Abstract

The 21st century demands individuals to possess adequate scientific literacy to navigate technological advancements and global challenges. Scientific literacy entails understanding scientific concepts and strengthening abilities critical thinking. However, the 2022 PISA results revealed that Indonesian learners’ scientific literacy remains low, with a mean score of 383, below the OECD average. This condition calls for the implementation of effective learning models, among them is Project Based Learning (PjBL). This research seeks to examine the application of PjBL in science learning and how it affects students’ scientific literacy through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR). Fifteen articles obtained from Google Scholar were analyzed using the keywords “Model Project Based Learning” “Literasi Sains” “Siswa Sekolah” and “Pembalajaran IPA” with the selection process following PRISMA guidelines. The analysis shows that PjBL positively influences the improvement of scientific literacy across educational levels. At the elementary level, PjBL helps students grasp scientific concepts through contextual project activities. In lower secondary school, the integration of digital media such as E-LKPD and liveworksheets enhances students’ scientific reasoning. In upper secondary school, the combination of PjBL with STEM approaches and cultural contexts effectively strengthens higher-order thinking skills. Overall, PjBL is proven to be a relevant model for improving students’ scientific literacy by promoting active, collaborative, and project-oriented learning which fosters the growth of 21st-century skills.

Abstract

Science process skills represent fundamental abilities that must be strengthened in 21st-century education, as they support students in developing scientific ways of thinking, solving problems, and constructing conceptual understanding. Data from the 2022 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) show that Indonesian students achieved a science score of 383, a decline from 396 in 2018, which reflects the limited development of essential scientific skills. This study analyzes the role of the Discovery Learning model in enhancing students’ science process skills at elementary, junior high, and senior high school levels in Indonesia. The research employed a Systematic Literature Review method following PRISMA guidelines. An initial search of Google Scholar using the keywords Discovery Learning, Science Process Skills, and Science identified 4,820 articles. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 28 relevant studies published between 2021 and 2025 were analyzed, consisting of 4 elementary, 12 junior high, and 12 senior high school studies. The findings consistently show that Discovery Learning positively influences science process skills through observing, experimenting, and drawing conclusions based on empirical evidence. Across educational levels, this model supports scientific reasoning, critical thinking, and scientific attitudes. This review contributes to science education by synthesizing evidence on the implementation of Discovery Learning across educational levels, providing a structured reference for educators and researchers to strengthen science process skills instruction. In addition, the findings highlight opportunities for future studies to integrate Discovery Learning with digital technologies and interdisciplinary approaches to further enhance students’ scientific competencies

Abstract

Students’ scientific argumentation skills are not yet optimally developed because classroom learning is still dominated by teacher-centered activities. Students tend to memorize material rather than practice constructing evidence-based arguments. Problem Based Learning (PBL) is considered an effective innovative learning approach as it emphasizes active student involvement in solving real-world problems through group discussions, with the teacher acting as a facilitator. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of PBL in enhancing students’ scientific argumentation skills. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) using the PRISMA method was conducted. Articles were searched through Google Scholar using the keywords “Problem Based Learning,” “Scientific Argumentation,” and “Science.” The search yielded 354 articles, which were screened based on publication year (2019–2025), full-text availability, language, and topic relevance. Fifteen articles met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed descriptively. The results indicate that PBL effectively improves students’ scientific argumentation skills at the elementary, junior, and senior high school levels. The quality of argumentation can be further enhanced by using interactive media, such as PowerPoint, virtual simulations, and student worksheets (LKPD), as well as learning approaches like Socio-Scientific Issues and Flipped Classroom.

Abstract

Kemandirian belajar merupakan salah satu keterampilan penting yang diperlukan siswa untuk menghadapi tuntutan pembelajaran abad ke-21. Siswa diharapkan mampu mengatur, mengarahkan, dan mengevaluasi proses belajarnya secara mandiri. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis tingkat kemandirian belajar siswa SMP Negeri 1 Kencong berdasarkan lima aspek, yaitu tanggung jawab, progresif, inisiatif, pengendalian diri, dan kepercayaan diri. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kuantitatif. Data dikumpulkan menggunakan angket skala Likert empat pilihan yang diberikan kepada 36 siswa yang dipilih melalui teknik convenience sampling. Data dianalisis menggunakan teknik persentase untuk menentukan kategori tingkat kemandirian belajar siswa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kemandirian belajar siswa secara keseluruhan berada pada kategori tinggi dengan persentase rata-rata 79,55%. Aspek kepercayaan diri dan pengendalian diri berada pada kategori tinggi, sedangkan aspek inisiatif, progresif, dan tanggung jawab berada pada kategori sedang. Berdasarkan hasil tersebut dapat disimpulkan bahwa siswa telah memiliki kemampuan belajar mandiri yang baik, namun peningkatan masih diperlukan terutama pada aspek inisiatif, progresif, dan tanggung jawab agar kemandirian belajar berkembang secara optimal.

