Abstract

This study is a literature review of peer-based interventions in improving social interaction in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Using a literature review approach, we searched for relevant literature to identify the effect of peer-based interventions in overcoming difficulties in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in their social interactions. The literature search was conducted through credible search engines such as Google Scholar, PubMed, and others. The search includes keywords such as "autism spectrum disorder" "peer mediated intervention" "social skill" "interaction skill" and other variations with a period of 2019-2023. The results of this study indicate that peer-based interventions can improve social engagement in children with ASD. Factors such as similar interests, support and positive feedback from peer coaches, and adult monitoring play a role in the success of the intervention. Although there is variation between studies, these findings provide a strong basis for understanding the important role of interest-based interventions in supporting the development of social interactions in children with ASD. Practical implications include the need for individualized approaches and integration of interest-based interventions into special education programs. This study also identifies knowledge gaps and recommends future research directions to continue to enrich our understanding of effective intervention strategies to improve social interaction skills in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Abstract

Abstract

Motoric impairments are not among the primary challenges faced by children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but many studies have found that various motoric impairments are often encountered in children with ASD. This study focused on identifying the gap in gross motor milestones in children with ASD. The study involved 15 children with ASD, consisting of 14 boys and 1 girl, aged 3-6 years. After conducting a developmental screening using the Denver-II, it was found that the average gap in motor development wasapproximately 1 year and 7 months behind what is expected, with the three motor development tasks most frequently not mastered by children with ASD compared to typically developing children their age being the ability to throw a ball upwards, jump forward, and stand on one foot for a fewseconds.

Abstract

This research aims to explore vocational activities in the form of handicrafts carried out by students with disabilities. Students with disabilities often face various challenges in the educational environment. Therefore, non-academic skills are needed to support their achievements in education. One type of non-academic ability in question is to train the skills possessed by students. This research uses a qualitative method with a case study approach to understand the dynamics involved. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with teachers and students. The results showed that the improvement of motoric and cognitive skills of students with disabilities significantly correlated with the improvement of their academic achievement. In addition, ongoing support from the family and school environment was also found to be an important factor in strengthening these skills. Based onthese findings, the researcher suggests that special education providers are consistent in developing the individual skills of students with disabilities to optimize their academic potential. The findings are expected to provide insights for educators and policy makers in designing more inclusive and effective education strategies for students with special needs. Abstract

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder in childhood, marked by delays in cognition, language, behavior, communication, and social interaction. This study aims to explore how teacher-student interpersonal communication influences the skill development of ASD students. Using a qualitative case study approach, direct observation, and in-depth interviews were conducted with three classroom teachers, the principal, and four ASD students. The findings reveal that teachers' interpersonal communication significantly impacts the social skill development of ASD students. By fostering openness and equality, teachers build trust and emotional bonds, enhance students' social skills, learning focus, and emotional stability, and employ appropriate teaching methods. Teachers integrate positive behaviors through routines like greeting peers or teachers and provide concrete examples and repeated explanations to develop peer relation skills. Empathy from teachers allows adaptive learning tailored to students' needs, using visual aids to aid comprehension. Supportive attitudes and creative teaching methods foster a strong task orientation and academic ability in ASD students. Consistent routines, such as the salim culture, help students understand and follow school rules, promoting positive behavior. Future research should further evaluate the effectiveness of these strategies and programs and explore additional factors influencing ASD students' learning success.
