a metabolic disease that occurs in a person characterized by hyperglycemia. One of the cause of diabetes melitus is excessive consumption of simple sugar, so it is necessary to replace sugar (sucrose) with natural sweteeners derived from sweet fruit such as kersen, kawista and trembesi. This research is an experimental study to make natural sweeteners from kersen, kawista and trembesi fruit powder. The natural sweeteners of kersen, kawista dan trembesi fruit powder were analyzed for protein, fat, dietary fiber, ash, water, and carbohydrates. The solubility tests was carried out by the AOAC method, brix with refractometry, sugar content by spectrophotometry, organoleptic properties by hedonic test. The natural sweetener of trembesi fruit powder was analyzed glycemic index by the method of Wolever et al. (2001) and glycemic load was calculated from glycemic index test of food taking into account the amount of carbohydrates available in the serving size. There was a significant difference (p<0,05) in solubility, brix index, total sugar, sucrose content, organoleptic preference level moisture, ash, fat, protein, and carbohydrate content among the three types of fruit powder but there was no significant difference (p>0,05) on the dietary fiber and reducing sugar content. The glycemic index and glycemic load value of trembesi fruit powder were 29,09 and 7,09. Natural sweeteners from trembesi fruit powder has highest carbohydrate content compared to kersen and kawista fruit powder. Natural sweetener from trembesi fruit powder has low glycemic index (29,09) and glycemic load (7,09).

Abstract

Background: Vitamin D deficiency is frequently correlated with elevated malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and decreased superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. Several studies have demonstrated that vitamin D3 can reverse intracellular oxidative stress. However, vitamin D is prone to deterioration and instability. Liprotides contain lipids and proteins that can prevent vitamin D from oxidating. Objective: This study aims to investigate the effects of liprotide-encapsulated vitamin D3 on MDA concentrations and SOD activity in calcium and vitamin D-deficient rat models. Methods: The experimental post-test-only control group study used 24 Wistar rats randomly in 4 groups. Groups K(-), K(+), and P were fed a vitamin D and calcium-depleted AIN-93M diet for 14 days. Standard feed AIN-93M was received by normal groups (KN). Groups K- were deficient rats in vitamin D and calcium without intervention. The groups of  K+ and P were given vitamin D3 (180 IU) which was non-encapsulated and liprotide-encapsulated for 28 days. The SOD activity was quantified with Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) Activity Assay Kit, while MDA levels were determined using Thiobarbituric Acid Reactive Substance (TBARS) method. The statistical analysis used One-way ANOVA test with Least Significant Difference follow-up test. Results: The MDA levels and SOD activity in the K+ and P groups had significant differences (p<0.05) against the control group. Liprotides-encapsulated vitamin D3 significantly reduced MDA levels and enhanced SOD activity compared to non-encapsulated in rats with a deficiency in vitamin D and calcium. Conclusion: Liprotide-encapsulated vitamin D3 has the potential to increase SOD activity and decrease MDA levels.