Abstract

Critical thinking disposition is an essential 21st-century competency in science classrooms, as scientific inquiry requires students to analyze evidence, make observations, and draw conclusions. Students’ understanding of scientific concepts may be influenced by their learning styles—visual, auditory, and kinesthetic—which shape how they process and engage with scientific information. This study aimed to describe students’ critical thinking dispositions, analyze differences based on learning styles, and examine the relationship between the two variables. A quantitative approach was employed, using descriptive and correlational research designs. The research subjects consisted of 31 students from grades VII, VIII, and IX at SMPN 1 Arjasa, selected via simple random sampling. Research instruments included questionnaires on critical thinking disposition and learning styles, each comprising 15 Likert-scale items. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and correlational analysis in SPSS version 27. The results show that students’ critical thinking dispositions fall within the high category, and that students demonstrate relatively balanced preferences across visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles. A strong positive relationship was found between learning styles and critical thinking disposition (r = 0.758, p < 0.001). These findings highlight the need for science instruction that incorporates differentiated and multi-modal inquiry approaches to accommodate students’ learning style tendencies and foster the development of critical thinking dispositions.

Abstract

Environmental literacy plays an important role in increasing students' awareness, knowledge, and behavior towards environmental conservation, while also influencing the learning outcomes of Natural Sciences (IPA). This study aims to determine the level of environmental literacy of eighth-grade students at SMPN 2 Cluring, Banyuwangi, based on indicators of ecological knowledge, environmental awareness, cognitive skills, and environmental behavior. This study uses a descriptive method with a quantitative approach. The research sample consisted of 60 eighth-grade students selected through a convenience sampling technique. The research instrument was a Google Form-based digital questionnaire consisting of 20 questions covering four indicators of environmental literacy. The results of data analysis show that students' environmental literacy level is in the good category with an average percentage between 61% and 80%. The environmental awareness indicator reached the highest value of 81% with a very good category, while the cognitive skills indicator had the lowest value of 69% with a good category. These findings indicate that students have a fairly good understanding and sense of concern for the environment. However, improvements in critical thinking skills and cognitive skills are needed through direct experience-based learning so that environmental literacy can develop optimally.

Abstract

Science learning that is oriented towards entrepreneurship has not been able to produce students who have an entrepreneurial attitude. This study aims to identify the effect of local potential-based science learning in Reyog Ponorogo, the Dhadak Merak dance on the entrepreneurial attitude perspective of junior high school students. The research method used is quantitative descriptive with a one-group pretest-posttest design at SMP Negeri 3 Depok Sleman. The sample used was 20 students who were selected using the cluster random sampling technique. Entrepreneurial attitude perspective data collection was carried out using an entrepreneurial attitude questionnaire. Data analysis used paired sample t-test. Based on the results of the study, the paired sample t-test sig (2-tailed) was 0.000, so there are differences in pretest and posttest. It can be concluded that science learning based on local potential in Reyog Ponorogo has an effect on the entrepreneurial perspective of junior high school students.

Abstract

This study aims to develop an interactive electronic module product with a contextual approach and determine the effect of its use on students' learning motivation on conductor and insulator material. This study uses the R&D method with a 4D model. The research instrument is a questionnaire. The product was tested for feasibility, material validity, readability test, and measurement of student's learning motivation. The research subjects were seventh-grade students of MTsN 8 Banyuwangi and 5 validators. Data were analyzed qualitatively. The results of the study are the average product score is 3.9 with very good criteria and the percentage of 98% is very feasible, the validity of the material with a score of 3.8 with very good criteria and the percentage of 95% is very valid, the readability test obtained a score of 3 with very good criteria and percentage of 75% and learning motivation of students obtained a score of 3 and a percentage of 100% with high criteria. It can be concluded that the contextual approach interactive electronic module affects students' learning motivation on conductor and insulator material

Abstract

This study aims to explore preservice science teachers’ conceptual understanding of wave–particle duality and to examine the role of prompt-based learning in supporting conceptual change. A qualitative-dominant mixed-methods design was employed involving 32 preservice science teachers enrolled in a physics education course. Data were collected through pre- and post-instruction open-ended conceptual tasks and written responses to structured prompts during instruction. Quantitative analysis was used to identify trends in conceptual understanding, while qualitative thematic analysis examined the nature and development of participants’ explanations. The results indicate that prior to instruction, most participants demonstrated classical or hybrid reasoning regarding wave–particle duality. After engaging in prompt-based learning, there was a significant increase in quantum-consistent conceptual understanding, accompanied by a shift from ontological to epistemic, model-based reasoning. The findings also reveal that explanation, reflective, and prediction–evaluation prompts played a key role in fostering conceptual coherence and metacognitive awareness, although some hybrid reasoning persisted. These results highlight the potential of prompt-based learning as an effective instructional approach for supporting preservice science teachers’ understanding of abstract quantum concepts.
