Abstract

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) shifts the characteristics of municipal waste. This paper aims to provide an overview of trends, impacts, and management during the COVID-19 pandemic globally. The increase in the generation of plastic waste and infectious waste is a new challenge during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was found that the emergence of plastic waste due to the consumption of food delivery becomes an issue in several countries. Despite the increment of plastic waste generation, the mass layoffs contributed to the decrease in the total urban waste generation in general. In addition to plastic waste, a surge of infectious waste from health facilities and household waste originating from residents infected with the SARS-COV-2 virus was observed. This infectious wastewater potentially leads to environmental disturbances to the rivers and oceans. To tackle global environmental concerns, sustainable waste management is required especially in the development of biodegradable personal protective equipment.

Abstract

One of the small islands within the Indonesia-Singapore border is Lengkang Island. Wastewater collection infrastructure services on Lengkang Island need to be assessed to improve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), where access to wastewater services must reach 100%. The purpose of this study is to determine the existing conditions of wastewater management and to plan a centralized wastewater sewerage system on Lengkang Island involving the community. The existing condition shows that all residents channel wastewater into the sea. Only a few houses have toilets, semi-permanent houses on land. Non-permanent houses built on the sea do not have latrines, where stools are dumped directly into the sea. Tripikon-S is one way to overcome the problem of impermanent homes that do not have latrines. Latrine does not provide a solution to the effects of eutropication. Centralized wastewater collection system and wastewater treatment is one way to overcome this. The results of the planning of wastewater collection systems using PVC pipes mentioned the pipe diameter between 32 mm - 60 mm, with a speed of 0.3 m/sec -1.31 m/sec. With this centralized wastewater sewerage system infrastructure, community participation is expected to increase environmentally friendly development.

Abstract

South Jakarta has the highest rainfall concentration and the most flood location in Jakarta. Therefore, an urban drainage system is needed to control surface water so flood can be prevented. This research aims to support the urban drainage system planning by determining rainfall intensity based on three methods, those are Van Breen, Bell Tanimoto, and Hasper der Weduwen. The most suitable method will be selected by comparing the value of rainfall intensity with Talbot, Sherman, and Ishiguro approach. This research reveals that the most suitable method is the Van Breen Method with the Talbot equation. The result of the calculation is rainfall intensity for 2, 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100 years rain return period, with each range 27.2 – 182.8 mm/hour, 36.8-197.6 mm/hour, 43.1-206.3 mm/hour, 51.1-216.6 mm/hour, 57-223.9 mm/hour, and 63-230,8 mm/hour.

Abstract

The building construction project is one of the activities that can pose a safety risk. Work safety risk assessment can be done using the Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) method and looking at the Risk Priority Number (RPN) value. The purpose of this research is to take a case study of the building Office in determining the highest RPN and provide recommendations on its management. This project consists of 13 earthworks, passenger hoist, tower crane, scaffolding jobs, ironworks, formwork work, foundry work, mechanical, electrical plumbing (MEP) work, welding work, and floor wall doing works, and ceramic installation work. The highest RPN from the observations occurred in Iron Fabrication which can cause fingers hit by a bar cutter and bender. In this case, personal protective equipment (PPE) is significant in preventing these impacts from occurring in the project work area.

Abstract

ABR used to treat wastewater with high COD level such as livestock wastewater. ABR treatment consists of compartments which are limited by vertical bulkhead growth with attached bacteria. However, ABR treatment only capable degraded COD level by 50 – 53%. This value did not qualify to be discharged into the environment. Therefore, ABR treatment need further treatment with ozone treatment and aerobic activated sludge. There were two treatments in this study, which are ABR with ozone treatment and aerobic activated sludge (S1) and ABR with aerobic activated sludge (S2). COD degradation with ozone treatment showed low efficiency, 31.1 ± 1.5 % but BOD/COD level increased. Aerobic activated sludge with batch system showed efficiency of COD degradation as 95.3 ± 2.2 % (with ozone treatment) and 78.6 ± 4.5 % without ozone treatment. The final concentration effluent for livestock wastewater was 167.7 ± 62 mg/L. Aerobic activated sludge with continuous system was conducted to test that result and it average efficiency only decreased into 85%. This concentration was qualified to be discharged into environment.

