Abstract

The need for plastic corresponds with the annual rise in population. Meanwhile, plastic waste that is improperly managed can negatively influence the environment. Therefore, a more promising alternative recycling process is needed to convert this waste into oil by cracking, and the process is possibly assisted by adding empty palm oil bunches. This study examines how modifications in the ratio of oil palm empty bunches to Polypropylene (PP) plastic waste influence the percent liquid produced by cracking and the heating value during the process. It is a completely randomized design (CRD) with variations in the ratio of plastic raw materials: oil palm empty fruit bunches 1:0, 1:1, 1:2, and 1:3 at a temperature of 450°C and 40 minutes duration. This resulted in liquid conversion from cracking of 80% at 1:1 of PP: TTKS 1:1. However, the addition of oil palm empty fruit bunches to polypropylene polymers does not affect the increase in the percent conversion outcomes. The results of the heat test analysis show the value of 6.681 MJ/kg and 1.512 MJ/kg. Keywords: Cracking, catalytic cracking, polypropylene plastic, biomass, alternative energy

Abstract

Abstract

Cassava starch has been widely explored as film forming material, however its hydrophilicity restricts its application. Hydrophobic material such as modified starch can be used in the film elaboration to improve its quality. This study aims to examine the effect of modified cassava starch concentration on the physical, barrier, and mechanical properties of edible films. A completely randomized design was used with 5 concentrations of modified starch at 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% and 4 repetitions to obtain a total of 20 experimental combinations. The ANOVA showed that the modified starch concentration affected the compressive strength, thickness, transparency, and solubility of the edible film, but has no effect on its water vapor transmission rate (WVTR). Usage of 20% modified starch gave the product with the best characteristics at 0.22 mm thickness, 89.45 N/m2 strength, 6.484%/mm transparency, 52.19% solubility, and 21.00 g/m2.hour WVTR.

Abstract

Purple yam tuber is known to contain a lot of bioactive components useful for human health. This study was conducted to utilize the tuber in form of purple yam flour for crackers processing and to understand the effect of purple yam flour concentration on the characteristics of crackers.  A completely randomized design was applied using several concentrations of purple yam flour (0, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50%) and 3 replications. The concentration of purple yam flour affects volume expansion, color values (L*, a*, and b*) and anthocyanin content of the crackers, but did not affect its water content and texture. The higher concentration of purple yam flour decreased volume expansion, L*, b*, and overall acceptance of the crackers, but increased the anthocyanin content and a* values.  This research proposes that 30% purple yam flour shall be applied to partly substitute wheat flour in crackers processing.  At this concentration, crackers were accepted by the panelist (like it slightly) and has hardness value 287.2 gF, L* 70.35, a* 11.12, b* 20.18, 2.5% water, and anthocyanin content 179.6 mg cyanidin3-glucoside equivalent/g.
