Abstract

This cross-sectional study aimed to analyze the association between socioeconomic characteristics, nutritional status, anemia status and health status with the quality of life of tea pickers in Pangalengan, West Java, Indonesia. Subjects were 116 women of childbearing age (15–49) years. Anemia status data (hemoglobin levels) were taken using HemoCue Hb 201+, while nutritional status data were collected through anthropometric measurements (weight and height). Quality of life data was collected using the Short Form-36 (SF-36) questionnaire consisting of the Physical Component Summary (PCS) score and Mental Component Summary (MCS) score. PCS consists of physical function, physical role, pain, and general health dimensions. MCS consists of vitality, social functions, the role of emotions, and mental health. Data were analyzed using a Spearman correlation test, Pearson correlation test, and logistic regression test. The results showed that there was no significant relationship between anemia status and nutritional status with quality of life (p>0.05). However, non-anemic subjects tend to have higher PCS and MCS scores than anemic subjects. There was a positive relationship between Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) with MCS in terms of social function dimensions, and joint pain with MCS in the emotional role dimension (p<0.05). The variables related to the quality of life were the number of family members and expenditures. Subjects with large family size (≥4 people) had a 3.5 times risk for experiencing lower quality of life compared with subjects with smaller family (<4 people) (OR=3.52; 95% CI:1.23–10.05). Subjects with monthly expense of >Rp. 343,646 had lower risk of experiencing low quality of life 59.7% compared to subjects who had household an expense of <Rp. 343,646 (OR=0.403; 95% CI:0.17–0.96).

Abstract

The aim of this study was to analyse the risk factors of hypertension among adult in rural Indonesia. This cross-sectional study included 112 married couples (112 men and 112 women) aged 45-59 years old and was conducted in Cianjur District, West Java, Indonesia. The measurement of body weight and fat composition used Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) monitor (OMRON® Karada Scan Body Composition Monitor HBF-358-BW). Body height was measured by stadiometer, meanwhile waist circumference was measured by measuring tape. Data on the blood pressure measured by an automatic blood pressure monitor (OMRON® Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor Model HEM-7200). All measurement were done twice in repetition. Chi-square was used to analysed the association between variables and logistic regression was used to analyse the risk factors. The prevalence of hypertension was 49.1% (women 54.5%; men 43.7%). Women had a higher proportion of overweight, obesity, abdominal obesity, and hypertension stage 2 than men. BMI (p<0.05), waist circumference (p<0.05), total body fat (p<0.05), and visceral fat (p<0.05) were significantly higher in hypertension subject than not hypertension. Nonetheless, only waist circumference became the risk factor for hypertension (OR=4.005; 95%CI:1.47-10.914 for high risk). There is high prevalence of hypertension among adult in rural area. Adult, particularly women need to pay attention on their body fat to reduce the risk of hypertension.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the yield of torbangun extract, flavonoid content, and antioxidant activity of TE-S and its effect on the activity of SOD enzymes and blood glucose level in hyperglycemic rats as a DM animal model. The water content of simplicia was measured by the gravimetric method. The antioxidant activity of TE-S was determined using the DPPH method, while the total flavonoid was measured using spectrophotometry. The study was a completely randomized design using 25 Sprague Dawley rats. Rats were divided into four groups, namely NG (negative control, hyperglycemic rats), N (normal rats), H-IM (control of metformin drugs 62.5 mg/kg of BW), and H-IT (TE-S 620 mg/kg of BW). The treatment was carried out for 14 days. FBG levels were taken on day 0, 4, 7, 11, and 14, measured using a glucometer, while blood serum SOD levels were measured using ELISA. The study showed the water content of torbangun simplicia was 7.99% and TE-S yield from simplicia was 4.69%. TE-S contains total flavonoids of 3.91% and antioxidant activity (IC50) of 306.28 ppm with a standard of 1 ppm vitamin C. TE-S treatment significantly decreased FBG (p=0.005, α=0.01) and increased SOD levels in hyperglycemic rats. TE-S has the potential to increase blood serum SOD levels by contributing to the availability of antioxidants and decreasing blood glucose levels in hyperglycemic rats.