Abstract

One of the types of tofu industries in Indonesia is that the small-scale tofu industry was located in the East Jombor, Ketapang Village, to be precise, on the Blorong River. The Simplified Tofu Industry, with a 1300 kg/day production capacity, produces liquid waste that is disposed of into the Blorong River with a BOD parameter of 2,726 mg/L, COD of 4,972 mg/L, and TSS of 388 mg/L.These values greatly exceed the quality standards based on the Regional Regulation of Central Java Province Number 10 of 2004 concerning Tofu Industry. The entry of these pollutants into the Blorong River, over time, can cause water bodies to become toxic and pollute the Blorong River. Therefore, one of the efforts to protect this river's environmental conditions is to increase the efficiency of the Wastewater treatment plant and substitute the determined fuel through alternative scenarios. In the MBBR scenario, substituting diesel fuel into biomass is a type of biodiesel. Biodiesel has an advantage for the fire tube boiler industry because it can reduce exhaust emissions compared to diesel. Meanwhile, the existing wastewater treatment is substituted for the MBBR unit. The choice of MBBR as a wastewater treatment unit is because it is economical, does not require large land, is simple in development design, and is accessible in operation and maintenance. In the second scenario (SBR), a transition of Diesel fuel to LPG. LPG as a fuel input in the cooking process will result in cleaner emissions, especially on the SO2 parameter, and better because it has a higher heating value than diesel, 47,3 Tj/Gg. Both scenarios are analyzed regarding the magnitude of the impact on the environment using the OpenLCA method. The resulting impact magnitude on the OpenLCA method from each alternative is evaluated to obtain the best scenario. In the Tofu Industry, the best design the resulting impact is smaller than the SBR alternative.

Abstract

Waste management in Boyolali Regency is one of the challenges to achieve the smart city criteria. Garbage in Bolali Regency contains 56.12% plastic composition and 37.13% garden waste. Plastic and garden waste has a calorific value that exceeds 5000 kcal/kg, so it can be used as briquettes. The purpose of this study is to analyze the proper planning and can be carried out in Boyolali Regency by using the carbonization process to produce quality briquettes. The waste processing process consists of the process of sorting plastic waste and garden waste, then counting, then carbonization is carried out, so that briquettes are obtained according to standards. The total waste treated is about 90 ton/day and 45 ton/day, for plastic waste and garden waste respectively. If this process is applied at least, it can reduce as much as 50.77% of waste generation in Boyolali Regency. The total recovery of waste energy from the carbonization facility can reach 5611384.6 MJ/day. The land requirement from the processing process reaches 117 ² with the layouting process having dimensions of 264 m x 65 m.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Education is something that serves as a foundation for humans. As educational activists, we can raise a better generation by conducting teaching activities for the nation's children to hone their academic and non-academic abilities outside formal schools. The large number of students dropping out of school causes non-formal education to have an important role in fostering environmental awareness. This activity aims to foster a sense of concern for environmental knowledge, especially among children in Rawa Simprug IX, South Jakarta, Special Capital Region of (DKI) Jakarta. In addition, it also aims to enhance children's interest in reading from an early age and their understanding of various lessons that have been or have not been obtained in formal schools. This activity was conducted from August 2019 to November 2019. The peak of the event was held on Sunday, November 24, 2019. In this activity, several books could be loaned to children for on-the-spot reading (in the Madani Rubric). The book was carried by a mobile library car from the South Jakarta Administration City Library and Archives Service. There were approximately 30 children of Rawa Simprug IX who took part as the participants in this event. This activity teaches children in the Rawa Simprug IX area who need additional education with the help of HMTL (Himpunan Mahasiswa Teknik Lingkungan) and some lecturers from Pertamina University as the teaching staff. The children were also taught about the environment, particularly reducing plastic waste by using drinking bottles. The achievement of this activity is a recycling product made by the target community themselves.

Abstract

Talang Gulo Final Processing Site, Jami City will make efforts to reduce biodegradable waste consisting of leaf waste. The processing process that can be applied is by converting it into compost with an aerobic process with a windrow system. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the composting system and the results of existing waste processing. This research was conducted by direct observation and secondary data collection from the local management inventory. The composition of biodegradable waste in Jambi City consists of 47.4% food waste and 2.1% garden waste. However, the application of food waste is quite difficult to handle because of its characteristics, therefore garden waste is a priority for reduction by the government. The results of monitoring for one month in a row mean that the waste entering the compost facility is 4086 kg/day. The percentage of waste reduction from composting activities in total can be 0.986% of the total waste generation of Jambi City, or 45.426% of the total waste generation of Jambi City's gardens. The final measurement results of compost have met the quality standard of SNI 19-7030-2004 which has been set by the Indonesian government. The value of water content, pH, C – Organic, N – Total, C/N, P2O3, and K2O Total is 13.64%; 7,12; 4.77%; 0.42%; 11.4% 45.01%; and 0.25%, respectively. It is hoped that even though the achievement of waste reduction from this activity is still low, if it is seen from the opportunities for sustainable management and social support from the community and the government, it will reduce waste generation in Jambi City.
