Abstract

This coverage review aims to identify the effectiveness of educational interventions and supplementary feeding as preventive measures against stunting among children aged 6 to 59 months in various countries. The methodology applied in this study follows the PRISMA guidelines to ensure a systematic and transparent review process. A comprehensive literature search was conducted through relevant electronic databases, including Google Scholar, PubMed, and ScienceDirect, focusing on articles published between 2020 and 2024. Only studies written in English and examining supplementary feeding practices for children within the specified age range were included. From the total number of articles initially identified, 11 studies met all eligibility criteria and were analyzed in depth. The findings indicate that educational interventions for parents and the provision of diverse supplementary foods such as milk-based products, eggs, lipid-based supplements, and locally sourced nutrient-dense foods play a significant role in improving weight and height outcomes in young children. These foods, which are rich in protein, vitamins, minerals, and other essential micronutrients, contribute substantially to supporting growth and preventing nutritional deficiencies. Furthermore, the results highlight that appropriate feeding practices by caregivers, particularly mothers, are crucial for the successful prevention of stunting. Overall, this review concludes that proper supplementary feeding strategies, combined with strengthened parental education on nutrition, can effectively promote optimal growth and development in children under five. Continuous efforts to improve community awareness, enhance feeding practices, and ensure accessibility of nutritious supplementary foods are essential strategies to reduce stunting prevalence globally

Abstract

Background: Postpartum depression is among the most prevalent mental health conditions during the postpartum period. Postpartum depression is regarded as detrimental to breastfeeding. Depressed mothers may experience a diminished interest and attraction towards their infants. Ultimately, the mother is incapable of adequately caring for her infant, including the inability to breastfeed directly. Objective: Consequently, we performed a literature analysis to rigorously assess the evidence regarding the correlation between postpartum depressive symptoms and breastfeeding habits. Methods: A literature review utilized the PubMed, Scopus, and Science Direct databases, referencing selected publications published between 2019 and 2024. A total of 9,146 articles were obtained from the specified databases and subsequently analyzed using the PRISMA. Results: The review of 22 selected articles revealed a strong correlation between postpartum depression symptoms and decreased breastfeeding success. Depressed mothers tend to have lower breastfeeding initiation rates. In addition, other factors influence breastfeeding success, such as the benefits of breastfeeding, societal and ecological assistance, malnutrition, insomnia, social and demographic characteristics, psychological factors, and patterns of breastfeeding. Conclusion: Postpartum depression symptoms correlate with breastfeeding success. Health practitioners should implement mental health evaluation in breastfeeding programs to identify maternal risk, which can be treated early. This enhances the rates of successful breastfeeding practices and supports the mother's and child's health.

Abstract

Background: Strengthening the quality of midwifery education is crucial to equip future midwives with the competencies required for contemporary practice. Continuity of Care (CoC) learning requires structured learning strategies, appropriate media, and effective evaluation mechanisms based on students’ needs. In this context, mobile applications can support CoC learning through flexible documentation and reporting systems. Objective: This study aimed to identify learning and competency needs for technology-enhanced CoC education among midwifery students. Methods: A convergent mixed-methods design was employed with midwifery students in the Bandung Metropolitan Raya region, West Java, Indonesia, in 2024. Purposive sampling was used to select 310 students for quantitative analysis using STATA 16.0. Qualitative data from online focus group discussions (FGDs) with 34 students were analyzed using NVivo 1.6.1. Results: Quantitative analysis identified learning strategy as the strongest predictor of CoC competency (r = 0.790, p < 0.001). Qualitative findings revealed two main themes: CoC Competencies (with subthemes of CoC Competency Objectives and CoC Core Competencies) and integrated CoC learning components (learning strategy, learning media, and learning evaluation). Conclusion: This study identified four essential components of mobile-based CoC learning, with learning strategies emerging as the strongest predictor of competency. These findings indicate that, although mobile technology enables efficient recording and reporting, it must be integrated with structured learning strategies to effectively strengthen midwifery competencies.

Abstract

Background: Preterm birth, characterized as childbirth prior to 37 weeks of gestation, continues to pose a significant challenge in mother and child health due to the heightened susceptibility of preterm newborns to complications, including respiratory issues, hypothermia, infections, feeding difficulties, and developmental issues. Efficient post-discharge care is crucial to avert difficulties and hospital readmissions; nevertheless, numerous families possess insufficient knowledge and abilities to care for preterm newborns at home. Enhancing the capabilities of healthcare professionals and community health workers is essential to support families and maintain treatment continuity, thereby improving families’ ability to provide appropriate home care for preterm infants and reducing the risk of complications and readmissions. Aims: This study sought to enhance the capabilities of health workers and community health cadres to assist families of preterm children through a Behavior Change Communication (BCC)-oriented mentorship strategy in Bandung Regency, Indonesia. Methods: This community-oriented program employed a participatory capacity-building training methodology, engaging 69 participants, including 23 midwives and 46 community health workers from 23 primary health facilities. The program was delivered over three days, utilizing a blended learning strategy that integrated online lectures, workshops, discussions, simulations, role-playing, and skill-based practice stations. Knowledge enhancement was evaluated by pre-test and post-test assessments. Results: The findings indicated a significant enhancement in participants' understanding. The percentage of cadres with adequate knowledge rose from 58.7% to 91.3%, while among health workers it increased from 65.2% to 91.3%. Knowledge scores enhanced in 89.1% of cadres and 87.0% of health workers. Conclusion: The findings demonstrate that participatory training, which combines clinical care and behavior change communication, effectively enhances the capabilities of health workers and community cadres to support families in the home care of preterm newborns.

Abstract

Optimal breast milk production is crucial for successful breastfeeding. Acupressure has been used as a non-pharmacological intervention to enhance lactation in postpartum mothers. This scoping review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of acupressure alone and in combination with other therapies in improving breast milk production and to identify influencing maternal factors. A scoping review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Eighteen studies were included from ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, and EBSCO using keywords related to acupressure, breast milk production, and postpartum. Three themes were identified: respondent characteristics modulating lactation; impact of acupressure on lactation; and the efficacy of acupressure combined with other therapies. Acupressure improved breast milk production and adequacy in most studies. Maternal characteristics (age, education, parity, and breastfeeding support) influenced lactation outcomes. Reported effects included increased milk volume, earlier lactation onset, and higher prolactin levels. Acupressure was more effective when combined with interventions such as oxytocin massage, back massage, and aromatherapy. Acupressure is a safe and effective method to enhance breast milk production. Its integration into maternal health services and combination with supportive therapies, tailored to maternal characteristics, may improve breastfeeding outcomes. Future RCTs should use standardized volumetric outcomes, longer follow-up, and compare acupressure combinations with pharmacological interventions.
