Abstract

There are chances for small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) to boost local agricultural economies and increase profitability due to the rising demand for value-added dairy products.  This study uses the Hayami approach to evaluate the value distribution along the production chain in order to investigate the economic potential of cream cheese production in Samarinda, Indonesia.  In-depth producer interviews, cost documentation, questionnaires, and production process observations were used to gather primary data.  Identifying the main cost components and evaluating value generation at the processing step were the main objectives of the investigation.  The results show that processing adds a substantial amount to the total product value, with the acquisition of raw materials and packaging being the main sources of expense. Maximizing by-products like whey, implementing cost-effective packaging, and optimizing input sourcing are all ways to boost profitability. According to the report, local cream cheese makers can become more resilient and competitive by focusing on specialized markets, improving branding, and fortifying supply chain integration. These observations serve as the foundation for business plans and regulatory suggestions meant to promote long-term expansion in the artisanal dairy industry.

Abstract

Wood vinegar, scientifically defined as the condensation product of thermal decomposition (pyrolysis) of biomass rich in cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, presents a critical strategic step in efficient biomass waste management in Indonesia. Raw materials like coconut shells and palm oil waste are abundant, making their market potential highly promising. However, Indonesian Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) predominantly produce Grade 3 wood vinegar, which contains high levels of carcinogenic tar, hindering access to premium food-grade and pharmaceutical markets. This review aims to present a comprehensive report on the scientific characteristics and quality classification of wood vinegar, specifically analyzing the mechanism of action, effectiveness, and potential use of Grade 3 as an anti-termite agent (termiticide) and wood preservative, alongside its other advanced applications, such as food preservation, agricultural biopesticide, and latex coagulant. The method employed is a literature review, synthesizing data on chemical composition, purification standards (SNI and BPOM), and experimental findings on its multi-functional properties. The main conclusion is that Grade 3 wood vinegar proves highly effective as a termiticide, providing total wood protection and offering a safe, sustainable alternative to chemical wood preservatives. For food applications, rigorous purification to Grade 1 is essential to replace harmful practices like using formalin or borax. The novelty of this study lies in its integrated analysis of the technical efficacy (Grade 3 in termiticide) and the regulatory/commercial trade-off with food safety requirements (Grade 1), culminating in strategic recommendations for developing downstream purification technology for Indonesian SMEs

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to assess the sensitivity of broiler chicken producers' income to fluctuations in live chicken selling prices and feed costs in Samarinda City. The research was conducted using a simulation approach under several scenarios of price and cost adjustments, ranging from - 20% to + 20% of the base value. The findings show that changes in selling prices had a more linear influence on income, with a 10% increase in live chicken prices increasing revenue by about 13%. Feed expenses, on the other hand, have a more unequal effect on revenue, particularly as costs grow, resulting in significant profit margin reduction. These findings imply that farmers' income is extremely vulnerable to external market dynamics, both in terms of income and production costs. This study validates earlier research findings published in international journals, emphasizing the necessity of risk mitigation methods and cost efficiency as critical variables for the long-term viability of small- and medium-sized poultry farming operations. As a result, governmental measures are required to safeguard farmers from volatility in both input and product prices.

Abstract

Degraded post-mining lands in East Kalimantan suffer from low soil fertility, reduced biodiversity, and limited economic value for local communities. Previous efforts, such as monoculture reforestation or single-sector agriculture, have produced limited ecological recovery and economic resilience. This study aims to develop a community-based sustainable business model and assess the ecological and economic impacts of an integrated cattle–forage–stingless bee system in post-mining regions. A mixed-methods approach combined qualitative techniques (in-depth interviews, focus group discussions) with quantitative analyses (carbon footprint, R/C ratio, B/C ratio) across five regencies, involving five key informants and thirty farmers. The system advances SDGs by increasing income through diversified products (SDGs 1, 2, 8), converting degraded land into carbon sinks (-12.05 tCO₂e/ha/year) (SDGs 13, 15), and supporting biodiversity through pollination (SDG 15). Its cyclical approach, aligned with SDG 12, transforms wastelands into sustainable agricultural landscapes, addressing climate and livelihood challenges. This is the first empirical study to link carbon sequestration and biodiversity gains with economic viability in a three-tier cattle–forage–stingless bee integration for post-mining landscapes.
