Abstract

Math problems require students to think critically in solving a problem. Metacognition leads to the ability to think critically and think at a higher level cognitive process in learning. This study aims to describe the characteristics of metacognition in group discussions on fraction material for grade 5 elementary school students. This type of research uses qualitative descriptive research. The data collection methods used in this research are observation, interview and documentation. The characteristics of students' metacognition can be obtained through observation when students discuss working on problems. Metacognitive activities of 5th grade elementary school students are classified into 3 namely awareness, regulation and evaluation. Students' metacognitive awareness is able to understand the problem and students are able to know what the next thing will be done after understanding the problem. Regulation students are able to choose the strategy that will be used to solve the problem and students are able to apply the chosen strategy to solve the problem. Evaluation students are able to check the answers that are done correctly and are able to ensure that the answers are correct. During group discussions, students are divided into 3 roles, namely students as experts, facilitators and beginners. During group discussion activities to solve problems, not all metacognitive activities appear in each student. Facilitators can influence beginners to be active in the discussion and expert students can help group mates to rethink what they have done before.

Abstract

Geometry and measurement affect our daily lives, both personal and sociocultural. Geometry is one of the contents in numeracy taught at every level of education. This study aimed to determine mathematics teachers' design of numeracy tasks using geometry and measurement content. Ninety-three math problems were collected from mathematics teachers in 31 Padang Pariaman districts, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Teachers were given problem-posing tasks and then asked to design numeracy tasks. To analyze, the tasks were classified as solvable or unsolvable and then further divided into context use level and cognitive process level domains. The numeracy context (personal, sociocultural, and scientific) was also analyzed. The study found that the tasks created had varying levels of context utilization, ranging from zero to second-order context. Most of the activities proposed were at the comprehension level, with just a tiny number designated as thinking functions in terms of cognitive processes. Some teachers' draft numeracy tasks in geometry content are discussed further.

Abstract

Education aims to develop potential and make students more independent. Independent learning (Self-Regulated Learning) in mathematics learning needs to be built according to students' learning styles. Teacher instructions play an important role in triggering students to want to learn without being forced or forced so that students can be comfortable in learning mathematics. Qualitative case study research on the uniqueness of grade 7 male students with an auditory learning style at boarding schools is different from the theory that female students' SRL is better than male students. Of the 8 students with an auditory learning style, 1 student has a different uniqueness. Data collection used MIR (Multi Intelligence Research) documents, SRL inventory, direct observation, and interviews. As a result, teachers give students confidence in taking initiative and maintaining consistent intentions to learn mathematics. Students take advantage of the teacher's trust to learn in their way by discussing and guessing with friends.

Abstract

Mathematics learning for autistic students needs to be done concretely and interestingly. If this is implemented, it is hoped that autistic students will be able to understand and even use mathematics in everyday life. This study aimed to analyze semiotic objects in the bead maze media for learning mathematics for autistic students in elementary schools. The research was conducted in a descriptive qualitative manner. Methods of data collection through observation, documentation, and interviews with elementary school mathematics teachers and assistants for autistic students. Observations were made by observing the bead maze adaptive media. Objects that can be observed are the beads in it, such as different shapes and colors. Interviews were conducted with one third-grade autistic student, an elementary school math teacher, and an assistant teacher. Data obtained from observation, documentation, and interviews were then analyzed using triangulation. The triangulation methodology is carried out by comparing the information obtained from observation, documentation, and interviews. The study results found that six primary semiotic objects, namely language, problem situations, concepts, procedures, properties, and arguments, have been identified based on basic mathematical concepts (numbers, algebra, geometry, measurement) being studied in the third grade. Each semiotic object in bead maze media can potentially increase students' mathematical activities, which are contextual, interesting, and meaningful for autistic students in elementary schools.

Abstract

Numeracy skills are needed in all aspects of life. Numeracy is the ability to apply number concepts and mathematical skills in everyday life as well as being able to use mathematics practically and have an understanding of information that is expressed mathematically. This study uses a qualitative approach with a multi-case study design. Data were collected through observation, interviews and documentation. The data analysis process is done through single case data analysis and cross case data analysis. The location of the study was conducted at three elementary schools in West Lombok regency, namely SDN 3 Kuripan, SDN 2 Jembatan Kembar Timur and SDN 4 Dasan Geres. The findings from the three schools showed that teachers in constructing numeracy-based problems refer to the components of the numeracy AKM but still in the form of simple questions. In pemanfataanya, numeracy-based questions are not done routinely and according to the needs of ANBK only. The lack of workshops and references as well as the distribution of teaching materials on numeracy in schools is a significant obstacle to the use of numeracy-based problems. While the supporting factor in the form of online sites that discuss examples of numeracy problems and the form of contextualization of the problem in the form of personal, socio-cultural and scientific contexts are still minimal.

Abstract

Mathematical literacy has been widely studied by mathematics education experts. Mathematical literacy is an individual’s competence to apply mathematics to solve real-world problems and make appropriate decisions. This study aims to explore the mathematical literacy performance of junior high school students in solving PISA problems. The research method used was qualitative, with eight students as research subjects, each with different levels of mathematical literacy. Data analysis was conducted using the framework proposed by Miles and Huberman, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The research framework was based on the eight levels of PISA mathematical literacy and Polya's problem-solving stages. The study results showed that students' abilities in understanding the problem, devising a plan, carrying out the plan, and looking back differed based on their level of mathematical literacy. Students at levels 1c, 1b, and 1a demostrated  problem-solving abilities limited to basic memory capacity. Students at levels 2, 3, and 4 could only solve problems involving procedural skills. Meanwhile, students at levels 5 and 6 could solve problems with in-depth analytical reasoning and follow-up reflection. These findings have implications for teachers to design context-based learning that supports the development of students' mathematical literacy.
