Abstract

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effects of physical fitness level, understanding of the Laws of the Game, and anxiety on the performance of football referees, both individually and simultaneously. This study employed a quantitative approach using an ex post facto design and a correlational method. The participants consisted of 34 active football referees registered with the Bandung City Football Association (Askot PSSI Bandung City), selected through purposive sampling. The research instruments included the Fitness Test for Referees Men, the Laws of the Game Knowledge Test, the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 Revised (CSAI-2R), and the Assessment of the Referee's Performance. Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression. The results indicated that, simultaneously, the three independent variables had a significant effect on referee performance (F = 7.317; Sig. = 0.001), accounting for 42.3% of the variance (R² = 0.423). Partially, physical fitness level (t = -3.955; Sig. = 0.000) and pre match anxiety (t = -3.493; Sig. = 0.002) had significant effects on referee performance, whereas understanding of the Laws of the Game did not have a significant effect (t = -0.869; Sig. = 0.392). These findings indicate that referee performance is influenced by a multidimensional interaction between physical and psychological factors. It can be concluded that referee development programs should be designed holistically by emphasizing improvements in physical fitness, strengthening knowledge of the Laws of the Game through simulation based training, and enhancing anxiety management and mental resilience skills. Abstract

Emotional intelligence (EI) is considered an important psychological factor in sports performance; however, its role may vary depending on sport characteristics and competitive demands. This study aimed to compare emotional intelligence between athletes in a non-contact sport (table tennis) and a contact sport (taekwondo), and to examine the association between emotional intelligence and athletic achievement. A quantitative comparative–correlational design was employed involving 95 athletes (49 table tennis; 46 taekwondo) from West Java, Indonesia. Emotional intelligence was measured using the Trait Meta-Mood Scale (TMMS-24), while athletic achievement was assessed through a structured scoring system based on official competition medals. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent samples t-tests, and correlation analyses. Descriptive results indicated that table tennis athletes had a higher mean EI score (M = 93.53, SD = 10.24) compared to taekwondo athletes (M = 88.73, SD = 15.23). However, the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.076). Correlation analysis revealed a positive but weak association between emotional intelligence and athletic achievement (Pearson r = 0.285; Spearman ρ = 0.199). These findings suggest that emotional intelligence contributes to athletic performance as a supportive factor, but it is not a sole determinant of achievement. Athletic success is influenced by multiple interacting factors, including technical skills, physical condition, training experience, and competitive exposure. Therefore, athlete development programs should integrate psychological training alongside physical and technical preparation in a balanced and sport-specific manner.

Abstract

This Pilot study aimed to examine the relationship between weekly training frequency and executive function among sport science students. A correlational, cross-sectional design was employed involving 50 Sport Science students (32 males, 18 females; age M = 19.56, SD = 0.70 years) who were free of neurological disorders and abstained from caffeine for 12 hours prior to testing. Weekly training frequency was self-reported, while executive function was assessed using the Digit Span Test, Stroop Test, and Trail Making Test (TMT). Because several variables were not normally distributed (Shapiro–Wilk test), Spearman's rho correlation was used as the primary analysis, supplemented with Kruskal–Wallis tests across training-frequency categories and Mann–Whitney U tests for sex comparisons. Weekly training frequency showed a significant, strong positive correlation with Stroop Test scores (rho = 0.529; p 0.001), indicating better inhibitory control among students who trained more frequently. Stroop Test scores were also significantly negatively correlated with TMT completion time (rho = −0.402; p = 0.004), Digit Span scores were significantly negatively correlated with TMT time (rho = −0.290; p = 0.041), and Digit Span scores were significantly positively correlated with Stroop Test scores (rho = 0.315; p = 0.026); in other words, all three executive function measures were significantly intercorrelated. Correlations between training frequency and Digit Span (rho = 0.257; p = 0.072) and TMT (rho = −0.171; p = 0.234) were not statistically significant. Weekly training frequency was selectively associated with inhibitory control, but not consistently with working memory or processing speed/cognitive flexibility, among sport science students. These findings support the hypothesis that the cognitive benefits of physical activity are domain-specific and most consistent for tasks demanding high inhibitory control.
