Abstract

The goal of this study is to ascertain how the Herringbone technique might be used at SMPN 21 Makassar to enhance students' reading comprehension. Since this study is pre-experimental, it is handled differently. The participants in this study were the eighth-grade students of SMPN 21 Makassar. Using the cluster random sampling approach, a single class—class 8E, which consisted of 27 students—was chosen at random to serve as the study's sample. A written test was administered both before and after therapy as part of the data-gathering procedure. Using IBM SPSS Version 27, the quantitative analysis of the writing test data was conducted to compare the test scores. The paired sample t-test was used to assess the results of the pre-and post-tests. According to the analysis, the average post-test score for the category of "not good" is 58.46, and the average post-test score for the category of "good" is 73.27. According to the study hypothesis, there is a noticeable difference in the reading comprehension of SMPN 21 Makassar students in the 8E class when they apply the Herringbone approach. Thus, it can be said that the 8E grade students at SMPN 21 Makassar benefit from using the Herringbone technique to increase their reading comprehension.

Abstract

This research aims to determine whether cooperative learning (make-a-match type) reduces students' anxiety about speaking English. The research utilized a pre-experimental method with a total sample of 23 students from class X MPLB at SMKN 4 Selayar, employing a cluster random sampling technique. Data collection involved administering a pre-questionnaire, applying the treatment, and then conducting a post-questionnaire. The data analysis results indicate that cooperative learning (make a match type) effectively reduces students’ anxiety in speaking English. This is supported by the t-test value, where Sig. (2-tailed) = 0.00, which is less than the significance level of 0.05. Therefore, H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted. Consequently, it can be concluded that cooperative learning (make-a-match type) alleviates students' anxiety in speaking English. This research contributes to enhancing the English language teaching process by implementing cooperative learning (make-a-match type), aimed at reducing students' speaking anxiety.

Abstract

The research aims to know what the implementation of the genre-based approach in public senior high school 2 Gowa is. The focus of this research is on the teachers' comprehension of the Genre-Based Approach (GBA), their attitudes towards its implementation, and the creation of syllabi and lesson plans. The method used is qualitative research. We conducted the research at public senior high school 2 Gowa. The researcher collected the data through a combination of interviews, observations, and documentation. The researcher employs data analysis techniques that include data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. While teachers understand the application of the genre-based approach, they struggle to implement its steps. Teachers exhibit a positive attitude toward the implementation of GBA. The development of syllabi and lesson plans adheres to the planning and implementation steps, but it does not follow the evaluation and revision step. The teachers in this school encounter challenges stemming from the students' competence and motivation.

Abstract

Meaning, spelling, pronunciation, word classes, and word use are the five main focus areas of this study as it explores how students might use the Duocards application to increase their vocabulary mastery. Fourteen eighth-grade students from SMP Negeri SATAP Sering in Soppeng, South Sulawesi, selected by cluster random sampling, participated in this study using a pre-experimental design. To collect data, vocabulary tests were given as pretests and posttests. SPSS 26 was then used for analysis. The average pretest score increased from 37.71 to 73.78 in the posttest, indicating a considerable improvement in the students’ vocabulary competence, according to the data. Furthermore, the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted because the two-tailed significance value was 0.000, less than 0.005. These findings suggest that the Duocards application has improved the students’ vocabulary mastery.