Abstract

This study aimed to assess SFAs profiles in the maternal and cord blood, and the relationship of both SFAs levels with infant adiposity. As many as 99 mothers with singleton pregnancy and pre-pregnancy BMI .18.5 agreed to join the research and completed the data collection process. Maternal and cord blood erythrocyte SFAs profile was analyzed using Gas Chromatography-Flame Ionized Detector. Infant birth weight was measured at birth, while infant skinfolds were at 5.7 days postpartum. We used Aris et al. (2013) equation to assess the infant fat mass. The average maternal age was 29.62}5.84 years old, while the pre-pregnancy BMI was 22.87}3.90 kg/m2. Infant birth weight was 3168.83}341.64 g, and fat mass was 9.39}3.52 %. Maternal total SFAs and palmitic acid (C16:0) concentration were higher than cord blood, while lignoceric acid (C24:0) was lower (p<0.05). Increased maternal caproic (C6:0), capric (C10:0), and lauric acids (C12:0) were associated with higher infant adiposity (p<0.05). Total SFAs, palmitic (C16:0), stearic (C18:0), and behenic acids (C22:0) in cord blood were negatively associated with infant adiposity (p<0.05). Elevated lauric (C12:0) and myristic (C14:0) acids in cord blood were associated with greater adiposity. In conclusion, we found a different SFAs profile between maternal blood during the third trimester of pregnancy and cord blood. Increased maternal caproic, capric, and lauric acids as well as cord bloodfs lauric and palmitic acids contribute to greater infant adiposity.

Abstract

As a health problem, prevalence of severe underweight in Indonesia is still high. Riskesdas 2008 indicate that prevalence of severe underweight and underweight in Indonesia are 5.5% and 13.0%, respectively. Effort to overcome that problem are still focused on severe underweight children, so need to anticipate of getting worse of underweight ones of being fell into severe underweight. The aim of this research is to make RUF fortified by encapsulated iron and zinc to overcome underweight balita (under five of age children). First step of this research is making flour from rice, soybean, cassava, sweet potato and taro with proceeded by two kinds of treatment, i.e. physic method (using high temperature and pressure) and soaking in solution of Na2HC03 (1.5% and 2.0%). Drum dryer was applied to dry the ingredient (rice, soybean, cassava, sweet potato and taro) and then milled using disc mill. Microencapsulation of iron and zinc was using arabic gum and maltodextrin (80:20 and 70:30) and concentration of iron or zinc each is 5.0% and 7.5%. Then, assays of stability of microencapsulated iron and zinc, and their bioavailability (in vitro and in vivo). Before mixed with minerals, 12 combinations of flour (3 kinds of tuber x 2 cooking time x 2 concentration of Na2C03) are tested by hedonic test to choose the best preferences of that combination of ingredients of porridge. Based on technical, economical, and technological considerations, and acceptability, mixed of rice, soybean, and sweet potato is selected as based ingredients of porridge. There is no color and odor change or even crystalline forming during more than one month of storing of microencapsulated iron and zinc. Bioavailability (in vitro) of Fe is around 15,48% to 17,05% and Zn is around 6.05% to 6,36%.

Abstract

The association of liver and muscle glycogen deposits with serum insulin levels, β-cells pancreas, and fasting blood glucose (FBG) of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced hyperglycemic rats receiving Torbangun leaves extract (TE) investigated. The intervention performed on 25 8-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats divided into four groups. Seven rats separated as a normal group (N), and other rats injected with streptozotocin (STZ). Confirmation of hyperglycemic was characterized by fasting blood glucose >126 mg/dl. Treatment group which is NG (hyperglycemic rats); N (normal rats); H-IM (62.5 mg/kg BW metformin); and H-IT (620 mg/kg BW TE) for 14 days. This study revealed that TE significantly decreased FBG levels, increased insulin production, and the amount of liver glycogen deposits (a=0.01). However, the intervention did not significantly increase the amount of muscle glycogen deposits. TE administration improves β-cells, increases the liver and muscle glycogen deposits. TE was shown to have antihyperglycemic activity by improving the β-cell, increasing blood serum insulin levels, decreasing blood glucose levels, and increasing the liver glycogen deposits.

Abstract

The objectives of the study was to observe relationship between determinant parameters of iodine status and determinant parameter of selenium status among the elementary school children in determining IDD problem. The study was conducted in two villages of coastal area of Pasuruan, East Java Province using 24 samples in endemic area of IDD and 22 samples in non endemic area of IDD. Iodine status was measured based on urinary excretion of iodine (UEI) and thyroid hormones consentration (TSH, FT4, T3) while selenium status masured using selenium content of blood serum. The results of the study show that iodine status as measured by UEI and FT4 of samples living in endemic area (8,3% normal and 95,8% normal respectively) are statistically different from those in non endemic area (100% normal and 95,4% normal respectively) while iodine status as measured by TSH and T3 in endemic area (87,5% normal and 95,8% normal respectively) are not statistically different from those in non endemic area (100% normal and 100% normal respectively). The average selenium content in serum owned by samples in two areas are not statistically different. However if the data was classified based on normality categories, it is shown that samples in endemic area of IDD have lower category in selenium status (79,19%) compared to those in non endemic area of IDD (9,09%). There are significant correlation between T3 and FT4,, T3 and selenium content of serum, and between FT4 and selenium content of serum in non endemic area. The result of regression analyses of joined samples from endemic and non endemic areas showed that selenium content of serum and UEI were closely related to iodine and selenium intake (r=0,402 and r=0,510).Keywords: selenium, iodine status, school children
