Abstract

Abstract Mathematical representation is the ability to express ideas or concepts in visual form (diagrams, graphs, pictures, tables). The cognitive style of students is also related to their mathematical representation, because the cognitive structure of students in remembering problems or processing information obtained during learning will vary. This study is a qualitative descriptive study that aims to describe students' mathematical representation abilities in solving mathematical problems of Field Dependent and Field Independent students. The subjects in this study were students of class VIII-A of SMP Negeri 11 Mataram. The results of this study show significant differences related to mathematical representation abilities in solving linear equation problems between students with FD and FI cognitive styles. FD students cannot solve problems if given problems that are different from the examples taught by the teacher and depend on guidance or direction from the teacher. While FI students can solve problems even though they are different from the examples taught by the teacher because they can use their own thinking without being guided by the method taught by the teacher and do not depend on teacher guidance. Then students with FI cognitive styles are more analytical in solving problems than students with FD cognitive styles. The instruments used in this study were GEFT test sheets, mathematical representation test questions, and validated interview guidelines.

Abstract

Fraction sense is a critical aspect of number sense, particularly for prospective mathematics teachers. This study aims to describe students’ fraction sense from two main perspectives: visualization and estimation strategies. The study employed a qualitative descriptive method involving 80 fourth-year mathematics education students. Data were collected through a fraction sense test and semi-structured interviews. The findings indicate that students’ overall fraction sense was moderate, with an average score of 37.2. Students demonstrated higher performance in estimation strategies (68%) compared to visual representation tasks (32%). Many students struggled to interpret visual fraction models, especially when presented in unfamiliar forms such as non-standard diagrams or number lines. The results suggest that students' thinking remains procedural and lacks conceptual flexibility. Therefore, it is recommended that visual representation be more explicitly integrated into teaching practices as a tool to support estimation and foster meaningful fraction sense.

Abstract

Mathematics anxiety is a psychological barrier that can hinder students’ academic achievement, particularly in mathematics learning. This anxiety disrupts concentration, reduces self-confidence, and often leads to low learning outcomes. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) approach in reducing mathematics anxiety among seventh-grade students on the topic of Social Arithmetic. A quasi-experimental method with a pre-intervention and post-intervention control group design was employed. The research subjects consisted of seventh-grade students at SMPN 20 Mataram, selected through purposive random sampling. The instrument used was a modified Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale (MARS) adapted for junior high school context. Data were analyzed using normality and homogeneity tests, independent sample t-test, and N-Gain score calculation. The results indicated that students who received PBL-based instruction experienced a significantly greater reduction in mathematics anxiety than those who received conventional instruction, as shown by the t-test result (p = 0.000 < 0.05). Furthermore, the experimental group achieved an N-Gain score of 0.65, categorized as moderate, suggesting that the PBL approach substantially enhanced the reduction of mathematics anxiety. These findings affirm that PBL not only improves students’ understanding of Social Arithmetic but also has a positive impact on their affective learning domain. The implication of this study emphasizes the importance of transforming mathematics instruction toward more contextual, collaborative, and student-centered approaches to create more comfortable and meaningful learning experiences.

Abstract

The Trapesio and Romberg methods are two classic numerical methods for calculating integrals. The Trapesio method is a numerical integration method that uses an approach based on the area of a trapezoid, but is often less accurate for non-linear functions. In contrast, the Romberg method, which uses Richardson extrapolation, offers higher accuracy even in working on more complex mathematical functions. The purpose of this study is to compare the accuracy and speed of completion in numerical integration on various mathematical functions. The type of research used is pure experimental. Using the Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP) program, both methods are tested for accuracy and speed in solving the given problem. The results show that the Romberg method provides more accurate results than the Trapesium method with an average error of 0.979% in this study, where the result with the lowest error for the Romberg method is in the integral of the polynomial function with an error of 0%. In the case of the Trapesio method, the average error in this study is 9.497%, where the lowest error for the Trapesio method is in the exponential function integral with an error of 0.178%. However, the improvement of accuracy requires a fairly long program completion time on the Romberg method with an average completion time of 4,400 seconds, where the fastest completion time is seconds. Meanwhile, in the Trapezium method, the time required in program execution is very fast with an average of seconds, where the fastest completion time is seconds.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of developing Student Worksheets (LKPD) tailored to the demands of the technological era, as students rarely encounter software-based LKPD that facilitates understanding of the material and is easily portable. Therefore, the researcher developed electronic LKPD based on Liveworksheet with the cooperative model Numbered Head Together (NHT). This development aims to enhance students' mathematical problem-solving abilities in the material of curved surface space. The development model employed by the researcher is the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation), known for its systematic, structured, directed, and planned development process. The study utilized a research instrument in the form of a questionnaire distributed to ninth-grade students in junior high school (SMP). The questionnaire aimed to identify the characteristics of participants and the needs of students regarding the developed LKPD. Based on the analysis of these needs, the researcher successfully developed electronic-based LKPD using the Liveworksheet platform. This LKPD product exhibits advantages in terms of efficiency and effectiveness, incorporating audio-visual elements and student discussions to build understanding and problem-solving skills. It is anticipated that this development will provide an interactive, engaging learning experience and assist students in developing mathematical problem-solving skills.
