Abstract

This research explores the challenges and opportunities for inclusive education for special-needs children in elementary schools in Indonesia. It examines the impact of government policies, the actual conditions in the field, and the availability of supporting facilities and resources. The study utilizes a qualitative method with a case study approach, involving various stakeholders such as special-needs children, teachers, parents, and school principals as informants. Findings indicate that while government policies have improved access to education for special-needs children, there are disparities in implementation and resource allocation among schools. Teachers face obstacles due to a lack of specialized training and high workloads, while limited facilities and stigma also hinder inclusive education. The research emphasizes the need for continuous support, changes in community attitudes, and improvements in teacher training and facilities to ensure effective inclusive education for special-needs children in elementary schools.

Abstract

Assistive technology is present as a potential solution to overcome learning barriers faced by students with visual impairments. This study aims to examine the use of assistive technology in the learning process of students with visual impairments at elementary and secondary school levels. The method used in this study is a literature review. This study uses a content analysis approach from literature and journal articles that contain information about the use of assistive technology in the learning process of students with visual impairments. The literature was identified using keywords, years, and open access articles. The quality of this study adopts three stages, namely currency, conducting, reporting. Data sources for comprehensive research design were taken from articles containing research findings on the use of assistive technology in inclusive learning processes from three main sources, namely Science Direct, Google Scholar and Sage. The results of the study show that assistive technology has an important role in increasing accessibility, participation, and student learning achievement. Some types of assistive technology that are often used include screen reader software, braille displays, and mobility aids. However, there are still several challenges in the use of assistive technology in learning for students with visual impairments such as limited access to technology, lack of teacher understanding in implementing assistive technology in the learning process, and lack of support from the school environment.

Abstract

Children with cerebral palsy (CP) typically exhibit lower fine motor skills compared to their typically developing peers. Various interventions, including constructive LEGO play, have been explored to support fine motor skill development. This study examines the effectiveness of constructive LEGO play in enhancing fine motor skills in children with CP at SDLB Putra Jaya Malang. A Single-Subject Design (SSD) with an A-B-A format was employed. Data were collected through structured observations and assessments of fine motor skills during baseline, intervention, and post-intervention phases. Findings indicate a notable improvement in fine motor skills from the first baseline (A1) to the intervention phase (B), with sustained progress in the second baseline (A2) after the intervention was withdrawn. This suggests that constructive LEGO play positively influences fine motor skill development in children with CP. The study highlights the potential of LEGO-based activities as an engaging and effective tool for improving fine motor coordination in children with CP. The observed progress reinforces the need for structured and repetitive fine motor activities in special education settings. Constructive LEGO play proves to be a beneficial intervention for enhancing fine motor skills in children with CP. Its integration into therapy and special education programs could provide long-term benefits. Further research is recommended to explore its scalability and long-term impact.
