Abstract

High dependency on seasonal harvests and limited access to quality food are challenges for the agrarian community in Tanjung Baru Petai Village, Ogan Ilir. This community service program aims to overcome these challenges through shallot cultivation in home yards, focusing on the empowerment of the Women Farmers Group (KWT). The method used is a participatory approach which includes socialization, technical training on shallot cultivation in polybags, the application of simple technology (organic compost), and continuous mentoring. Through the training, the community, especially housewives, gained independent cultivation skills on limited land. The program is expected to result in self-sufficient shallot gardens in residents' yards, improve skills, and strengthen household food security. The sustainability of the program is supported by the formation of home-yard farmer groups and the involvement of the village government for the replication and diversification of horticultural crops.

Abstract

The development of innovative composting systems based on appropriate technology is crucial in addressing the pressing environmental issue of organic waste management in Indonesia. This study aims to develop and test a two chamber composting system with innovative airflow gates to enhance the efficiency of organic waste processing. The system was tested using a completely randomized design with four different treatments: innovative system, standard machine, manual method, and natural method, each with three replications. The results showed that the innovative system with airflow gates achieved the fastest composting time of 20 days, with a stable pH range of 6.9-7 and optimal moisture content of 34-36%. The system also produced compost with high nutrient content, including organic carbon, phosphorus, and potassium. Additionally, the system reduced labor requirements by 93% compared to conventional methods. Soil analysis revealed that the use of compost from the innovative system significantly improved soil quality and reduced chemical fertilizer requirements by 25-50%. These findings demonstrate that the composting system with airflow gates is superior in producing high-quality compost consistently. This system also offers a sustainable solution for organic waste management in Indonesia. This innovation has great potential for widespread adoption as an effective and efficient solution for organic waste management. Further development of this system can make a significant contribution to environmental conservation efforts and agricultural productivity enhancement in Indonesia.

Abstract

Rice is a food crop commodity that serves as the staple food for the Indonesian population. This study examines the adaptation of various rice varieties with the addition of ameliorants on growth and yield in rainfed paddy fields. The research was conducted in Lahat District, Lahat Regency, from January to May 2024, utilizing a split-plot design with 12 treatment combinations, each replicated three times. The main plot treatments consisted of ameliorants, while the subplot treatments involved different rice varieties. The observed parameters included plant height (cm), number of tillers, number of productive tillers, panicle length (cm), flowering age (days after sowing), harvest age (days after sowing), total grains per panicle (grams), percentage of empty grains (%), 1000-grain weight (grams), and productivity (ton/ha). The results indicated that applying ameliorants, such as lime and solid organic fertilizer, yielded the most favorable outcomes for rice plant growth. Tabular analysis revealed that the Situ Bagendit variety exhibited the highest productivity compared to other varieties. Furthermore, the combination of ameliorants, specifically lime and organic fertilizer, along with the Situ Bagendit variety, achieved the highest paddy productivity at 5.13 tons per hectare.

Abstract

The recovery of nutrients from contaminated water and wastewater can effectively mitigate both the nutrient burden on water resources and the associated environmental issues affecting aquatic ecosystems. This approach presents a valuable solution towards achieving environmental and societal sustainability. Consequently, struvite crystallization technology has emerged as a promising method for nutrient recovery, as the resulting precipitate can be recycled as a natural fertilizer. This review aims to elucidate the characteristics of struvite and provide insight into the fundamental process of crystallization. Furthermore, it comprehensively discusses the various variables that influence struvite crystallization, with a special focus on its application in urine-contaminated water using electrochemical methods. The review also highlights the advantageous on environmental and economic aspects. In addition, the limitations of struvite crystallization technology are examined, and future research prospects are explored, particularly in the context of electrochemical techniques which offer innovative solutions for controlled nutrient extraction. Ultimately, this work serves as a foundational resource for the future utilization of struvite crystallization technology in nutrient recovery, in response to the escalating environmental challenges and depletion of natural resources. Keywords: Struvite formation, electrochemical process, magnesium anode, struvite crystallization, natural fertilizer
