Abstract

This study aims to describe the role of YouTube in increasing interest in reading Indonesian literature in Grade VII students of SMP Negeri 17 Palu. The types of research used are qualitative research and descriptive research. The method used in this study is a qualitative method. The data collection techniques used in this study are: 1) Observation, 2) Interview, 3) Documentation. The technical data analysis in this study is data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawn. The results of this study show that YouTube plays a significant role in increasing students' interest in reading literature. Through video shows such as poetry readings, short film adaptations of short stories, and explanations of literary intrinsic elements, students become more enthusiastic, actively discuss, and able to understand the content of literary works more easily. YouTube also helps increase students' intrinsic motivation, foster appreciative attitudes, and encourage them to read literary texts independently. Teachers use YouTube not only as a medium for video playback, but also as a means of reflection, discussion, and understanding strengthening. Supporting factors in the use of YouTube include the availability of internet access, students' enthusiasm for digital media, and the abundance of quality literary content. The obstacles found are network limitations, potential distractions for entertainment content, and limited learning time in the classroom. Overall, this study concludes that YouTube is an effective and relevant learning medium to increase interest in reading Indonesian literature among junior high school students.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a valid, practical, and effective performance assessment instrument to measure fourth-grade students’ reading literacy skills at SDN Petunggu. The study is motivated by students’ low reading literacy and the limitations of conventional assessments that mainly measure surface-level understanding without capturing students’ thinking processes authentically. This research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach by adapting the Borg & Gall model, which was modified into several stages: preliminary study, needs analysis, curriculum analysis, product planning, instrument draft development, expert validation, limited trial, and field trial. The developed instrument includes fable texts, performance tasks, answer sheets, and analytic scoring rubrics designed to assess students’ comprehension of narrative texts. Expert validation results indicated that the instrument was categorized as valid. Field trials involving 18 students showed a balanced score distribution, indicating the instrument’s ability to differentiate students’ literacy levels. The majority of students were categorized as Good and Very Good, with no indication of floor or ceiling effects. These findings demonstrate that the developed performance assessment effectively captures students’ narrative reading comprehension in a more comprehensive and authentic manner. Therefore, the instrument is considered appropriate as an alternative assessment tool aligned with the demands of the Independent Curriculum to improve the quality of reading literacy evaluation in elementary schools.

Abstract

Narrative writing is one of the essential competencies in secondary education because it enables students to organize ideas, construct coherent stories, and communicate experiences effectively. Despite its importance, many Indonesian senior high school students continue to encounter difficulties in generating ideas, organizing narrative structures, selecting appropriate vocabulary, and applying correct language conventions. While previous studies have primarily examined the effectiveness of picture media or poster-assisted instruction through experimental or classroom action research designs, limited attention has been given to describing students' narrative writing performance when environmental health posters are employed as contextual visual prompts. This study aimed to describe the narrative writing ability of Grade X students at SMA Negeri 7 Palu using environmental health posters as visual stimuli. Employing a quantitative descriptive research design, the study involved 21 students who completed an individual narrative writing task based on environmental health posters. Students' compositions were assessed using an analytic rubric consisting of four dimensions: content, text organization, language features, and writing conventions. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including individual scores, percentages, class mean, and mastery attainment based on the school's minimum mastery criterion of 75. The findings revealed that students generally demonstrated good narrative writing ability, achieving a mean score of 76.79. Fifteen students (71.43%) achieved the minimum mastery criterion, whereas six students (28.57%) did not. Writing conventions represented the strongest performance area, while language features remained the weakest aspect. These findings indicate that environmental health posters provide meaningful contextual support for generating narrative ideas; however, additional instructional support is still required to strengthen students' vocabulary use, sentence effectiveness, cohesion, and narrative organization. As this study adopted a descriptive design without pre-test, comparison group, or experimental treatment, the findings should be interpreted as a diagnostic profile of students' writing ability rather than evidence of the instructional effectiveness of poster media.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology has transformed online games into new spaces for social interaction among children, including elementary school students. One of the most popular online games is Free Fire, which provides real-time communication features through voice chat and text chat. Such interactions potentially encourage language use that deviates from norms of politeness. This study aims to describe the forms of linguistic impoliteness and to identify the factors influencing impolite language use among upper-grade students at SDN Kurisa in their engagement with the online game Free Fire. The research employed a qualitative descriptive approach within a pragmatic framework. The data consisted of students' utterances collected through voice chat recordings, screenshots of in-game text chats, classroom and field observations, and semi-structured interviews with students, teachers, and parents. Data analysis was conducted using Culpeper's theory of impoliteness, encompassing strategies such as bald on record impoliteness, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, sarcasm or mock politeness, and withhold politeness. The findings indicate that students frequently produced impolite utterances in the form of insults, profanity, direct commands without mitigation, sarcastic remarks, and the use of harsh slang and gaming jargon. These practices were influenced by internal factors, including limited emotional control and insufficient awareness of politeness norms, as well as external factors such as the competitive nature of the game, peer group influence, and weak social control in digital environments. The study also reveals a tendency for language practices from the gaming context to transfer into everyday school interactions. This research contributes to pragmatic studies on impoliteness in children's digital communication and offers practical implications for teachers and parents in fostering polite language use in the digital era.

Abstract

Higher-level thinking competencies are one of the main competencies in HOTS-oriented learning. However, studies on these competencies in high school students in solving text-based problems are still limited, especially those that relate student achievement to the causative factors. The procedural text was chosen as an assessment context because it demands an understanding of the logical sequence, cause-effect relationship, and correctness of steps, making it relevant to measure students' analytical, evaluative, and reasoning abilities. This study aims to describe these competencies in solving HOTS-based procedural text problems and identify the factors that affect them. The study used a qualitative descriptive approach with 23 subjects from class X B Senior High School. Data was collected through tests, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using Miles and Huberman's interactive models. The instrument is adapted from the Facione framework of interpretation, analysis, inference, and evaluation with the addition of creation indicators as HOTS operational indicators. The results show that student achievement is generally in the good category, with analysis as the most dominant aspect, while interpretation, inference, evaluation, and especially creation still need to be improved. The difference in achievement was influenced by the understanding of text structure, reading literacy, and teacher learning strategies. These findings confirm the need for Indonesian language teachers to consistently integrate HOTS-based activities to develop students' ability to analyze, evaluate, and create, while contributing to the development of HOTS-oriented Indonesian language education.
